Amphetamine abuse and transsexualism.

The serendipitous findings of an unusual case of self-labeled transsexualism and amphetamine abuse are presented. The patient, a white male, reported transsexual episodes only after intravenous injection of metamphetamines. At all other times, he considered himself masculine and never entertained cross-gender fantasies or wishes for sex reassignment surgery. Hypotheses are raised which suggest a possible neurochemical explanation for this man's transsexual episodes.

Drug abuse by alcoholics and problem drinkers: a literature review and evaluation.

The estimate of drug abuse by alcoholics and problem drinkers in the literature varies from a low of 1% to a high of 90%. These studies, coupled with data from the National Drug/Alcohol Collaborative Project (NDACP), led us to estimate the figure to lie somewhere between 60 and 80%, being somewhat higher for individuals under 40 than over 40. Some explanations for the increased occurrence of this form of multiple substance abuse are provided. Problems associated with investigating this phenomenon are discussed and illustrated. Physiological and medical complications associated with drug and al

Not all non-drinkers with HIV are equal: demographic and clinical comparisons among current non-drinkers with and without a history of prior alcohol use disorders.

Studies of persons living with HIV (PLWH) have compared current non-drinkers to at-risk drinkers without differentiating whether current non-drinkers had a prior alcohol use disorder (AUD). The purpose of this study was to compare current non-drinkers with and without a prior AUD on demographic and clinical characteristics to understand the impact of combining them. We included data from six sites across the US from 1/2013 to 3/2015. Patients completed tablet-based clinical assessments at routine clinic appointments using the most recent assessment. Current non-drinkers were identified by AUDI

Detecting DSM-5 Opioid and Methamphetamine Use Disorders With the UNCOPE Screen.

BACKGROUND: The most recent wave of the opioid epidemic has contributed to record number of drug overdoses. Most fatal outcomes are associated with opioids and methamphetamine; two substances that tend to be used at high rates among criminal justice populations. Despite the steady rise in the number of overdoses in local detention centers, many correctional facilities do not conduct routine screens for opioid and methamphetamine use disorders. This study examines the utility of the UNCOPE, a 6-item brief screen, to detect probable Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, fifth e

Exploring weight control as motivation for illicit stimulant use.

OBJECTIVE: Research has highlighted a growing trend among young, adult women to initiate drug use for weight loss. With known suppressive effects on appetite, illicit stimulants (i.e., cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy) may be particularly attractive to college women, who are at elevated risk for increased body dissatisfaction and experimenting with extreme weight loss techniques. The current study examines the association between risk factors and symptomatology of eating disorders and illicit stimulant use (ISU). METHODS: A preliminary study was conducted on a nonclinical sa

Methamphetamine and Cannabis: A Tale of Two Drugs and their Effects on HIV, Brain, and Behavior.

HIV infection and drug use intersect epidemiologically, and their combination can result in complex effects on brain and behavior. The extent to which drugs affect the health of persons with HIV (PWH) depends on many factors including drug characteristics, use patterns, stage of HIV disease and its treatment, comorbid factors, and age. To consider the range of drug effects, we have selected two that are in common use by PWH: methamphetamine and cannabis. We compare the effects of methamphetamine with those of cannabis, to illustrate how substances may potentiate, worsen, or even buffer the eff

Fenetylline: therapeutic use, misuse and/or abuse.

Fenetylline (CAPTAGON) is included in a list of compounds to be considered by a World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee in April 1985 for possible international scheduling under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, 1971. For over 23 years, this central stimulant has been used therapeutically in hyperkinetic children and other indications in place of amphetamines and other central stimulants with higher risk levels. In good correspondence with recent animal data fenetylline also shows significant qualitative and quantitative differences compared to amphetamine in man. It has few

Fusobacterium nucleatum enhances amphetamine-induced behavioral responses through a butyrate-driven epigenetic mechanism.

Amphetamines are psychostimulants that are commonly used to treat neuropsychiatric disorders and are prone to misuse. The pathogenesis of amphetamine use disorder (AUD) is associated with dysbiosis (an imbalance in the body's microbiome) and bacterially produced short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are implicated in the gut-brain axis. Amphetamine exposure in both rats and humans increases the amount of intestinal Fusobacterium nucleatum, which releases SFCAs. Here, we found that colonization of gnotobiotic Drosophila melanogaster with F. nucleatum or supplementing the flies' diet with the S

Treatment of toxicity from amphetamines, related derivatives, and analogues: a systematic clinical review.

