Dangling: a review of relevant physiology, research, and practice.

Although dangling is a common nursing intervention, little research has been conducted to test its effectiveness or to compare various dangling methods. By contrast, abundant information is available about orthostatic responses. In this article the authors explain the physiologic principles underlying orthostatic responses, focusing on blood volume distribution and the role of the mechanoreceptors, discuss typical and atypical responses to dangling and standing, describe clinical manifestations of orthostatic hypotension and syncope, present research-based practice guidelines, and, provide spe

An illustrative case for addressing infant mental health referrals.

PROBLEM: Despite knowing the importance of the early detection of adverse experiences, mental health disorders beginning or occurring during early childhood can be difficult to recognize. To address this gap, this manuscript describes the care of a parent-child dyad utilizing the nursing process in an illustrative case. METHODS: This illustrative case provides a scenario that includes the early detection of infant mental health (IMH) in primary care with referral to a psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurse (PMHNP) and highlights how integrative care with PMHNP can facilitate the us

A multidisciplinary perspective on advancing genomic nursing in Portugal: roles, barriers and system-level solutions.

The rapid expansion of genomic science has reshaped healthcare delivery, creating new demands for interdisciplinary collaboration and highlighting the need to integrate genomics into nursing practice and education. This qualitative study explored how multidisciplinary genomic specialists, including medical geneticists, genetic counsellors and nurses, conceptualize nurses’ roles in genomic healthcare and the conditions required for effective integration in Portugal. Two online focus groups (n = 10) were conducted and the data were analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis, following Braun and

Training in aspiration abortion care: An observational cohort study of achieving procedural competence.

BACKGROUND: Studies in multiple countries have found that the provision of aspiration abortion care by trained nurses, midwives, and other front-line health care workers is safe and acceptable to women. In the United States, most state abortion laws restrict the provision of abortion to physicians; nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, and physician assistants, can legally perform medication abortion in only twelve states and aspiration abortion in five. Expansion of abortion care by these providers, consistent with their scopes of practice, could help alleviate the increasing difficulty of acc

Shared Decision-Making in Heart Failure.

Background: Pulmonary artery (PA) pressure can be monitored remotely by a microelectromechanical sensor permanently implanted in the PA. This allows fluid overload in heart failure to be managed in a more timely manner. Objective: This study aimed to explore patient and provider perceptions of shared decision-making (SDM) for the cardio-microelectromechanical system PA pressure monitoring device. Methods: A convenience sample of eight patient-provider dyads at an academic cardiology clinic completed the SDM questionnaire in the clinic before the procedure. Results: The majority of providers re

Nurse educators' perspectives of trauma-informed educational practices in undergraduate nursing education: An interpretive descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an essential framework for nursing practice, yet its integration into undergraduate nursing education remains limited. Trauma-informed educational practices extend TIC principles to teaching and learning contexts and have the potential to transform nursing education by addressing student well-being and reducing secondary traumatic stress. However, little is known about how nurse educators understand and implement TIC in undergraduate nursing programs. AIM: This study explored Ontario nurse educators' knowledge about TIC and its potential to transform

Nursing Support for Cancer Symptoms and Caregiver Burden in General Wards: Protocol for a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey in Japan.

BACKGROUND: General ward nurses increasingly care for patients with advanced cancer; however, the implementation of evidence-based nursing support remains unclear. Multicenter palliative care unit (PCU) surveys quantified nursing practices for major cancer-related symptoms and caregiver burden using systematically developed item sets; however, findings from PCU settings may not directly generalize to general wards, given differences in staffing, patient populations, and resources. OBJECTIVES: To describe the frequency of nonpharmacological nursing for five cancer-related symptoms (pain, dyspn

Professional role alignment: Why psychiatry positions require psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners.

The growing demand for mental health services in the United States has intensified pressure to expand the psychiatric workforce, prompting some systems to consider deploying nonpsychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs), such as family, adult-gerontology, and pediatric NPs, to independently staff psychiatry-only practices. This essay argues that such a strategy is unsafe, unethical, and inconsistent with advanced practice nursing standards. Psychiatric-mental health NPs receive specialized training in psychopathology, advanced assessment, psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy that generalist NPs do

Enhanced Outcomes of Training Home Care Nurses to Lead Advance Care Planning for Older Adults.

This study evaluated the impact of Advance Care Planning (ACP) facilitator training on home care nurses' competencies and the effects of an ACP program led by trained nurses on patient-family outcomes. A one-group pretest-posttest design assessed nurses (N = 28) after a 3-day online workshop, while a randomized controlled trial examined patient-family outcomes (N = 39). Nurses showed significant improvements in confidence, and attitudes related to ACP post-training. However, the ACP program did not yield significant patient-family outcome changes. As ACP demand grows, tailored training is esse
