Symbiotic Bacterial Diversity, Functional Profiling and Antibiotic Susceptibility of the Red Imported Fire Ant.

The red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta, is a globally invasive pest that causes substantial ecological, agricultural, and publ … S. invicta exhibited markedly higher richness and diversity. A total of 1651 amplified sequence variants (ASVs) were identified, of which 1089 ASVs are unique to the RIFAs, and 460 are unique to non-target ants. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) highlighted 33 biomarker taxa (score > 6.5), with strong enrichment of Stenotrophomonas, Serr …

Frequent Queen Replacement and Presence of Unrelated Queens in Colonies of a Functionally Monogynous Ant Species.

In eusocial insects, social parasitism-the exploitation of the host's brood care behavior for survival and reproduction-can occur either within or between species. Parasitic queens invade host nests and aggressively replace the resident queen. While the adoption of conspecific queens is a common feature of species with multiqueen colonies (polygyny), the origin of parasitic founding is not fully understood. Functionally monogynous ants, in which nestmate queens establish social and reproductive hierarchies through biting and antennal boxing, may provide a link between peaceful adoption and soc…

Behavioural biomechanics: leaf-cutter ant cutting behaviour depends on leaf edge geometry.

Leaf-cutter ants cut fresh leaves to grow a symbiotic fungus as crop. During cutting, one mandible is typically anchored onto the leaf lamina while the other slices through it like a knife. When initiating cuts into the leaf edge, however, foragers sometimes deviate from this behaviour and instead use their mandibles symmetrically, akin to scissors. In vivo behavioural assays revealed that the preference for either of the two cutting strategies depended on leaf edge geometry and differed between natural leaf margins that were straight or serrated with notch-like folds: leaf-cutter ants display…

The implementation of robotic dogs in automatic detection and surveillance of red imported fire ant nests.

BACKGROUND: The Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA), scientifically known as Solenopsis invicta, is a destructive invasive species causing considerable harm to ecosystems and generating substantial economic costs globally. Traditional methods for RIFA nests detection are labor-intensive and may not be scalable to larger field areas. This study aimed to develop an innovative surveillance system that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic dogs to automate the detection and geolocation of RIFA nests, thereby improving monitoring and control strategies. RESULTS: The designed surveillance sys

Male genitalia, hierarchical homology, and the anatomy of the bullet ant (Paraponera clavata; Hymenoptera, Formicidae).

The male genitalia of insects are among the most variable, complex, and informative character systems for evolutionary analysis and taxonomic purposes. Because of these general properties, many generations of systematists have struggled to develop a theory of homology and alignment of parts. This struggle continues to the present day, where fundamentally different models and nomenclatures for the male genitalia of Hymenoptera, for example, are applied. Here, we take a multimodal approach to digitalize and comprehensively document the genital skeletomuscular anatomy of the bullet ant (Paraponer

Distinct Biomarkers of ANT Stimulation and Seizure Freedom in an Epilepsy Patient with Ambulatory Hippocampal Electrocorticography.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS) of the hippocampus are the predominant approaches to brain stimulation for treating mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Both are similarly effective at reducing seizures in drug-resistant patients, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In rare cases where it is clinically indicated to use RNS and DBS simultaneously, ambulatory electrophysiology from RNS may provide the opportunity to measure the effects of ANT DBS in the putative seizure onset zone and

Sensitization of Guinea Pig Skin to Imported Fire Ant Alkaloids and Establishment of an Inflammatory Model.

Imported fire ants (IFAs), Solenopsis invicta, release their venom through multiple stings that induce inflammation, allergies, shock, and even death. Although IFA venom protein sensitization and related subcutaneous immunotherapy have been studied, few studies have examined the potential toxicity or pathogenicity of alkaloids, the main substances in IFA venom. Here, IFA alkaloids were identified and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; we further determined an appropriate extraction method and its effectiveness for extracting high-purity alkaloids through comparative analysis and…

Modified Ant Colony Optimization as a Means for Evaluating the Variants of the City Railway Underground Section.

The railway is one of the most energy-efficient modes of transport, helping to enhance the environment and public health in cities and agglo … of the route. These are the location of traffic generators in the city center, the number of inhabitants neighboring the stations, and the number of tram or bus lines integrated with the railway. The presented method and exemplary case study should allow for the evaluation, introduction, or development of the city railway.

ANT(9)-Ic, a Novel Chromosomally Encoded Aminoglycoside Nucleotidyltransferase from Brucella intermedia.

Aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes are among the most important mechanisms of resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics, typically conferring high-level resistance by enzymatic drug inactivation. Previously, we isolated a multidrug-resistant Brucella intermedia strain ZJ499 from a cancer patient, and whole-genome sequencing revealed several putative novel aminoglycoside-modifying enzyme genes in this strain. Here, we report the characterization of one of them that encodes an intrinsic, chromosomal aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferase designated ANT(9)-Ic, which shares only 33.05% to 47.44% amino

Surveillance and invasive risk of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren in China.

BACKGROUND: The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren is one of the world's most successful and destructive invasive ant species. In mainland China, fast, monthly and annual pest reports on all pests have been established since 2010. The distribution of S. invicta resulting from climate change in China was predicted using MaxEnt modeling in combination with comprehensive surveillance data and 56 environmental factors. RESULTS: The fast and monthly reports revealed that S. invicta had spread to new territories almost every year in this timeframe. The transportation of seedlings and d

Correlation of cerebellar granular layer autolysis with ante-mortem systemic acid-base status.

