Environmental exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents.

Exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents, the most deadly chemical warfare agents, is possible in a variety of situations, such as destruction of chemical warfare agents, terrorist attacks, armed conflicts or accidents in research laboratories and storage facilities. Hundreds of thousands of tons of chemical munitions were disposed of at the sea in the post World War II period, with European, Russian, Japanese and US coasts being the most affected. Sulfur mustard, Lewisite and nerve agents appear to be the most frequently chemical warfare agents disposed of at the sea. Addressing the overall …

Predicting domestic and community violence by soldiers living in a conflict region.

OBJECTIVE: Past research revealed war trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms as potential predictors for domestic and community violence in crisis regions and among soldiers in different armed conflicts. The impact of family violence and other adversities experienced in childhood as well as of a combat-enhanced appeal for aggressive behavior (appetitive aggression) remains to be specified. METHOD: In the present study, the authors separately predicted violence against children, intimate partner violence and community violence in 381 Burundian soldiers returning from foreign …

Why have the majority of recent polio cases occurred in countries affected by Islamist militancy? A historical comparative analysis of the political determinants of polio in Nigeria, Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Syria.

This article aims to understand why the last few areas where polio remains are affected by armed conflicts involving militant organizations that use Islam to legitimize their activities. The first section critically analyses the argument that Muslims' animosity towards polio vaccination programmes is a consequence of their irrational, backward, anti-Western theology. This argument is depoliticizing, ahistorical and orientalist. Moreover, it does not explain why Islamist militant groups' attitudes to polio vaccination campaigns vary between countries. The second section analyses official docume…

Shell shock and mild traumatic brain injury: a historical review.

Mild traumatic brain injury is now claimed to be the signature injury of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. During World War I, shell shock came to occupy a similar position of prominence, and postconcussional syndrome assumed some importance in World War II. In this article, the nature of shell shock, its clinical presentation, the military context, hypotheses of causation, and issues of management are explored to discover whether there are contemporary relevancies to the current issue of mild traumatic brain injury. When shell shock was first postulated, it was assumed to be the product of

HIV-tuberculosis co-infection in conflict zones of Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria bears a high burden of infectious diseases, with the second-highest human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence globally and the largest tuberculosis (TB) burden in Africa. The country faces significant challenges from armed conflicts, insurgency, kidnapping and banditry, which severely strain its healthcare system, particularly for people living with HIV (PLHIV). This study hypothesizes that PLHIV in conflict-affected regions of Nigeria experience a higher burden of TB than those in non-conflict areas. METHODS: This cross-sectional household survey utilised a two-stage …

Vulnerability to high risk sexual behaviour (HRSB) following exposure to war trauma as seen in post-conflict communities in eastern uganda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Much of the literature on the relationship between conflict-related trauma and high risk sexual behaviour (HRSB) often focuses on refugees and not mass in-country displaced people due to armed conflicts. There is paucity of research about contexts underlying HRSB and HIV/AIDS in conflict and post-conflict communities in Uganda. Understanding factors that underpin vulnerability to HRSB in post-conflict communities is vital in designing HIV/AIDS prevention interventions. We explored the socio-cultural factors, social interactions, socio-cultural practices, social norms and social net…

Global Disparities in Cancer Care for Conflict-Affected Populations: Africa's Neglected Crisis.

Cancer care in conflict-affected settings represents a growing yet underrecognized global health crisis, disproportionately affecting populations in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Africa. With over 130 million people forcibly displaced worldwide, conflict-driven disruptions to health systems have created profound gaps across the cancer care continuum, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and palliative care. In these settings, cancer is often deprioritized in favor of acute and communicable diseases, resulting in delayed diagnosis, treatment interruptions, and poor out

Exploratory study of the impact of war on management of type 1 diabetes mellitus among children in Gaza.

BACKGROUND: The war in Gaza has led to the destruction of health centres and medication shortages, impacting the most vulnerable groups, including children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). AIM: To determine how the conflict in Gaza has affected the care of children with T1D. METHODS: We collected data from 29 patients with T1D, aged ≤18 years, between June and July 2024 using an online questionnaire, and analysed the data using SPSS version 21. The data included their sociodemographic characteristics, medical history, diabetes-related data, the impact of war on T1D, and lifestyle changes

April 15th war and hemodialysis patients in Sudan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: On April 15th, 2023, intense clashes involving heavy weapons and airstrikes occurred between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, leading to the displacement of almost 8.1 million people. The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan has led to a worsening humanitarian catastrophe, posing serious challenges to the country's health-care system and even its collapse. Healthcare facilities have been severely affected, with barely one-third of hospitals operating in conflict zones. Hemodialysis patients are among the m

Continuity of Chronic Disease Care in Gaza: a Commentary on Health System Collapse and Humanitarian Imperatives.

The 2023 Gaza conflict precipitated a collapse of essential health services, exposing the extreme fragility of chronic disease care in humanitarian crises. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for more than 70% of deaths in Palestine, yet the management of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and renal failure has been critically disrupted by the destruction of infrastructure, blockade of medical supplies, and mass displacement. This work synthesizes recent peer-reviewed literature, WHO and UN reports, and field assessments from 2023 to 2025 examining the continuity of NCD car

Maximizing use of robot-arm no. 3 in daVinci-assisted thoracic surgery.

We have previously reported on the importance of appropriate robot-arm settings and replacement of instrument ports in robot-assisted thoracic surgery, because the thoracic cavity requires a large space to access all lesions in various areas of the thoracic cavity from the apex to the diaphragm and mediastinum and the chest wall. (1 - 3) Moreover, it can be difficult to manipulate the da Vinci Surgical System using only arms No. 1 and No. 2 depending on the tumor location. However, arm No. 3 is usually positioned on the same side as arm No. 2, and sometimes it is only used as an assisting-arm

Coming of age in war: Early life adversity, age at menarche, and mental health.

Armed conflict and forced migration (ACFM) represent a set of extreme environments that are increasingly common for children and adolescents to experience. Adolescence may constitute a sensitive period (puberty and psychoneurological maturation) through which ACFM adversity leaves a lasting mark. Adolescence has become a focal point for analysis and intervention as it relates to the effects of early life adversity on puberty, linear growth, and mental health. Research in public health and psychological science suggests early life adversity (ELA) may accelerate puberty, heightening risks for me
