Human infection with parasites is still one of the big problems worldwide. Medicinal plants succeeded to overcome a variety of protozoan and helminthic parasites. In this study, Salvadora persica root extracts (SE) were used to treat helminthosis and coccideosis. Three doses were used (200, 100 and 50 mg/ml) to study the anthelmintic activity of S. persica. The review chronologically considers the main classes of the currently available anthelminthic substances: early anthelmintic compounds, benzimidazoles, imidazolthiazoles, tetrahydropyrimidines, avermectins and milbemycins, and salicylanilides. Great attention is paid to novel substances (emodepside, monepantel, derquantel, tribendimidine) and promising developments. Some aspects of the molecular mechanisms of action of anthelmintics, their resistance, and alternative dehelmintization methods are discussed.

This study aimed to report the presence of parasites resistant to the most used anthelmintic drugs in sheep in Colombia. Four farms (denominated farm 1, 2, 3 and 4) were selected where the animals were not treated with anthelmintics for two months before the trial. Three of 9 chimpanzees reared in a zoological garden in Japan were subjected to fecal worm count and morphometric observation, and all were given oral pyrantel pamoate 6 times at 10-day intervals simultaneously. Isoxazole derivatives have been shown to possess antiparasitic activity. In the present study, 3-substituted 5-methylthio-isoxazoles were synthesized and tested for anthelmintic activity, along with some other isoxazoles which have been reported but not tested earlier. Nine compounds (2a, 2b, 2e, 2g, 2u, 3a, 3b, 3e and 3f) showed activity against both A. ceylanicum and N. dubius in vitro. Twelve compounds (2a, 2b, 2d, 2e, 2f, 2h, 2l, 2n, 2o, 2u, 3d and 3e) showed activity against N. dubius in vivo, a parasite of veterinary importance.
