N-3-pyridylmethyl-N'-p-nitrophenylurea ocular toxicity in man and rabbits.

Ingestion of the rat poison N-3-pyridylmethyl-N'-p-nitrophenylurea (PNU) produced ocular toxicity in three humans and in an animal model, the Dutch Belted rabbit. The electroretinogram b wave was especially susceptible to the effects of the rodenticide, and the target tissue appeared to be the retinal pigment epithelium. Injection of PNU itself did not produce ocular toxicity. The poison had to be administered orally. Gentamicin administered orally with PNU prevented the ocular toxicity. Presumably this antibiotic killed those gastrointestinal bacteria responsible for PNU's metabolism into an

The Usefulness of MS3 to Confirm Poisoning on the Example of Dog Poisoning with Strychnine.

Strychnine is an alkaloid with strong toxic properties. Poisoning results in muscular contractions and death through asphyxiation. Intentional or accidental poisonings with strychnine occur mainly in small animals, especially dogs and occasionally cats. Strychnine can be detected in the liver or stomach contents. Unfortunately, the determination of strychnine in these matrices, especially in postmortem examination, is subject to a significant matrix effect that makes it difficult to confirm the presence of the substance being determined. Therefore, we developed a new liquid chromatography meth

Teenagers with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) poisoning.

We report 2 cases of teenagers who were poisoned with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) and presented to the emergency department with a severe acute anticholinergic toxidrome after ingestion of several hundred seeds. The patients presented with visual hallucinations, disorientation, incomprehensible and nonsensical speech, and dilated sluggish pupils. Both patients required restraints for combativeness until adequate sedation with lorazepam and haloperidol was achieved. Jimson weed is found in southern Canada and the United States and can cause acute anticholinergic poisoning and death in human

The clinical toxicology of carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a dangerous exogenous poison and an essential endogenous neurotransmitter. This gas when inhaled has an anaesthetic effect, which is poorly understood, but which may be fatal if compensatory mechanisms are exhausted, if cardiac oxygen (O(2)) needs exceed myocardial oxygenation and/or if apnoea or asphyxia onsets. Although there is considerable evidence that hypoxia occurs late in CO poisoning, both the treatment of acutely poisoned people and environmental exposure limits are largely based on a hypoxic theory of toxicity. The significance of recent demonstrations of inc

Combined effects of quetiapine and opioids: A study of autopsy cases, drug users and sedation in rats.

Fatal opioid poisonings often involve methadone or morphine. This study aimed to elucidate if quetiapine, a widely used sedative antipsychotic medication, may increase the risk of fatal opioid poisoning by additive inhibitory effects on the central nervous system. We used data from 323 cases of fatal methadone or/and morphine poisonings autopsied from 2013 to 2020, a survey of 34 drug users, and performed blinded placebo-controlled studies in 75 Flinders Resistant Line rats receiving three cumulative intraperitoneal doses of vehicle, methadone (2.5, 10 and 15 mg/kg), morphine (3.75, 15 and 22.

Isolation of enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus from pet dogs and cats: a public health implication.

Staphylococcus aureus is a globally distributed bacterium causing wide variety of illnesses in humans, which attributed to its ability to produce wide array of virulence factors, including enterotoxins that are responsible for staphylococcal food poisoning outbreaks. The current study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of enterotoxigenic S. aureus among pet dogs and cats and its public health implication. For this purpose, nasal, oral, and wound swabs were collected from 70 dogs and 47 cats, whereas nasal swabs were collected from 26 human contacts. All samples were examined for the

Morphological studies on experimental oleander poisoning in cattle.

Oleander poisoning has been reported in man and animals. The present experiments address the gross and microscopic changes due to oleander poisoning in cattle. Minimum lethal doses (50 mg/kg) of oleander leaves were orally administered to three calves in a single dose each of the other three animals received the same lethal dose in three equal parts with 24-h intervals. The lesions in the three animals which received 50 mg/kg in a single dose resulted from the direct effect of the toxin on the vascular endothelial bed and demonstrated as petechial and diffused haemorrhages, congestion, oedema,

Effects of lead on the renal response to extracellular volume expansion.

Subacute lead exposure has been observed to inhibit the natriuretic response to isotonic saline expansion in adult female rats. Three-week exposure to 0.5% lead acetate in drinking water resulted in a moderately high blood lead concentration of 57 micrograms/100 ml and up to 60% inhibition of the natriuretic response to extracellular volume expansion. This ability of lead to inhibit natriuresis following volume expansion (an induced stress) may be a more sensitive index of lead poisoning than alterations of renal function in nonstressed animals. Lead exposure had no effect on GFR or plasma ald

Eyes Instead of Ears: Eye Injuries Following Ocular Exposure to Otic Medications.

