Oral rabies vaccine contact by raccoons and nontarget species in a field trial in Florida.

Rabies is enzootic in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in the eastern United States. Oral vaccination of free-ranging raccoons against rabies has the potential to control the disease in a principal reservoir and reduce the risk of rabies exposure among domestic animals and humans. Free-ranging animal contact with baits containing a vaccinia virus recombinant vaccine expressing the rabies glycoprotein gene (V-RG) was monitored in Pinellas County (Florida, USA) from February through May 1997. Bait contact was assessed with 423 tracking plate nights; conducted in four land use zones: single residential,

Socioeconomic vulnerability and the management of domestic animal hosts in urban environments: a one health issue.

BACKGROUND: Within socioeconomically vulnerable communities, dogs and cats are also exposed to deficient sanitation infrastructure, conditions of mistreatment, and malnutrition. This scenario promotes the maintenance of pathogen reservoirs, posing risks to domestic and wild animals, as well as to humans. Considering this context, our objective is to demonstrate how socio-environmental conditions influence the reduction in quality of life and the vulnerability status of these animals, making them more prone to infections and the transmission of zoonotic pathogens. In a cross-sectional study, we

Drug effect and addiction research with insects - From Drosophila to collective reward in honeybees.

Animals and humans share similar reactions to the effects of addictive substances, including those of their brain networks to drugs. Our review focuses on simple invertebrate models, particularly the honeybee (Apis mellifera), and on the effects of drugs on bee behaviour and brain functions. The drug effects in bees are very similar to those described in humans. Furthermore, the honeybee community is a superorganism in which many collective functions outperform the simple sum of individual functions. The distribution of reward functions in this superorganism is unique - although sublimated at

Mapping of Networks to Detect Priority Zoonoses in Jordan.

Early detection of emerging disease events is a priority focus area for cooperative bioengagement programs. Communication and coordination among national disease surveillance and response networks are essential for timely detection and control of a public health event. Although systematic information sharing between the human and animal health sectors can help stakeholders detect and respond to zoonotic diseases rapidly, resource constraints, and other barriers often prevent efficient cross-sector reporting. The purpose of this research project was to map the laboratory and surveillance networ

Risk factors, prevention and communication strategy during Nipah virus outbreak in Malaysia.

An outbreak of acute febrile encephalitis affecting pig-farm workers and owners was recognized in peninsular Malaysia as early as September 1998. The outbreak was initially thought to be due to Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus and thus very intensive prevention, control and communication strategies directed at JE virus were undertaken by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture of Malaysia. There was an immediate change in the prevention, control and communication strategies with focus and strategies on infected pigs as the source of infections for humans and other animals following

Foxp2 mutations and abnormal brain and gastrointestinal development: insights from animal models of speech-language and autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and speech and language disorder (SLD) are distinct neurodevelopmental conditions, yet both share overlapping communication impairments. Forkhead box P2 (FOXP2), a key transcription factor involved in speech and language development, harbors pathogenic mutations such as R553H, which cause SLD and have been suggested to contribute to aspects of ASD-related phenotypes. This review synthesizes insights from animal models to explore the molecular mechanisms by which Foxp2 mutations disrupt the development of the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and enteric nervous system.

Oxytocin Reduces Subjective Fear in Naturalistic Social Contexts via Enhancing Top-Down Middle Cingulate Amygdala Regulation and Brain-Wide Fear Representations.

Accumulating evidence from animal and human studies suggests a fear-regulating potential of the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT), yet the clinical translation into novel interventions for pathological fear requires a behavioral and neurofunctional characterization under close-to-real-life conditions. Here, we combined a naturalistic fMRI-design that elicited strong and immersive fear experience in social and non-social contexts with a preregistered between-subjects randomized double-blind placebo-controlled intranasal OT trial (24 IU, n  =  67 healthy men). OT selectively reduced subjective fear in

Early steps of embryo implantation are regulated by exchange of extracellular vesicles between the embryo and the endometrium.

In early pregnancy, as the embryo arrives in the uterus, intensive communication between the embryo and uterus begins. Hundreds of molecules are known to be involved, but despite numerous findings, full understanding of the complexity of the embryo-maternal dialog remains elusive. Recently, extracellular vesicles, nanoparticles able to transfer functionally active cargo between cells, have emerged as important players in cell-cell communication, and as such, they have gained great attention over the past decade also in reproductive biology. Here, we use a domestic animal model (Sus scrofa) wit

Curcumin ameliorates hypertension via gut-brain communication in spontaneously hypertensive rat.

Gut dysbiosis and dysregulation of gut-brain communication have been identified in hypertensive patients and animal models. Previous studies have shown that probiotic or prebiotic treatments exert positive effects on the pathophysiology of hypertension. This study aimed to examine the hypothesis that the microbiota-gut-brain axis is involved in the antihypertensive effects of curcumin, a potential prebiotic obtained from Curcuma longa. Male 8- to 10-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were divided into four groups: WKY rats and SHRs treated with vehicle

Changes in the Number and Morphology of Dendritic Spines in the Hippocampus and Prefrontal Cortex of the C58/J Mouse Model of Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a broad range of neurobiological characteristics, including alterations in dendritic spines, where approximately 90% of excitatory synapses occur. Therefore, changes in their number or morphology would be related to atypical brain communication. The C58/J inbred mouse strain displays low sociability, impaired communication, and stereotyped behavior; hence, it is considered among the animal models suitable for the study of idiopathic autism. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the dendritic spine differences in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex of C58/J

Hemispheric asymmetry in the fusiform gyrus distinguishes Homo sapiens from chimpanzees.

