Drug-induced alopecia is a known clinical entity and mainly seen with anti-mitotic drug therapy. Alopecia during anti-tuberculosis therapy is very uncommon and previously observed with isoniazid, thiacetazone, and ethionamide. Present communication describes an additional case of isoniazid-induced alopecia in a 10-year-old male child, which was reversible after isoniazid withdrawal. Possible mechanisms of drug-induced alopecia are also briefly discussed.

Congenital abnormalities of the hair shaft are conditions in most cases linked to chemical, biochemical, and morphological alterations, genetically determined. These alterations may be associated with a larger array of symptoms, as mentioned above, or may occur isolated. The number of genes involved and their penetration are responsible for the mode of transmission, severity, and phenotypic expression of the disease. Furthermore, in some cases, these abnormalities can be considered true pathognomonic markers of disease. Within this disorder, two groups are classically identified: with increase

The pathobiology of alopecia areata (AA), one of the most frequent autoimmune diseases and a major unsolved clinical problem, has intrigued dermatologists, hair biologists and immunologists for decades. Simultaneously, both affected patients and the physicians who take care of them are increasingly frustrated that there is still no fully satisfactory treatment. Much of this frustration results from the fact that the pathobiology of AA remains unclear, and no single AA pathogenesis concept can claim to be universally accepted. In fact, some investigators still harbour doubts whether this even i…

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of non-scarring hair loss of scalp and/or body. Genetic predisposition, autoimmunity, and environmental factors play a major role in the etiopathogenesis of AA. Patchy AA is the most common form. Atopy and autoimmune thyroiditis are most common associated conditions. Peribulbar and intrabulbar lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate resembling "swarm of bees" is characteristic on histopathology. Treatment is mainly focused to contain the disease activity. Corticosteroids are the preferred treatments in form of topical, intralesional, or systemic therapy. Camou…

Hair loss and alopecia occur frequently in children. The prevalence of the underlying causes and conditions, treatment options and prognosis differ in part significantly from adulthood. This article focuses on frequent forms of acquired alopecia which are not associated with inflammation or scarring of the scalp. Special attention is given to alopecia areata as the most important entity and to trichotillomania as its most difficult differential diagnosis. Significant forms of diffuse hair loss include anagen-dystrophic and telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia and loose anagen hair.

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia is a common cause of progressive permanent apical alopecia. This unique form of alopecia includes entities previously know as "hot comb alopecia," "follicular degeneration syndrome," "pseudopelade" in African Americans and "central elliptical pseudopelade" in Caucasians. The etiology appears to be multifactorial and the condition occurs in all races.

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) was originally described as synonymous with androgenetic alopecia. However, the role of androgens in FPHL has not been proven, and the etiology is not yet defined. Several patterns of hair loss in women have been described, in addition to descriptions of scarring alopecias mimicking FPHL. In this paper, we discuss FPHL as an entity other than androgenetic alopecia and suggest that de-emphasizing the physicians reliance on pattern in the diagnosis of hair loss in women, and instead utilizing other tools including dermoscopy and histopathology, would benefit clini…

The characteristic lesion of alopecia areata is a smooth bald patch on the scalp. When there is no bald surface it is called alopecia areata incognita. To date, all cases of alopecia areata reported as so-called 'incognito' have shown a diffuse involvement of the scalp as in acute telogen effluvium. Recently, we have observed two patients who showed localised hair thinning of the scalp without bald spots. Histopathologically, the lesions were typical of alopecia areata with peribulbar lymphocytic infiltrates. The response to corticosteroid treatment and its clinical course were also compatible…

BACKGROUND: Trichoscopy is widely used in differential diagnosis of non-cicatricial alopecia.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to identify possible characteristic trichoscopy patterns of diseases leading to primary cicatricial alopecia.
METHODS: Trichoscopy was performed in a total of 1,884 consecutive patients presenting with hair loss. In this group, 84 patients were diagnosed with cicatricial alopecia and 1,800 patients with non-cicatricial alopecia. Sixty healthy persons served as healthy controls. Trichoscopy was performed with the use of Fotofinder II videodermoscopy sy…

Psychophysical dermatitis is frequently manifested in patients that suffer from psychiatric illnesses and disorders as well as in patients that suffer from depressive disorders. These diseases occur or worsen after acute stress that may trigger them. Difficulties in expressing feelings or impossibility to verbalise them are connected to somatic diseases. In order to emphasize their importance, we will present a case of a 58 years old woman who has been suffering from alopecia areata that developed after her husband's death. The patient doesn't function well since then - she is socially isolate…

Hair abnormalities observed in epidermolysis bullosa (EB) are of variable severity and include mild hair shaft abnormalities, patchy cicatricial alopecia, cicatricial alopecia with a male pattern distribution, and alopecia universalis. Alopecia is usually secondary to blistering, and scalp areas more exposed to friction, such as the occipital area, are involved more frequently. This article reviews the hair abnormalities reported in the different subtypes of EB.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is a nonscarring hair loss characterized by well-circumscribed patchy areas, most often on the scalp. The inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), has been connected with the development of alopecia areata in vivo; thus, the TNF-alpha inhibitors have been cited as possible treatments for this autoimmune condition.
OBJECTIVE: We report a case of alopecia areata that developed in a 52-year-old woman who was recently started on adalimumab for treatment of her psoriatic arthritis.
RESULTS: We discuss the previously published cases in the literatu…

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of alopecia areata is generally made on clinical examination alone. However, diagnosis may be difficult, particularly in the diffuse forms. Videomicroscopy is a recently developed non-invasive technique that has been little studied in the diagnosis of alopecia. In a preliminary study, we attempted to describe the semiological appearance at videomicroscopy and its diagnostic value for alopecia areata.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients with confirmed diagnosis of alopecia were successively studied by videomicroscopy: alopecia areata (18 cases), androgenogenetic alopecia…

Alopecia areata is a non scarring inflammatory hair disease, frequently recurrent. It commonly presents as round patches of hair loss which can be the first manifestation of a more severe alopecia: totalis or universalis. A CD4 lymphocytic infiltrate surrounds the hair follicle and is presumed to play a role in the hair fall. There are many treatments available which may help stimulate regrowth. The efficacy, risks, and benefits of each treatment have to be considered when choosing a treatment plan.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known in women as female pattern hair loss, is caused by androgens in genetically susceptible women and men. The thinning begins between ages 12 and 40 years, the inheritance pattern is polygenic, and the incidence is the same as in men. In susceptible hair follicles, dihydrotestosterone binds to the androgen receptor, and the hormone-receptor complex activates the genes responsible for the gradual transformation of large terminal follicles to miniaturized follicles. Both young women and young men with AGA have higher levels of 5alpha reductase and androgen re…