To determine the epidemiology of ocular exposures and toxicoses in dogs and cats from otic products, 79 dog and cat cases with an ocular exposure to a topical otic medication were retrieved from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Poison Control Center database. Prescription products were involved in 75/79 (95%) of cases, and over-the-counter products in 4 (5%). Clinical signs included conjunctivitis, blepharospasm, epiphora, ocular discharge, and corneal ulceration. Medication error, specifically involving mistaken identification (i.e., an otic product confuse

Method for the detection of desmethylbromethalin in animal tissue samples for the determination of bromethalin exposure.

Bromethalin, a potent neurotoxin, is widely available for use as a rodenticide. As access to other rodenticides is reduced due to regulatory pressure, the use of bromethalin is likely to increase with a concomitant increase in poisonings in nontarget animals. Analytical methods for the detection of bromethalin residues in animals suspected to have been exposed to this rodenticide are needed to support post-mortem diagnosis of toxicosis. This paper describes a novel method for the analysis of desmethylbromethalin (DMB), bromethalin's toxic metabolite, in tissue samples such as liver, brain, and

Toxic Risks of Nightshade Species: A comprehensive review of the documented toxicity of Atropa belladonna, Solanum dulcamara, and Solanum nigrum.

The Solanaceae family comprises numerous species of economic and pharmacological importance, including the toxic deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara), and black nightshade (Solanum nigrum). These plants are native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, and have been used since ancient times in both ritual practices and medicine. A. belladonna contains potent tropane alkaloids (atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine) and is widely utilized in modern pharmacology, although accidental poisonings still occur, often due to confusion with edible plant

Acute poisoning with acetamiprid: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acetamiprid is a potent new first-generation neonicotinoid insecticide in agricultural practices. It is well described that it has low toxicity among animals and is lethal if consumed in large amounts. However, toxicity in humans is rarely reported in literature. Here, we describe acetamiprid toxicity complicated with severe lactic acidosis, myocardial ischemia, refractory hypotension, and severe hypokalemia in a middle-aged man who presented with deliberate self-harming with acetamiprid poisoning in Sri Lanka. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of acute poisoning with an aceta

Suspected paediatric pesticide poisoning in the UK. II--Home Accident Surveillance System 1989-1991.

1. Between 1989 and 1991, 121,708 children less than 10 years old attended 22 Accident and Emergency (A & E) Departments in the UK as a result of an accident at home; 6,478 of these were cases of suspected poisoning. 2. Two hundred and fifty (124 boys and 126 girls) of 6,478 cases involved pesticides. Forty two per cent of these children were thought to have been poisoned by rodenticides, 33% by a different animal poison, 13% by an herbicide or fungicide, 7% by creosote and 5% by mothballs; a pattern similar to that observed in previous years. 3. Fifty-seven of 250 children (23%) were admitted

Persistence of brodifacoum in cockroach and woodlice: implications for secondary poisoning during rodent eradications.

When planning rodent eradications, that normally involve the use of the anticoagulant poison brodifacoum, it is imperative to minimise impacts on other "non-target" species that dwell alongside the targeted rodents and may indeed be the intended beneficiaries of the eradication. Such impacts can arise either from primary poisoning when the non-target species ingest bait pellets containing toxicant or by secondary poisoning when the non-target species eats prey that has itself eaten brodifacoum. Cockroaches and woodlice, likely to scavenge bait pellets, are widely distributed on tropical and su

Metal toxicosis in horses.

The ubiquity and stability of metals in the environment make them unique as a pollutant or an essential dietary component. Metals are neither created nor destroyed by chemical processes but are redistributed in the environment. In combination with other elements, metal compounds and alloys are essential materials of the contemporary world. Inappropriate use or distribution in the environment leads to adverse health effects on all biologic systems, including horses. Gastrointestinal upset is a common feature of acute toxicosis with metals in general. Among the metals discussed, arsenic and inor

Organophosphorus poisoning in two Rex rabbits.

A case of organophosphorus (OP) poisoning in two Rex rabbits is described. Three animals were diagnosed as having dermatitis characterised by pruritus and alopecia due to infestation with Cheyletiella parasitivorax. Two of the animals were dipped in 2% malathion solution: one died within 15 hours post-dipping, the other was euthanased subsequent to the onset of convulsions. A procedure for the future dipping of rabbits is suggested, and a recommendation is made for a lower concentration of malathion to be used.
