Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on violence exposure and alcohol use among adults who drink alcohol.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated prevalence of alcohol use and violence, including gender-based violence (GBV); however, little is understood about the pandemic's impact on the relationship between the two. Data were collected from January 2021-April 2023 with adults who drink alcohol (N = 565) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Questions assessed prevalence of heavy alcohol use (≥4 drinks on one occasion ≥4 times a month) in the past 3 months and violence/GBV exposure before and during the pandemic. Logistic regression examined associations between violence and alcohol use. Overall, particip

The Combined Impact of Campus and State Alcohol Policies on College Drinking and Harms.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about what policies and practices may prevent alcohol-related harms to others. This study tested whether campus alcohol policies were associated with alcohol use and alcohol-related harms to others among college students and whether these associations differ in states with weak versus strong alcohol policies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a 2021 probability-based survey of U.S. college students. The main predictor was a campus alcohol policy score that combined 33 policies. Alcohol use outcomes included past 30-day volume and binge drinking f

Childhood maltreatment, motives to drink and alcohol-related problems in young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Young adults with a history of child maltreatment (CM) are often vulnerable to alcohol-related problems. Drinking motives have been widely studied to explain alcohol-related problems in young adulthood. OBJECTIVES: The aims of the current study were to examine the link between CM and alcohol-related problems and to test whether CM is indirectly related to alcohol-related problems via different types of drinking motives. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Two hundred eight participants were recruited in a mid-Atlantic urban area (M age = 19.7, 78.4 % female) via advertisements placed throu

Energy drink and alcohol combination leads to kidney and liver alterations in rats.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of the association of energy drink and alcohol in male Wistar rats. Animals were treated by oral gavage with 10 ml/kg distilled water (control); 10 ml/kg energy drink (ED10); 3.2 mg/kg caffeine + 40 mg/kg taurine; 2 g/kg alcohol 20%; 2 g/kg alcohol 20% + ED10; and 2 g/kg alcohol 20% + 3.2 mg/kg caffeine + 40 mg/kg taurine. Behavioral alterations were observed for 6 h after treatment. Animals presented significant differences in the frequency of rearing, ambulation, grooming, wakefulness and tachypnea along time. Caffeine + taurine increa

Attentional bias to alcohol-related stimuli as an indicator of changes in motivation to drink.

Heavy drinkers show an attentional bias toward alcohol-related visual cues. A recent study in our laboratory (Weafer & Fillmore, 2013) showed that alcohol decreases attentional bias among heavy drinkers, suggesting that alcohol satiates motivation to drink in heavy drinkers. Little is known, however, about how this satiety effect might change across the time course of the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) curve. It is possible that attentional bias may return later in the time course if the satiety effect begins to diminish. The current study tested this hypothesis in a group of high-risk bing

The effect of rugby match outcome on spectator aggression and intention to drink alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol, aggression and assault injury are strongly associated with popular sporting events, but mediating factors are not clear. AIMS: To explore aggression, happiness and plans to consume alcohol among spectators before and spectators after sports matches. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys of male rugby football fans at an international stadium generated four groups: a pre-match group of 111 men, and three post-match groups of supporters, 17 whose team had won, 23 whose team had lost and 46 whose team had drawn. Consenting participants were assessed using the assault sub-scale o

A time series analysis of the impact of the alcohol warning label on antenatal drinking.

In a sample of over 12,000 African-American gravidas, we tested the hypothesis that the Federal Beverage Labeling Act of 1988 has decreased antenatal drinking. Results of time series analysis indicated a 7-month lag in the impact of the alcohol warning label. Controlling for population changes, antenatal drinking began to fall as of June 1990. However, this decrease was small in size and did not impact on the heaviest drinkers. Seasonal trends in drinking were also detected, with peaks around the end of the year and the summer.

Alcohol drinking induced in the monkey by tetrahydropapaveroline (THP) infused into the cerebral ventricle.

In the female macaque monkey acclimated to a primate chair, Collison cannulae were stereotaxically implanted bilaterally in the lateral cerebral ventricle. The voluntary self-selection of ethyl alcohol versus water was determined repeatedly during a series of 12-day test sequences in which the concentration of the alcohol solution offered to the primate was increased systematically over 12 successive days from 3% to 30%. Following control preference sequences, the dopamine-dopaldehyde condensation product, tetrahydropapaveroline (THP), was infused daily in each monkey's cerebral ventricle (ICV

[Comparative analysis of the effects of alcoholic drinks of different qualities (author's transl)].

The authors compared the effects of alcoholic drinks rich in fusel oil with the effects of diluted pure alcohol of the same quantity on 19 clinically healthy university students. The investigations utilized EEG and physiopsychic testing methods. The clinical symptoms were observed both under the effect of drinks and in a crapulous state ("hang-over"). It was found that alcoholic drinks rich in fusel oil can produce a more deviating EEG curve, an increased worsening of physiopsychic performance and of clinical and subjective symptoms. The necessity of regular quality control of alcoholic bevera

Oxytocin as a treatment for alcohol use disorder and heavy drinking: A narrative review.

Oxytocin is increasingly being studied for treating symptoms of alcohol use disorders and heavy drinking behavior. The neuropeptide oxytocin facilitates social relationships and modulates the body's stress response by strengthening coping mechanisms and reducing anxiety. Relatedly, oxytocin is also thought to play a role in processes associated with craving and withdrawal from alcohol. This review aims to primarily provide an overview of preclinical and clinical literature on the applications of oxytocin in alcohol use, and additionally discuss a framework for types of trials and the variety o

Alcohol-related liver disease: also a question of what you drink?

Excessive alcohol intake is still among the leading causes of chronic liver diseases. Epidemiological studies suggest that per capita consumption of alcohol from various alcohol beverages e.g., beer, wine, or spirits, differs markedly between different areas of the world. Studies further suggest that different alcoholic beverages may impact the development of alcohol-related liver diseases (ALD) differentially. Specifically, results of several more recent epidemiological studies suggest that consumption of wine and herein especially of red wine may be less harmful in relation to the developmen

Energy Drinks, Alcohol, Sports and Traumatic Brain Injuries among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: The high prevalence of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) among adolescents has brought much focus to this area in recent years. Sports injuries have been identified as a main mechanism. Although energy drinks, including those mixed with alcohol, are often used by young athletes and other adolescents they have not been examined in relation to TBI. OBJECTIVE: We report on the prevalence of adolescent TBI and its associations with energy drinks, alcohol and energy drink mixed in with alcohol consumption. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were derived from the Centre for Addiction

Genetic-epidemiological evidence for the role of acetaldehyde in cancers related to alcohol drinking.

Alcohol drinking increases the risk for a number of cancers. Currently, the highest risk (Group 1) concerns oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colorectum, and female breast, as assessed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Alcohol and other beverage constituents, their metabolic effects, and alcohol-related unhealthy lifestyles have been suggested as etiological factors. The aim of the present survey is to evaluate the carcinogenic role of acetaldehyde in alcohol-related cancers, with special emphasis on the genetic-epidemiological evidence. Acetaldehyde, as …

Why (not) alcohol energy drinks? A qualitative study with Australian university students.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Alcohol energy drinks (AEDs) are a recent entry to the ready-to-drink market, but there is an absence of research into the reasons young people consume these products and their consumption-related experiences. The aim of the current study was to investigate university students' perceptions of, and experiences with, pre-mixed AEDs. DESIGN AND METHODS: Four focus groups with undergraduate university students in a large regional city in New South Wales; with transcripts coded for key themes. RESULTS: Participants reported a number of benefits of AED consumption, many of w