While the neural basis for linguistic communication has been linked to brain structural asymmetries found only in humans (wider connective spacing is found between the minicolumns of neurons in the left hemisphere language areas), it is unknown if the opposite microanatomical asymmetry exists in the fusiform gyrus which typically supports a right hemisphere bias for face processing. Unlike language, face processing is an ability shared with chimpanzees and, as Darwin observed, the widespread use of facial expressions in animal communication suggests a biological basis. We tested the principle …

Eating Bushmeat Improves Food Security in a Biodiversity and Infectious Disease "Hotspot".

Hunting and consumption of wild animals, colloquially known as "bushmeat," is associated with health trade-offs. Contact with wildlife increases exposure to wildlife-origin zoonotic diseases yet bushmeat is an important nutritional resource in many rural communities. In this study, we test the hypothesis that bushmeat improves food security in communities that hunt and trade bushmeat regularly. We conducted 478 interviews with men and women in six communities near Cross River National Park in Nigeria. We used interview responses to relate prevalence and diversity of bushmeat consumption to hou

Maternal treatment with aripiprazole prevents the development of a valproic acid-induced autism-like phenotype in juvenile male mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) describes a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by deficits in social communication and repetitive behaviors. Aripiprazole (APZ) is an atypical antipsychotic that can safeguard mice against autism-like behavior induced by valproic acid (VPA). In the present study, we examined the effects of maternal treatment with APZ (10 mg/kg) in juvenile mice prenatally exposed to VPA on neurodevelopmental behaviors, social interactions, communication, and working memory, as well as synaptophysin (SYP), synaptosomal-associated protein, 25 kDa (SN

Community-based study on knowledge, attitudes and perception of rabies in Gelephu, south-central Bhutan.

Community knowledge, attitudes and practices are important both for prevention of human deaths due to rabies and for control of the disease in animals. This study was a cross-sectional survey investigating the level of community knowledge as well as attitudes and perceptions about rabies in Gelephu, south-central Bhutan, a region endemic for rabies. A total of 615 household respondents were interviewed, of which 224 (36%) were male and 391 (64%) were female. The majority of respondents had a high level of knowledge, attitudes and perception of rabies and had a positive attitude towards the pre

Interrogating the Diversity of Vaginal, Endometrial, and Fecal Microbiomes in Healthy and Metritis Dairy Cattle.

The bovine genital tract harbors a dynamic microbiome. Genital tract microbial communities in healthy animals have been characterized using next-generation sequencing methods showing that microbe compositions differ between the vagina and uterus, more so during the postpartum period. Pre-calving fecal and vaginal, and endometrial swabs at the different postpartum intervals were collected from dairy cows. Microbiomes in these samples were determined based on bacterial 16S amplicon sequencing and compared between healthy (H; n = 10) control animals and cows that developed metritis (M; n = 10) wi

Older women's experiences of companion animal death: impacts on well-being and aging-in-place.

BACKGROUND: Companion animal death is a common source of grief, although the extent and context of that grief is poorly understood, especially in older adulthood. The aim of this multiple-methods study was to develop a greater understanding of the impact of companion animal death on older women living alone in the community, as older women are a distinct at-risk group, and the supports that should be available to help these individuals with their grief. METHODS: Participants were recruited from across Alberta, a Canadian province, through seniors' organizations, pet rescue groups, and social

Exercise-Induced Extracellular Vesicles as Mediators of Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Insulin Sensitivity in Metabolic Adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and obesity share insulin resistance as a common feature, driven partly by mitochondrial dysfunction. Exercise-induced extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as mediators of inter-organ communication in metabolic regulation. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on exercise-induced EVs in mitochondrial adaptation and insulin sensitivity, and propose an integrative framework linking EV-mediated communication to systemic metabolic benefits: METHODS: Narrative synthesis of mechanistic, animal, EV transfer/inhibition, translational, and human stu

Sub-1.4 cm3 capsule for detecting labile inflammatory biomarkers in situ.

Transient molecules in the gastrointestinal tract such as nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide are key signals and mediators of inflammation. Owing to their highly reactive nature and extremely short lifetime in the body, these molecules are difficult to detect. Here we develop a miniaturized device that integrates genetically engineered probiotic biosensors with a custom-designed photodetector and readout chip to track these molecules in the gastrointestinal tract. Leveraging the molecular specificity of living sensors1, we genetically encoded bacteria to respond to inflammation-associated molec

A mechanically adaptive hydrogel neural interface based on silk fibroin for high-efficiency neural activity recording.

A flexible non-transient electrical platform that can realize bidirectional neural communication from living tissues is of great interest in neuroscience to better understand basic neuroscience and the nondrug therapy of diseases or disorders. The development of soft, biocompatible, and conductive neural interface with mechanical coupling and efficient electrical exchange is a new trend but remains a challenge. Herein, we designed a multifunctional neural electrical communication platform in the form of a mechanically compliant, electrically conductive, and biocompatible hydrogel electrode. Si