BACKGROUND: Overdose of amphetamine, related derivatives, and analogues (ARDA) continues to be a serious worldwide health problem. Patients frequently present to the hospital and require treatment for agitation, psychosis, and hyperadrenegic symptoms leading to pathologic sequelae and mortality. OBJECTIVE: To review the pharmacologic treatment of agitation, psychosis, and the hyperadrenergic state resulting from ARDA toxicity. METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to September 2014. Articles on pharmacologic treatment of ARDA-induced agitation, psy

[Risk factors of schizophrenia development in patients with amphetamines dependence and psychosis (amphetamine-induced psychosis and schizophrenia), and without psychosis].

AIM: Amphetamine and its derivates can induce, usually after many intoxications, schizophrenia-like psychosis. These disorders appeared only in part patients with amphetamine dependence. Aim of the study was to establish prevalence of selective risk factors of schizophrenia development in amphetamine users: 1) with amphetamine-induced schizophrenia-like psychosis, 2) with schizophrenia, and 2) without psychotic symptoms. MATERIAL: In the study 3 groups of subjects were included: 30 amphetamine users with amphetamine induced schizophrenia-like psychosis, 30 amphetamine users with schizophrenia

Causes and manners of death among users of heroin, methadone, amphetamine, and cannabis in relation to postmortem chemical tests for illegal drugs.

A 12-year medicolegal investigation of deceased illegal drug users (ILDU) in Stockholm, Sweden, classified on the basis of postmortem chemical tests, showed noticeable variations in causes and manners of death as well as in the distribution of suicide methods. This study offers objective information about connection between the postmortem findings of illegal drugs and the causes and manners of death of their users. However, further studies, comparing prevalence of drug use in general population and at the postmortem tests, are needed for more detailed elucidation of this connection.

Publicly-Funded Treatment Outcomes and Their Correlates Among Clients Who Engage in Opioid-Methamphetamine Co-Use, Other Types of Polydrug Use, or Single Drug Use.

Background: Community samples of persons entering SUD treatment suggest that polydrug use is the norm; however, patterns of polydrug use vary by individual. Objectives: With increasing rates of opioid-methamphetamine co-use in the U.S., examination of correlates and outcomes for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment for this type of polydrug use, comparing to other types of polydrug use and single drug use, are needed. Secondary data from 2481 adults (ages 18+) in a multi-year evaluation of publicly-funded SUD treatment was analyzed. Results: The study's findings show that individuals who co-

Types of polydrug use among Spanish adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the types of polydrug use among Spanish adolescents. METHOD: 1501 high school students (50.6% female) aged 12 to 17years old (mean age=14.03, SD=1.28), from public schools in the city of Girona (Catalonia, Spain), completed the survey. RESULTS: In the previous six months 20.9% of the Spanish adolescents used alcohol, 18.8% tobacco, 10.5% cannabis and 0.7% cocaine. Specifically, 28.6% of the sample (n=429; 29% males and 28.2% females) used at least one drug and 13.9% reported polydrug use (n=208; 12.6% males and 15.1% females). Indicators of use of methamphetamine and other substances among men who have sex with men, San Francisco, 2003-2006.

BACKGROUND: Substance use has been associated with high-risk sexual behavior among men who have sex with men (MSM) both in the U.S. and around the world. Recent efforts by local organizations in San Francisco have specifically targeted methamphetamine use in this population. METHODS: We tracked methamphetamine and other substance use among men who have sex with men (MSM) in San Francisco from 2003 to 2006 using an indicator available in community outreach surveys of a prevention education program targeting MSM (n=4602). RESULTS: Overall, use of diverse substances tended to decrease from 2003

Partial effects of the AMPAkine CX717 in a strain specific battery of tests for manic-like behavior in black Swiss mice.

BACKGROUND: AMPA receptors are highly expressed throughout the central nervous system and are suggested to be involved in mood regulation. Studies found changes in glutamate, its metabolites and receptors in patients with bipolar disorder (BPD) or major depression (MD) and in animal models of stress. Additional data suggest that the glutamatergic system and AMPA receptors specifically, have an important role in modulating the therapeutic effects of mood stabilizers. Further research on the role of AMPA receptors in mood regulation can be done using AMPAkines, positive modulators of AMPA recept
