Early life maternal separation induces sex-specific antidepressant-like responses but has minimal effects on adult stress susceptibility in mice.

Early life stress is known to increase the risk of depression and anxiety disorders, which are highly prevalent conditions that disproportionately affect women. However, the results of preclinical studies have been mixed, with some work suggesting that early life stress promotes anxiety-like behavior and/or increases susceptibility to subsequent stressors, and other research suggesting that early life stress reduces anxiety-like behavior and/or confers resilience to subsequent stress exposure. It is likely that factors such as sex and the timing and severity of early life and adult stress expo

Acute angiotensin receptor blockade and mnemonic discrimination in healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: The renin angiotensin system (RAS) is implicated in various cognitive processes relevant to anxiety. However, the role of the RAS in pattern separation, a hippocampal memory mechanism that enables discrete encoding of similar stimuli, is unclear. Given the proposed role of this mechanism in overgeneralization and the maintenance of anxiety, we explored the influence of the RAS on mnemonic discrimination, i.e., the behavioral ability arising from pattern separation. DESIGN: In a double-blind experimental medicine trial, we examined the effect of losartan, an angiotensin receptor bl

Comparative safety and sedation effectiveness of intranasal dexmedetomidine versus midazolam for preoperative anxiety reduction in pediatric surgical patients: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Relieving pre-operative anxiety in children is a major concern for anesthesiologists. Midazolam has been the most commonly used sedative agent due to its long history of efficacy. However, it has been associated with complications, such as agitation, cognitive impairment, amnesia, and respiratory depression. For these reasons, other drugs, such as dexmedetomidine, have been explored as safe and effective alternatives in children undergoing surgery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intranasal dexmedetomidine as compared to intranasal or oral midazolam in reducing p

Memory and language impairments are associated with anxiety disorder severity in childhood.

Introduction Children with anxiety disorders have been suggested to possess deficits in verbal fluency, shifting and attention, with inconsistent results regarding working memory and its subcomponents. This study extends previous findings by analyzing the performance of children with anxiety disorders in a wide range of neuropsychological functions. Methods We evaluated 54 children with a primary diagnosis of an anxiety disorder according to diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) using subtests of a neuropsychological battery. Interpretation modification training reduces social anxiety in clinically anxious children.

The present study was designed to examine the effects of training in positive interpretations in clinically anxious children. A total of 87 children between 7 and 12 years of age were randomly assigned to either a positive cognitive bias modification training for interpretation (CMB-I) or a neutral training. Training included 15 sessions in a two-week period. Children with an interpretation bias prior to training in the positive training group showed a significant reduction in interpretation bias on the social threat scenarios after training, but not children in the neutral training group. No

The Effects of Music Listening During Extraction of the Impacted Mandibular Third Molar on the Autonomic Nervous System and Psychological State.

PURPOSE: Pain, anxiety, and nervousness related to dental procedures can cause acute changes in the autonomic nervous system. Music is widely accepted as a relaxation method during dental treatment; however, its effects during dental treatment are unclear. The authors explored the effects of listening to music during extraction of the impacted mandibular third molar on the autonomic nervous system and the psychological state and hypothesized that listening to music would suppress sympathetic nervous activity and decrease anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 40 patients s

Social phobia: a debilitating disease that needs treatment.

Social phobia is a recognized clinical condition and is at least as well defined as other psychiatric disorders in which no brain damage has been identified. There are both qualitative and quantitative differences between pathological and normal anxiety. The separation of social phobia from normal shyness is clear from the distress suffered, the impact on daily activities, the duration of the condition and the qualitative difference of the anxiety experienced in social phobia.

Psychological burden in Indian adults with type 2 diabetes: prevalence, overlap and predictors of diabetes distress, depression and anxiety - a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing recognition of the mental health consequences of type 2 diabetes (T2D), the prevalence, overlap and associated factors of psychological burden-encompassing diabetes distress (DD), depression and anxiety remain underexplored in the Indian population. This study aimed to examine these dimensions among Indian adults with T2D. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1925 adults (≥18 years) with T2D enrolled in an online diabetes management programme at the Freedom from Diabetes Clinic, Pune, India (December 2023 to December 2024). Threat interpretation bias as a vulnerability factor in childhood anxiety disorders.