Research in neuroscience relies heavily upon postmortem human brain tissue. Cerebellar granular layer autolysis (GLA) is a surrogate marker for the quality of such tissue and suitability for molecular analysis. GLA is associated with reduced brain tissue pH. The aim of this study was to assess correlation of GLA with premortem systemic acid-base status. This is a retrospective study in which 62 consecutive adult autopsy cases were included. Sections of cerebellum were reviewed microscopically for presence of GLA. Autolysis was graded as negative, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3. Medical records

Volatile Organic Compounds in the Azteca/Cecropia Ant-Plant Symbiosis and the Role of Black Fungi.

Black fungi of the order Chaetothyriales are grown by many tropical plant-mutualistic ants as small so-called "patches" in their nests, which are located inside hollow structures provided by the host plant ("domatia"). These fungi are introduced and fostered by the ants, indicating that they are important for the colony. As several species of Chaetothyriales tolerate, adsorb, and metabolize toxic volatiles, we investigated the composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of selected domatia in the Azteca/Cecropia ant-plant mutualism. Concentrations of VOCs in ant-inhabited domatia, empty d…

Comparison of Total Immunoglobulin G in Ante- and Postmortem Blood Samples from Tissue Donors.

BACKGROUND: A serology testing for infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis) is mandatory in tissue donors. In many donors postmortem blood is the only sample available. Even though serological tests and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAT) used are validated for postmortem blood, a characterization of those blood samples is not yet established. We therefore investigated the total immunoglobulin G (IgG) content in postmortem blood of tissue donors and compared it to a corresponding antemortem blood sample. METHODS: Ante- and postmortem blood samples were obtained from 100 conse

Interstitial lung disease is a major characteristic of anti-KS associated ant-synthetase syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Anti-KS autoantibodies are rare myositis-specific autoantibodies that have been described to target asparaginyl-transfer RNA synthetase. METHODS: Here, we review the published literature on critical issues concerning the detection of anti-KS antibodies and the clinical features associated with their presence. RESULTS: Seven articles are reviewed, in all of which immunoprecipitation was employed for the detection of anti-KS antibodies. A total of 47 patients were included; the ratio of females to males was 1.9:1. In total, 46 (98%) of these patients had interstitial lung disease (

Bottom-Up Proteomic Analysis of Polypeptide Venom Components of the Giant Ant Dinoponera Quadriceps.

Ant species have specialized venom systems developed to sting and inoculate a biological cocktail of organic compounds, including peptide and polypeptide toxins, for the purpose of predation and defense. The genus Dinoponera comprises predatory giant ants that inoculate venom capable of causing long-lasting local pain, involuntary shaking, lymphadenopathy, and cardiac arrhythmias, among other symptoms. To deepen our knowledge about venom composition with regard to protein toxins and their roles in the chemical-ecological relationship and human health, we performed a bottom-up proteomics analys…

Mental health effects caused by red imported fire ant attacks (Solenopsis invicta).

Susceptible individuals who have suffered painful stings caused by red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, usually experience physical health effects such as fever, dizziness, generalized urticaria, or other systemic reactions such as anaphylactic shock. Whether S. invicta stings also have negative effects on mental health is not clear. In the present study, the psychological impact of S. invicta stings was evaluated using a questionnaire that included a previously published posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) checklist, the Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anx…

Differentiating causality and correlation in allometric scaling: ant colony size drives metabolic hypometry.

Metabolic rates of individual animals and social insect colonies generally scale hypometrically, with mass-specific metabolic rates decreasi … sport. We found that larger colonies had lower median walking speeds and relatively more stationary ants and including walking speed as a variable in the mass-scaling allometry greatly reduced the amount of residual variation in the model, reinforcing the role of behaviour in metabolic allometry. Following the experimental size reduction, however, the …

Combined Venom Gland Transcriptomic and Venom Peptidomic Analysis of the Predatory Ant Odontomachus monticola.

Ants (hymenoptera: Formicidae) have adapted to many different environments and have become some of the most prolific and successful insects. To date, 13,258 ant species have been reported. They have been classified into 333 genera and 17 subfamilies. Except for a few Formicinae, Dolichoderinae, and members of other subfamilies, most ant species have a sting with venom. The venoms are composed of formic acid, alkaloids, hydrocarbons, amines, peptides, and proteins. Unlike the venoms of other animals such as snakes and spiders, ant venoms have seldom been analyzed comprehensively, and their comp…

Desiccation resistance in tropical insects: causes and mechanisms underlying variability in a Panama ant community.

Desiccation resistance, the ability of an organism to reduce water loss, is an essential trait in arid habitats. Drought frequency in tropical regions is predicted to increase with climate change, and small ectotherms are often under a strong desiccation risk. We tested hypotheses regarding the underexplored desiccation potential of tropical insects. We measured desiccation resistance in 82 ant species from a Panama rainforest by recording the time ants can survive desiccation stress. Species' desiccation resistance ranged from 0.7 h to 97.9 h. We tested the desiccation adaptation hypothesis, …
