The outcome of a preventive dental care programme on the prevalence of localized aggressive periodontitis in Down's syndrome individuals.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease in Down's syndrome (DS) individuals develops earlier and is more rapid and extensive than in age-matched normal individuals. The present study evaluated a group of DS patients, who had been participating in a 10-year preventive dental programme, for the impact of the programme on their periodontal status. METHODS: Thirty DS patients (mean age 23.3 +/- 4 years) were compared with 28 age-matched healthy controls (mean age 22.8 +/- 5 years). The hygiene level, gingival condition and periodontal status (periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment level and radio

A molecular defect in intracellular lipid signaling in human neutrophils in localized aggressive periodontal tissue damage.

Host defense mechanisms are impaired in patients with congenital neutrophil (polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN)) defects. Impaired PMN chemotaxis is observed in localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP), a familial disorder characterized by destruction of the supporting structures of dentition. In the present studies, we sought evidence for molecular events underlying this aberrant human PMN phenotype. To this end, PMN transendothelial migration and superoxide anion generation were assessed with LAP patients and asymptomatic family members, as well as patients with other chronic mucosal inflam

Assessment of Lipid Peroxidation Levels and Total Antioxidant Status in Chronic and Aggressive Periodontitis Patients: An in vivo Study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a common problem affecting a significant population of the world. For the assessment of oxidative stress of an individual, total oxidation status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) are the significant biomarkers. Hence, we planned the present study to assess malondialde-hyde (MDA), TOS, TAOC levels, and oxidative stress index (OSI) in generalized aggressive periodontitis (GP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study included assessment of 40 CP patients, 40 GP patients, and 40 healthy controls. Clinical assessmen

12 years' preservation of maxillary permanent incisors with cervical root fractures adjacent to aggressive periodontitis: Report of a case.

This case report presents long-term results following horizontal root fracture of both maxillary central incisors in a 19-year-old woman with aggressive periodontitis. Due to extensive marginal bone loss and the close proximity of the fracture lines to the bottoms of the periodontal pockets, the prognosis of both teeth was uncertain at the time of the accident. Nevertheless, a conservative treatment strategy consisting of splinting and nonsurgical periodontal therapy was initiated. Follow-up at 12 years after the start of treatment revealed a stable situation from clinical and radiologic persp

Immunoexpression of angiogenesis, nitric oxide synthase, and proliferation markers in gingival samples of patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: In periodontal tissues, angiogenesis seems to be important for the maintenance of healthy tissues and in periodontal diseases. Angiogenesis is regulated through a complex interplay of molecular signals mediated by growth factors involving extracellular matrix remodeling, endothelial cell migration and proliferation, capillary differentiation and anastomosis. However, the influence of angiogenesis in the development, progression, and healing of periodontal lesions is currently under investigation. This immunohistochemical study evaluates the expression of vascular endothelial growth

Locally produced anti-phosphorylcholine and anti-oxidized low-density lipoprotein antibodies in gingival crevicular fluid from aggressive periodontitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Sera from patients with periodontal attachment loss contain higher concentrations of IgG anti-phosphorylcholine (anti-PC) than sera from healthy subjects. Furthermore, a large proportion of plaque bacteria bear PC-containing surface antigens, implicating the oral flora as a source of immunogen for anti-PC. Additionally, anti-PC is cross-reactive with a variety of oral bacterial antigens and human antigens such as oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). We hypothesized that, if the oral flora is a source of PC antigens, then we should be able to detect local anti-PC and anti-oxLDL
