Point-of-care measurement of total thyroxine in African pygmy hedgehogs may be clinically useful, although interpretation remains complex.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize total T4 concentrations and support clinical interpretation of T4 measurements in African pygmy hedgehogs. METHODS: This retrospective, observational study evaluated T4 concentrations in hedgehogs presented to a primarily first-opinion exotic animal practice from October 2023 through November 2025. Thyroxine concentrations were measured using an enzyme immunoassay (EIA)-based point-of-care analyzer. A clinically screened subgroup (n = 15) was defined using clinical, imaging, and laboratory criteria to characterize the observed T4 range. Exploratory subgroup comparis

Spatial heterogeneity in exposure to Brucella suis and pathogenic leptospires in feral pigs across New South Wales.

Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are important reservoirs for zoonotic and livestock pathogens in Australia, but robust information on the spatial distribution of pathogens in pig populations remains limited. We analysed serological data from a systematic, state-wide surveillance program to investigate spatial heterogeneity in exposure to Brucella suis and pathogenic leptospires in feral pigs across New South Wales (NSW). Samples were collected from 2548 feral pigs at 81 locations between 2022 and 2026 and tested for antibodies to B. suis, L. interrogans serovars Pomona (hereafter Pomona) and Hardjo, L

Microanalysis of the stomach of southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor): Histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and scanning electron microscopic studies.

This study was designed to provide more detailed knowledge on the stomach histochemistry and immunohistochemistry in the southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor). Two animals were used in the present work. Periodic acid Schiff's (PAS) and Alcian blue were used for histochemical purposes. SOX9, gastrin, serotonin, and glucagon markers were traced immunohistochemically. The mucosa was extremely folded in the fundus with numerous opening of glands. The body and pylorus mucosa were almost smooth and equipped with gastric gland openings. A simple columnar epithelium covered the stomach

Drivers and potential distribution of anthrax occurrence and incidence at national and sub-county levels across Kenya from 2006 to 2020 using INLA.

Anthrax is caused by, Bacillus anthracis, a soil-borne bacterium that infects grazing animals. Kenya reported a sharp increase in livestock anthrax cases from 2005, with only 12% of the sub-counties (decentralised administrative units used by Kenyan county governments to facilitate service provision) accounting for almost a third of the livestock cases. Recent studies of the spatial extent of B. anthracis suitability across Kenya have used approaches that cannot capture the underlying spatial and temporal dependencies in the surveillance data. To address these limitations, we apply the first B

Systemic CD3+ T-Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia in a Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps): Clinical, Therapeutic, and Pathological Findings.

A three-year-old male bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) exhibited acute anorexia. Biochemistry revealed mild hyperproteinemia (88 g/L) and elevated liver enzymes (ALT 60 U/L, AST 272 U/L), while the hematology report showed marked lymphocytosis. The animal had been clinically normal at a routine examination 10 months earlier. Based on the clinical and laboratory findings, acute lymphoblastic leukemia was suspected. Treatment was initiated with methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg PO q24h), marbofloxacin (10 mg/kg IM q24h), and lomustine (80 mg/m2 PO q14d), calculated according to reptile-specific body

GO-PEG Represses the Progression of Liver Inflammation via Regulating the M1/M2 Polarization of Kupffer Cells.

As a highly promising nanomaterial, exploring the impact of the liver, a vital organ, stands out as a crucial focus in the examination of its biological effects. Kupffer cells (KCs) are one of the first immune cells to contact with exotic-substances in liver. Therefore, this study investigates the immunomodulatory effects and mechanisms of polyethylene glycol-modified graphene oxide (GO-PEG) on KCs. Initial RNA-seq and KEGG pathway analyses reveal the inhibition of the TOLL-like receptor, TNF-α and NOD-like receptor pathways in continually stimulated KCs exposed to GO-PEG. Subsequent biologica

Pathophysiology of ocular toxoplasmosis: Facts and open questions.

Infections with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii are frequent, but one of its main consequences, ocular toxoplasmosis (OT), remains poorly understood. While its clinical description has recently attracted more attention and publications, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are only sparsely elucidated, which is partly due to the inherent difficulties to establish relevant animal models. Furthermore, the particularities of the ocular environment explain why the abundant knowledge on systemic toxoplasmosis cannot be just transferred to the ocular situation. However, studies unde

Peste des petits ruminants in China since its first outbreak in 2007: A 10-year review.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly infectious disease of small ruminants and caused by small ruminant morbillivirus (SRMV), formerly called peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV). This disease is circulating in Africa (except most countries in southern Africa), the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, and Central, East and South-East Asia. Peste des petits ruminants is still regarded as an exotic disease in China, where its first outbreak was reported in the Ngari region of Tibet in 2007, but effectively controlled by slaughter, vaccination and animal movement restriction in PPR-infe

Antimicrobial-Resistant Enterobacterales Recovered from the Environment of Two Zoological Institutions Include Enterobacter cloacae Complex ST171 Producing KPC-4 Carbapenemase.

Environmental surfaces can serve as reservoirs for pathogens and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria in healthcare settings. Although active surveillance programs are used in veterinary and human healthcare, unconventional settings like zoological facilities are often overlooked, even though antimicrobials are used to maintain the health of their animal collections. Here, we used electrostatic cloths to conduct active environmental surveillance over a 2-year period at two zoological institutions to determine contamination prevalence of human-only and mixed animal-human touch environments wi

Evaluating threats to an endangered species by proxy: air pollution as threat to the blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) in South Africa.

BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE: The blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) is one of the most threatened bird species in southern Africa. Among terrestrial birds, its plumage is known to be the most water repellent, an adaptation to foraging on the wing in dense fog. Despite this unique adaptation, the nesting success of the blue swallow at the Blue Swallow Natural Heritage Site (BSNHS) is lower during years with high incidence of fog. As the phenomenon is not observed at other nesting sites, we hypothesized that this is due to changes in the air chemistry at the BSNHS. In the immediate proximity of

Potential Animal Reservoir of Mycobacterium ulcerans: A Systematic Review.

Mycobacterium ulcerans is the causative agent of Buruli ulcer, also known in Australia as Daintree ulcer or Bairnsdale ulcer. This destructive skin disease is characterized by extensive and painless necrosis of the skin and soft tissue with the formation of large ulcers, commonly on the leg or arm. To date, 33 countries with tropical, subtropical and temperate climates in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Western Pacific have reported cases of Buruli ulcer. The disease is rarely fatal, although it may lead to permanent disability and/or disfigurement if not treated appropriately or in time. I

Sarcocystosis from a One Health perspective: Revisiting zoonotic potential, transmission dynamics, clinical features, and control strategies.

Sarcocystosis is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by apicomplexan parasites of the genus Sarcocystis, which can infect a wide range of hosts, including humans, animals, reptiles, and birds. Humans may serve as either definitive or intermediate hosts, depending on Sarcocystis species. Consumption of undercooked beef containing mature sarcocysts of Sarcocystis hominis or Sarcocystis heydorni, or of raw or partially cooked pork containing Sarcocystis suihominis zoitocysts, may lead to intestinal sarcocystosis in humans. In contrast, muscular sarcocystosis follows ingestion of food or water con