The present study examined threat interpretation biases in children 7-12 years of age with separation, social and generalised anxiety disorders (N=15), non-anxious offspring at risk due to parental anxiety (N=16) and non-anxious controls of non-anxious parents (N=14). Children provided interpretations of ambiguous situations to assess cognitive, emotional and behavioural responses. In comparison with non-anxious control children and at-risk children who did not differ from each other, anxious children reported stronger negative emotion and less ability to influence ambiguous situations. These

Two-stage therapy for agoraphobia.

This paper describes a course of therapy with an agoraphobic female patient. Therapy consisted of two stages: In the first stage, behavioral procedure was applied; in the second, a shift toward exploration of deep cognitive structures was initiated. The advantages of such a therapeutic strategy with agoraphobics are reviewed.

Pathologic grief and its relationship to other psychiatric disorders.

The authors defined explicit criteria for the diagnosis of pathologic grief, and used the criteria to examine the relationship between pathologic grief and two disorders: major depression and anxiety disorders (panic and generalized anxiety), in a sample of 25 bereaved persons. Sixty-four percent of the sample met the criteria for pathologic grief. Pathologic grief was only significantly associated with major depressive disorder. It was also associated with high scores on dimensional measures of anxiety and depression. The most frequent complication of bereavement appeared to be an anxious sub

Aetiological overlap between anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity symptom dimensions in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADH) problems are common in adolescence, often co-occur, and are characterised by high heterogeneity in their phenotypic expressions. Although it is known that anxiety and ADH problems correlate, the relationships between subtypes of anxiety and ADH problems have been scarcely investigated. METHODS: Using a large population sample of adolescent twins and siblings we explored the phenotypic and aetiological association between anxiety subtypes (panic/agoraphobia, separation anxiety, social anxiety, physical injury fears, obsessive-compul

Psychometric properties of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale with young adolescents.

The psychometric properties of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) were examined with 875 adolescents aged 13 and 14 years. This self-report measure was designed to evaluate symptoms relating to separation anxiety, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic-agoraphobia, generalized anxiety, and fears of physical injury. Results of confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses supported six factors consistent with the hypothesized subtypes of anxiety. There was support also for a model in which the first-order factors loaded significantly on a single second-order factor of anxiet

Factor structure of social fears: The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

In the assessment of social anxiety, investigators often differentiate between social interactional anxiety and performance anxiety. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), a clinician-administered measure of social anxiety and avoidance, was originally developed with separate subscales for the assessment of fear and avoidance of situations involving social interaction and performance/observation by others. Separate confirmatory factor analyses of the LSAS fear and avoidance ratings demonstrated that this two-factor model did not provide an adequate fit to the data, suggesting the need to f

Attenuated positive psychotic symptoms and social anxiety: Along a psychotic continuum or different constructs?

Social anxiety commonly occurs across the course of schizophrenia, including in the premorbid and prodromal phases of psychotic disorders. Some have posited that social anxiety may exist on a continuum with paranoia; however, empirical data are lacking. The study aim was to determine whether attenuated positive psychotic symptoms are related to social anxiety. Young adults (N=1378) were administered the Prodromal Questionnaire (PQ), which measures attenuated positive psychotic symptoms (APPS), and the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), which measures a subset of social anxiety symptoms. Confirmatory f

Maternal separation prior to neonatal hypoxia-ischemia: Impact on emotional aspects of behavior and markers of synaptic plasticity in hippocampus.

Exposure to early-life stress is associated with long-term alterations in brain and behavior, and may aggravate the outcome of neurological insults. This study aimed at investigating the possible interaction between maternal separation, a model of early stress, and subsequent neonatal hypoxia-ischemia on emotional behavior and markers of synaptic plasticity in hippocampus. Therefore, rat pups (N=60) were maternally separated for a prolonged (MS 180min) or a brief (MS 15min) period during the first six postnatal days, while a control group was left undisturbed. Hypoxia-ischemia was applied to a

Effect of exercise on learning and memory in a rat model of developmental stress.

Adverse life events occurring in early development can result in long-term effects on behavioural, physiological and cognitive processes. In particular, perinatal stressors impair neurogenesis in the hippocampus which consequently impairs memory formation. Exercise has previously been shown to have antidepressant effects and to increase cognitive functioning by increasing neurogenesis and neurotrophins in the hippocampus. The current study examined the effects of maternal separation, which has been shown to model anxiety in animals, and the effects of exercise on learning and memory. Forty-fiv
