The Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC) is a government-funded multidisciplinary academic institution dedicated to research, development and technology in many areas of knowledge. Biomedical projects and publications comprise about 40% of the total at IVIC. In this article, we present an overview of some selected research and development projects conducted at IVIC which we believe contain new and important aspects related to malaria, ancylostomiasis, dengue fever, leishmaniasis and tuberculosis. Other projects considered of interest in the general area of tropical medici…

The authors described the clonorchiasis focus in the Vietnam province at the seaside delta of the Red River where the aforementioned invasion was accompanied with multiple invasions with intestinal nematodes. Clonorchiasis infestation rate was 28.4% ascaridiasis, 50.5%, trichocephaliasis, 21.3% ancylostomiasis, 7.0%. Clonorchiasis invasion was the result of consumed uncooked carp fish in the salad. It was revealed that the fish was reared in the ponds near the settlements and was fed untreated human and animal feces. The meal was more common among the male persons in the presence of the alcoho…

The pharmacist Theodoro Peckolt was one of the most important figures in the history of the chemistry of natural Brazilian products. Like other nineteenth-century pharmacists in Brazil, he developed formulations and sold them at his pharmacy in Rio de Janeiro, and these enjoyed great prestige in the eyes both of the public and the medical community. The article discusses the relation between the illness originally called "opilação" (ancylostomiasis, or hookworm) and nineteenth-century treatment. It focuses especially on Peckolt Pharmacy's "Doliarina and iron powder," a formulation extracted fr…

Among refugees, asylum seekers, or people coming from tropical regions, eosinophilia (>0.5 G/L) is often a sign of parasitic infection, even in the absence of symptoms. The most frequently encountered are helminthiasis such as strongyloidiasis, ancylostomiasis, and schistosomiasis. Management should ideally include screening by three repeated stool analysis and serology. However, collection and storage of stool samples is often difficult in collective accommodation centers. A pragmatic and simplified approach is therefore preferable. Antiparasitic treatment, whether specific or empiric, resolv…

Human helminthic infestations are extraordinarily common in tropical regions and represent a significant burden for those countries and their populations. The risk of intestinal helminthoses is further increased by poverty. Particularly in children helminthoses lead to malnutrition (ascariasis etc) or iron and protein deficiency (ancylostomiasis). Tropical helminthoses like schistosomiasis and filariasis can cause severe organ damage, starvation, and early death. In contrast, returning travellers very rarely acquire tropical helminthoses, if they follow simple hygienic rules. Furthermore, the …

In two villages of north Ethiopia (Gorgora and Zerema) helminthologic stool analyses were performed and compared with seroimmunologic examinations. Regional difference could be obtained. The infection rate of males was slightly higher than that of females (except Schistosomiasis in Gorgora). Ascaridiasis, Ancylostomiasis and Trichuriasis are probably life-long accompanying parasitoses--they were slightly more frequent in higher than in lower age in Zerema--in contrast to Schistosomiasis which was slightly more frequent in younger people (differences not significant, likely due to the small num…

CONCLUSIONS: The results emphasize the need to consider zoonotic ancylostomiasis while developing strategies to control hookworm infections.

Hookworm infections as well as other intestinal nematodiases are endemic in China. In this case, a 70-year-old male showed symptoms of chest … as markedly ameliorated after eliminating the parasites. The results mentioned above suggested that ancylostomiasis was the leading causes of anemia in this patient, and the etiology of anemia in uremic patients should be systematically considered. Especially when anemia could not be cured by regular treatments, rare diseases should be investigated.

Four hundred and fifty subjects were included in a study of the prevalence of soil-transmitted nematodes in Ujung Pandang, South-Sulawesi, I … orm infections, respectively. Mebendazole appeared to be equally effective against necatoriasis and ancylostomiasis. The drug was well tolerated and almost no side effects were observed. Single dose mebendazole treatment appears to be relatively inexpensive, convenient, and effective in mass treatment for the control of intestinal nematode infections, especially …

It was found that the ovicidal rates in human ascariasis, trichuriasis and ancylostomiasis were 98.8%, 100% and 100%, respectively on the second day following the initiation of treatment. The results showed that the worm-repelling and ovicidal effect of the combined chemotherapy was more evident.

The dog hookworm Ancylostoma caninum (Nematoda, Ancylostomatidae) is a blood-feeding intestinal parasitic nematode and can cause ancylostomiasis in humans. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of this anthropozoonotic hookworm was sequenced through Illumina deep sequencing technology. The whole genome was 13,721 bp in length and encoded 36 genes including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and 2 ribosomal RNAs. Phylogeny revealed that A. caninum grouped with species from Ancylostomatinae and separated from species of Bunostominae in the family Ancylostomatidae. Amongst the …

Ancylostoma-secreted protein 1 (ASP-1) is the major protein secreted by infective hookworm larvae (Ancylostoma caninum). The Escherichia coli-expressed recombinant protein was evaluated as a vaccine antigen in a mouse model of ancylostomiasis. A. caninum larvae migrate through mouse lungs, with maximal migration occurring 48-54 h after oral infection. Quantitative larval recovery from the lungs at this time was used as an end point for vaccine evaluation. All mice developed antibodies to recombinant ASP-1 (rASP-1) after immunization and boosting with the alum-precipitated protein. The immunize…

F. hepatica infections (0.01%) were found in Sobtas, and an 8% H. heterophyes infection rate was found in Mataryia.
