Altered sensitization patterns to sweet food stimuli in patients recovered from anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Recent studies show that higher-order appetitive neural circuitry may contribute to restricted eating in anorexia nervosa (AN) and overeating in bulimia nervosa (BN). The purpose of this study was to determine whether sensitization effects might underlie pathologic eating behavior when a taste stimulus is administered repeatedly. Recovered AN (RAN, n=14) and BN (RBN, n=15) subjects were studied in order to avoid the confounding effects of altered nutritional state. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measured higher-order brain response to repeated tastes of sucrose (caloric) and sucr

Repeated exposure of adult rats to transient oxidative stress induces various long-lasting alterations in cognitive and behavioral functions.

Exposure of neonates to oxidative stress may increase the risk of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia in adulthood. However, the effects of moderate oxidative stress on the adult brain are not completely understood. To address this issue, we systemically administrated 2-cyclohexen-1-one (CHX) to adult rats to transiently reduce glutathione levels. Repeated administration of CHX did not affect the acquisition or motivation of an appetitive instrumental behavior (lever pressing) rewarded by a food outcome under a progressive ratio schedule. In addition, response discrimination and revers

[The role of muscarinic cholinoreceptors in the retrieval of the instrumental food conditioned reflex in cats].

It was demonstrated in cat experiments that impairment of the retrieval of appetitive instrumental conditioning observed after systemic administration of antagonists of muscarinic central cholinoreceptors scopolamine (a nonselective M1 antagonist) and trihexyphenidyl (relatively selective M1 antagonist) could be connected with central and peripheral side effects of these antagonists. It was established that in case of the absence of side effects (low doses of trihexyphenidyl, 1 mg/kg) the blockade of M1-cholinoreceptors led either to selective fall-off of the motor instrumental reaction with i

Brain cannabinoid CB1 receptor signaling modulates reward responses and inhibitory control in humans.

The central endocannabinoid system, particularly the in vivo cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor signaling, presents a promising target for treating eating disorders. However, its precise role in appetite control remains unclear. This study aimed to determine how CB1 receptor signaling contributes to key aspects of appetite regulation, specifically anticipatory food reward responses and inhibitory control. Forty-one healthy male participants underwent [18F]FMPEP-d2 positron emission tomography (PET) to quantify CB1 receptor availability. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to a

Sex-dependent effects of acute stress in adolescence or adulthood on appetitive motivation.

RATIONALE: Intensely stressful experiences can lead to long-lasting changes in appetitive and aversive behaviors. In humans, post-traumatic stress disorder increases the risk of comorbid appetitive disorders including addiction and obesity. We have previously shown that an acute stressful experience in adult male rats suppresses motivation for natural reward. OBJECTIVES: We examine the impact of sex and age on the effects of intense stress on action-based (instrumental) and stimulus-based (Pavlovian) motivation for natural reward (food). METHODS: Rats received 15 unsignaled footshocks (stres

Plant-based meat analogues enhance the gastrointestinal motility function and appetite of mice by specific volatile compounds and peptides.

Eating behavior is critical for maintaining energy homeostasis. Previous studies have found that plant-based meat analogues increased diet intake in mice compared with animal meat under a free feeding mode, however the reasons were unclear. To explore the underlying mechanisms of plant-based meat analogues increasing diet intake, mice were fed animal or plant-based pork and beef analogue diets, respectively. Biochemical and histological analyses were performed to evaluate appetite-regulating hormones and gastrointestinal motility function. Peptiomics and GC-IMS were applied to identify key sub

Pheromones modulate reward responsiveness and non-associative learning in honey bees.

Pheromones are chemical messengers that trigger stereotyped behaviors and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species. Recent reports suggest that pheromones can modulate behaviors not directly related to the pheromonal message itself and contribute, in this way, to behavioral plasticity. We tested this hypothesis by studying the effect of pheromones on sucrose responsiveness and habituation in honey bees. We exposed workers to three pheromone components: geraniol, which in nature is used in an appetitive context, and isopentyl acetate (IPA) and 2-heptanone (2H), which signal

A pharmacologic comparison of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine and LSD in the chronic spinal dog.

MDA (2.0 and 2.2 mg/kg) was compared to LSD (10 microgram/kg) and d-amphetamine (3.2 mg/kg) in single dose, antagonism, cross tolerance and appetite suppression studies. In single doses MDA specifically resembled d-amphetamine by producing marked mydriasis, nictitating membrane retraction, stereotypy and darting eye movements and LSD by markedly facilitating the flex or reflex, producing continuous stepping, whining and eye tracking movements. LSD and MDA increased respiration, body temperature and the latency of the skin twitch reflex and produced behavioral arousal. Cyproheptadine antagonize

Behavioral and electroantennographic responses of the tea mosquito, Helopeltis theivora, to female sex pheromones.

Responses of the tea mosquito, Helopeltis theivora (Waterhouse) (Hemiptera: Miridae), a major pest of tea, to female sex pheromone compounds were measured using wind tunnel and electroantennogram (EAG) bioassays. In the wind tunnel, male tea mosquitoes were found to be most attracted to a dichloromethane extract of the female thorax. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of female thoracic extracts and dynamic head space samples of virgin females showed the presence of five compounds: (Z)-3 hexenyl acetate, (Z)-3 hexenyl butanoate, (E)-2 hexenyl pentanoate, 2,4 dimethyl pentana

Examining the momentary relationships between body checking and eating disorder symptoms in women with anorexia nervosa.

