Working memory and executive functions in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is usually considered to produce a profound impairment of long-term episodic memory, while at the same time sparing working memory. However, this neuropsychological dissociation has rarely been examined in detail. While a few studies have assessed some components of working memory in TGA, the results that have been obtained are far from conclusive. To clarify this issue, we carried out a comprehensive investigation of working memory in 10 patients during a TGA attack. In the first study, we report the results from three patients examined with a battery of neurops

Transient global amnesia, migraine, thalamic infarct, dihydroergotamine, and sumatriptan.

This case report describes an episode of transient global amnesia that occurred during a migraine attack, which had been treated with vasoconstrictors. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a small lesion with an ischemic appearance in the right thalamus.

Transient global amnesia after cerebral angiography. A case report.

We report on a case of transient global amnesia after cerebral angiography in which a nonionic contrast medium was used. The complication observed showed no evidence of any definite cause.

[Transient global amnesia. Case-control study of 24 cases].

Transient global amnesia (AGT) is a well-defined syndrome of unknown aetiology. It is generally believed to be of vascular origin. Other theories suggest epilepsy or migraine as the cause. We studied the clinical features and associated risk factors in 24 patients with AGT, comparing them with two control groups with 24 people in each group, paired for age and sex. The first control group contained healthy individuals (CN) and the second patients with transient ischaemic attacks (AIT). Of the patients with AGT, 70% were women and 30% men. Their average age was 60 (range 14-76). The attacks wer

Transient global amnesia and cerebral infarct: a case report.

Transient global amnesia refers to a sudden and isolated dysfunction of memory for recent events, lasting a few hours. The pathogenesis of this neurological disorder is still uncertain. The most accepted hypotheses concern ischaemic, epileptic and migraine causes. We now report a case of transient global amnesia associated with computed tomography evidence for a hypodense area in the left thalamus 10 days after the transient memory dysfunctions.

Thalamic ischemia in transient global amnesia: a SPECT study.

We performed 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT in a patient during transient global amnesia and twice thereafter. SPECT during the attack showed a significant diminution of regional blood flow in the left thalamus and a less marked diminution in the right thalamus. Quantitative evaluation of global 99mTc-HMPAO uptake indicated a diffuse depression of cerebral blood flow. At follow-up to 40 days after the attack, global uptake and thalamic flow indices normalized, but there was a persistent reduction of left frontal flow values.

Transient global amnesia and falcotentorial meningioma--a case report.

A 59-year-old woman suffered from a single episode of transient global amnesia (TGA). A computerized tomographic scan and angiographic examinations revealed a falcotentorial meningioma, supplied by the posterior cerebral arteries. We suggest that TGA can be attributed to the vascular insufficiency in this case.

Transient global amnesia after mild head injury in childhood.

In seven entirely healthy children in the age group of 6.5 to 14.5 years, mild head injury produced transient global amnesia (TGA) of median duration of 4.5 hours. None of the patients had convincing signs of brain concussion or clinical focal symptomatology. In four cases CT examination of the brain showed normal findings. Four children had a transient abnormal EEG (intermittent delta rhythms, slowed background activity inconstant local finding (of slow waves). During the period monitored (2-34 months) there was no recurrent attack and the children have had no difficulties. Pathologically, th

Left thalamic hypertensive haemorrhage presenting as transient global amnesia.

A case is described which presented as transient global amnesia (TGA) due to a critically placed intracerebral hypertensive haematoma in the left thalamic region, with epileptic discharges arising from the same area. It is proposed that intracerebral haematomas may occasionally present as a clinically well-defined neurological syndrome. The deficit in such cases is probably not due to the underlying direct tissue damage but secondary to indirect pressure or ischaemic insults.

A Case of Transient Global Amnesia Triggered by Sexual Intercourse.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is described as a sudden onset of anterograde and retrograde amnesia. In this case report, we present a case of a 52-year-old man who came to our hospital experiencing sudden-onset confusion and memory loss an hour after engaging in sexual activity with his wife. Before this, the patient had no previous medical history. Four hours following the event, a non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan was performed and showed no signs of any intracranial pathology. In addition, T1-weighted and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed 13 hours followin

An Atypical Case of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy and Transient Global Amnesia.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) may clinically mimic an acute coronary syndrome and is most often associated with an acute stressor. In this case report, we describe an atypical case of TTC triggered by multiple subacute stressors rather than 1 acute stressor. We also report TTC and transient global amnesia occurring concurrently. This case highlights that TTC can present without a typical stressor and should nonetheless by considered in the appropriate clinical context. Concomitant presentation with transient global amnesia is uncommon, but may result from the 2 conditions potentially sharing

Interaction between the heart and the brain in transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: To analyse whether patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) have concomitant cardiac injury by assessing clinical symptoms, as well as blood and cardiologic test results. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we analysed 202 consecutive patients presenting with isolated TGA and treated at our institution between March 2010 and December 2018. We examined the incidence of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTNI) level elevation, electrocardiogram (ECG) findings, and data on clinical management. RESULTS: Among the TGA patients, 17 (8.4%) exhibited elevated lev

Implicit Learning in Transient Global Amnesia and the Role of Stress.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a disorder with reversible anterograde disturbance of explicit memory, frequently preceded by an emotionally or physically stressful event. By using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following an episode of TGA, small hippocampal lesions have been observed. Hence it has been postulated that the disorder is caused by the stress-related transient inhibition of memory formation in the hippocampus. In experimental studies, stress has been shown to affect both explicit and implicit learning-the latter defined as learning and memory processes that lack conscious awar

No signs of intracranial arterial vasoconstriction in transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The current theories to explain the pathophysiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) involve epilepsy, migraine, and hippocampal ischemia which might be determined by venous congestion or arterial vasoconstriction triggered by Valsalva-associated maneuvers in susceptible individuals. METHODS: Seventy-five TGA patients [mean age 60.3 ± 8.0 years, 44 (59%) females] and 75 age- and gender-matched controls were enrolled into a case-control study and underwent extracranial and transcranial arterial echo-color Doppler sonography. RESULTS: Intracranial arterial obstructions

[A study of right-left shunt in transient global amnesia].

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a disorder of unknown aetiology. In recent studies, TGA was associated with a right to left shunt (RLS). We studied the presence of the RLS in patients with TGA and we compared this series with patients who had suffered a transient ischaemic attack (TIA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 66 consecutive TGA patients. In these patients a transcranial Doppler was performed to determine the presence of a RLS. We collected data on the TGA episode, vascular risk factors, migraine history, recurrence of TGA and neuroimaging in patients with and withou
