Mania Symptoms' Complex Relations With Psychosocial Dysfunction and Personality Traits: The Role of Positive and Negative Affect.

Mania symptoms are impairing, multidimensional, and complexly related to other mood and psychopathology dimensions. For example, manic activation (e.g., restlessness and flight of ideas) and euphoria (e.g., expansive and grandiose mood) correlate with both dysphoria (e.g., depressed mood and worry) and well-being (e.g., hopefulness and energy). This empirical overlap may distort or obscure mania's observed relations to psychosocial dysfunction and personality traits. Adults (N = 605; M = 46 years old; 57% women), recruited from community mental health centers and by random telephone dialing, c

Do Survivor and Supporter Perceptions of Supporter Helpfulness and Social Reactions Affect Survivor PTSD Symptoms?

Prior studies indicate that sexual assault survivor posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is influenced by the social reactions (e.g., belief and blame) and perceived helpfulness (e.g., empathy, effectiveness) of informal support providers (SPs; i.e., family, friends, and partners). This study examined how SPs' social reactions and perceived helpfulness impacted female sexual assault survivor PTSD among an ethnically diverse sample of 432 pairs of sexual assault survivors and their SPs. Path models were run separately for survivors and SPs. In the survivor model, SP's perceived ineffectiveness

Working hours indirectly affect anxiety symptoms through sleep and stress in dentists, physicians, and psychotherapists.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of working hours on anxiety symptoms in highly educated helping professionals, especially through sleep duration, perceived stress and sleep quality. We analysed the results of 172 helping professionals (dentists, physicians, and psychotherapists, 57 % women, average age 25-63 years) who had participated in a larger study examining the effects of working conditions and constitutional factors on the onset of hand eczema. The participants answered a battery of questionnaires, including Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale

Affective dysregulation and sex differences in somatic symptom disorder: A 6-month longitudinal and mediation analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is characterized by persistent physical symptoms and excessive emotional responses, but the influence of emotional factors such as anger and alexithymia on symptom severity and course remains unclear. This study examined whether baseline levels and six-month changes in emotional factors are associated with somatic symptom severity and course in SSD, considering sex. METHODS: Eighty-three SSD patients and 80 age- and sex-matched healthy controls completed self-report measures of emotional and somatic symptoms at baseline and six-month follow-up. Chang

OBJECTIVE: To identify genetic causes of Shabbir syndrome in two patients of Pakistani origin. METHODS: In the present study, we have investigated a Pakistani family with two affected members segregating Laryngo-onycho-cutaneous (LOC) syndrome. The patients were diagnosed as suspected cases of LOC based on phenotypes including abnormal larynx, nails, and hyperpigmentation in patients' eyes. Genetic investigation was done by performing whole exome sequencing (WES) using DNA of the patients. Sanger sequencing was performed to validate WES findings and segregation analysis in the family. Changes in Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Patients Affected by Covid-19.

INTRODUCTION: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a histological diagnosis characterized by an increase in the number of epithelial and stromal cells in the transitional zone of the prostate gland. The clinical manifestation of BPH is associated with the appearance of so-called lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) which can also be a consequence of other conditions not related to the prostate. Covid-19, also known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was discovered as a disease in late 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted b

Brain mediators of negative affect-induced physical symptom reporting in patients with functional somatic syndromes.

Functional somatic syndromes (FSS) include fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and others. In FSS patients, merely viewing negative affective pictures can elicit increased physical symptoms. Our aim was to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying such negative affect-induced physical symptoms in FSS patients. Thirty patients with fibromyalgia and/or IBS and 30 healthy controls (all women) watched neutral, positive and negative affective picture blocks during functional MRI scanning and rated negative affect and physical symptoms after every block. We compared brain-wide activatio

SMALL BOWEL IS LARGELY AFFECTED IN BEHÇET'S DISEASE: A LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP OF GASTROINTESTINAL SYMPTOMS.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease is a rare immune-mediated disorder that can affect the gastrointestinal tract. The prevalence and extension of small bowel involvement is largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the small bowel lesions diagnosed by double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) and to verify if these findings were associated to the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms and disease activity after long-term follow-up. METHODS: This study included 19 Behçet's disease patients who underwent DBE. After a mean follow-up of 15 years the endoscopic findings were associated to

Symptoms and clinical features in patients affected by endolymphatic sac tumor: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Most ELST data in the literature are case studies or limited to small cohorts (< 16 patients). We evaluated the main clinical signs observed at endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) diagnosis in patients with or without Von Hippel-Lindau disease. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. We included studies with at least 1 patient, of any age, affected by sporadic or VHL-related ELSTs reporting levels of hearing loss and facial nerve function and a comprehensive description of presenting symptoms at ELST diagnosis. We combined data for pr

Allergic sensitisation did not affect bronchial hyper-responsiveness in children without respiratory tract symptoms.

AIM: The potential for immunotherapy to prevent asthma development has become a hot topic. This prompted us to revisit data from an early study that examined allergic sensitisation on bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) in children with and without respiratory symptoms. Unlike previous studies, it used both indirect and direct test methods. METHODS: The study was conducted in Kuopio, Finland, in 1994 and 247 children (55.1% boys) with a mean age 10.5 ± 1.7 years were recruited using a school survey: 165 with lower respiratory symptoms and 82 healthy controls. Each child underwent a 6-min free

How maternal pre- and postnatal symptoms of depression and anxiety affect early mother-infant interaction?

BACKGROUND: Maternal pre- and postnatal psychological distress, such as anxiety and depression, may negatively affect mother-infant interaction quality. However, more information is needed on the role of specific types and timings of pre- and postnatal distress symptoms on mother-infant interaction. Research on the role of maternal anxiety is especially scarce. METHODS: We examined whether maternal pregnancy- related anxiety (gestational weeks 24 and 34), general anxiety or depressive symptoms (gw 14, 24 and 34 and at the infant age of 3 and 6 months) associate with the quality of mother-infa

A Pilot Study of the Effects of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy on Positive Affect and Social Anxiety Symptoms.

Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is efficacious in reducing residual depressive symptoms and preventing future depressive episodes (Kuyken et al., 2016). One potential treatment effect of MBCT may be improvement of positive affect (PA), due to improved awareness of daily positive events (Geschwind et al., 2011). Considering social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by diminished PA (Brown et al., 1998; Kashdan, 2007), we sought to determine whether MBCT would reduce social anxiety symptoms, and whether this reduction would be a

Cognitive mechanisms linking low trait positive affect to depressive symptoms: a prospective diary study.

Low trait positive affect represents an affective vulnerability to depression, but little research has examined mechanisms linking low trait positive affect to depressive symptoms. The current study investigated whether the cognitive strategies of dampening and positive rumination mediated the prospective association between low trait positive affect and depressive symptoms. Participants were 209 undergraduate students who participated in an eight-week online study. Depressive symptoms and trait temperament were assessed at baseline, followed by seven weekly questionnaires which assessed cogni
