Ketamine/Xylazine Anesthesia-Related Corneal Lesions in Rats With Surgically Implanted Venous Catheters Utilized in Nonclinical Intravenous Studies.

Nonclinical rodent studies with repeat slow intravenous dosing, such as safety assessments of anticancer therapeutics, often require the use of animals with surgically implanted catheters. Catheterization is a relatively short surgical procedure but requires use of anesthesia. Ketamine/xylazine injectable anesthesia is typically used because it has advantages over inhalation anesthesia including ease of administration, safety and predictability of effects, and relatively low cost. However, ketamine/xylazine anesthesia in rodents can also be associated with the development of undesirable cornea

Incidence of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction Following Inhalational vs Total Intravenous General Anesthesia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) has been increasingly recognized as a contributor to postoperative complications. A consensus-working group recommended that POCD should be distinguished between delayed cognitive recovery, ie, evaluations up to 30 days postoperative, and neurocognitive disorder, ie, assessments performed between 30 days and 12 months after surgery. Additionally, the choice of the anesthetic, either inhalational or total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and its effect on the incidence of POCD, has become a focus of research. Our primary objective was to search the litera

Study on prevention of hypercapnia by nasal high flow in patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography during intravenous anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: For relatively invasive upper gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, such as an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and also lower gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, intravenous anesthesia is routinely used to reduce patient anxiety. However, with the use of intravenous anesthesia, even at mild to moderate depth of anesthesia, there is always a risk of upper airway obstruction due to a relaxation of the upper airway muscles. With the advent of nasal high flow (NHF) devices that allow humidified high flow air through the nasal cavity, can be used as a respirato