Body checking is common among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and increases risk for dietary restriction. However, no study has examined whether body checking increases the immediate risk for engaging in other harmful weight loss behaviors, or whether this relationship is moderated by person-level traits. The current study utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine whether (a) body checking predicted rapid use of weight loss behaviors, and (b) whether eating-related obsessionality/compulsivity moderated this relationship. Women with full or subthreshold anorexia nervosa (

Foraging devices as enrichment in captive walruses (Odobenus rosmarus).

Stereotypies in captive animals are typically defined as repetitive, invariant behavioral patterns with no obvious goal or function. They are often attributed to boredom or fear and treated by introducing occupational stimuli. The present work on captive walruses examined the relationship between walrus stereotypies and species-typical foraging behaviors engaged in by their wild counterparts. Two types of walrus stereotypies were studied: (a) patterned swimming around their pool, or (b) repetitive sucking of some item, typically their own flipper. We tested two enrichment devices under filled

Inhibition of sodium appetite by lipopolysaccharide: involvement of alpha2-adrenoceptors.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an endotoxin from the wall of Escherichia coli, produces a general behavioral inhibition and affects several aspects of fluid-electrolyte balance. LPS inhibits thirst; however, it is not clear if it also inhibits sodium appetite. The present results show that LPS (0.3-2.5 mg/kg body wt) injected intraperitoneally produces a dose-dependent reduction of sodium appetite expressed as 0.3 M NaCl intake induced by sodium depletion (furosemide plus removal of ambient sodium for 24 h). The high doses of LPS (1.2-2.5 mg/kg) also produced transient hypothermia at the beginning

Neglected GLP-1 receptors in the eyes and nose: possible correlation with regulation of appetite.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptors (GLP-1Rs) have been widely explored for their role in glucose homeostasis, appetite regulation and cardiovascular function. While their distribution in pancreas, gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system is well established, the presence and function of GLP-1Rs in eyes and nose remain underexplored. This review investigates emerging evidence of GLP-1R expression in nasal and ocular tissues and their potential role in appetite regulation. GLP-1Rs in olfactory system may contribute to cephalic phase insulin release and influence food-related behavior thro

Anorexigenic effect of serotonin is associated with changes in hypothalamic nuclei activity in an avian model.

The anorexigenic effect of serotonin (5HT) has been documented for decades; however, its central mechanism has not been fully elucidated, especially so in non-mammalian vertebrates. Therefore, we centrally injected 5HT to chicks and measured several appetite-associated parameters. Chicks that received central 5HT dose- and time-dependently decreased food intake while water intake was not affected. To determine which hypothalamic nuclei were associated with this effect c-Fos immunoreactivity was measured in appetite-associated nuclei. Only the ventromedial hypothalamus and arcuate nucleus were

Ingestive responses to administration of stress hormones in baboons.

Experimental stress and the administration of the stress hormone ACTH have been reported to stimulate sodium appetite in many nonprimate species. Experiments were conducted to determine whether prolonged intracerebroventricular infusions of the neuropeptides corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and urocortin (Ucn), or systemic administration of ACTH, affected ingestive behaviors in a nonhuman primate, the baboon. Intracerebroventricular infusions of CRF or Ucn significantly decreased daily food intake. The decrease with Ucn continued into the postinfusion period. These infusions did not alter

Was it something I ate? Understanding the bidirectional interaction of migraine and appetite neural circuits.

Migraine attacks can involve changes of appetite: while fasting or skipping meals are often reported triggers in susceptible individuals, hunger or food craving are reported in the premonitory phase. Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest and recognition of the importance of studying these overlapping fields of neuroscience, which has led to novel findings. The data suggest additional studies are needed to unravel key neurobiological mechanisms underlying the bidirectional interaction between migraine and appetite. Herein, we review information about the metabolic migraine phe

Self-restraint spillover: Inhibitory control disrupts appetite regulation among ruminators.

OBJECTIVE: People can use inhibitory control to temporarily inhibit their personal preferences to achieve their long-term goals. According to the ego fixation model (Koole et al., 2014), ruminators have difficulties relaxing inhibitory control, leading them to continue inhibiting their personal needs, even when this is no longer required by the situation. Inhibitory control may thus disrupt healthy appetite regulation among ruminators. METHOD: Among 324 Dutch undergraduate students (218 women; Mage  = 21.5), different inhibitory control states were manipulated by varying whether or not partic

Evaluation of Horses' Daytime Activity Budget in a Model of Ethological Stable: A Case Study in Italy.

The increasing interest in animal welfare and the knowledge of equine physiological and ethological needs have led to the development of different types of horses' management and housing systems. The research presented here aimed to assess the daytime activity budget of horses. Focal animal sampling was used as an observational sampling method, and the five animals were observed for a total of 9920 minutes in the paddock and inside the stall. The results showed that horses spent most of the daytime in foraging behaviors, followed by resting behaviors, and locomotion. Social behaviors (s.e. all

Sex-specific effects of appetite suppressants on stereotypy in rats.

This study investigated the sex-specific effects of commonly prescribed appetite suppressants on body weight and the manifestation of motor side effects, specifically stereotypy. Employing video recordings and DeepLabCut (DLC) for precise behavioral quantification, we analyzed stereotypy, defined as purposeless, repetitive motor behaviors, in male and female rats. Under control (saline) conditions, male rats exhibited a greater propensity for weight gain compared to females. However, in contrast, female rats demonstrated greater and more homogenous weight loss than males following the administ
