A 12-year-old boy had problems with his speech due to a defect in the soft palate. This defect was caused by the surgical removal of a synovial sarcoma. Testing with a nasometer revealed hypernasality above normal values. Given the size and severity of the defect in the soft palate, the possibility of improving the speech with speech therapy was limited. At a centre for special dentistry an attempt was made with a prosthetic construction to improve the performance of the palate and, in that way, the speech. This construction consisted of a denture with an obturator attached to it. With it, an

We often hear that the wisest about vocal reeducation and more specifically about the problem of phonatory breathing is to focus only on the exhale, leaving the inhale automatic and involontary. This carefull approach is explained by the fact that the air-intake is a normally automatic and inconscious gesture in the speech which risks indeed to become unnatural if voluntarily controlled. A training that would preserve the natural nature of the gesture thanks to the practice of relaxation, permits however to avoid this difficulty and to lead to a better rehabilitation of the phonatory behaviour

Reading is vital to every aspect of modern life, exacerbated by reliance of the internet, email, and social media on the written medium. Developmental dyslexia (DD) characterizes a disorder in which the core deficit involves reading. Traditionally, DD is thought to be associated with a phonological impairment. However, recent evidence has begun to suggest that the reading impairment in some individuals is provoked by a visual processing deficit. In this paper, we present WISC-IV data from more than 300 Italian children with a diagnosis of DD to investigate the manifestation of phonological and

This study examined supraspan free recall in children with and without spelling impairment. A repeated free recall task involving overt rehearsal and three computer-based adaptive working memory tasks were administered to 54 eight-year-old children. Children without spelling impairments tended to recall more items than did those children with spelling deficits. Video analyses revealed that recall behaviour was similar in impaired and unimpaired children, indicating that both groups applied similar learning activities. Group differences in number of recalled items were attributed to differences

In the profession of speech-language pathology, it is commonly reported that children who stutter, as a group, are more likely to have phonological and language disorders than their non-stuttering peers. Some support for this belief comes from survey studies that have questioned speech-language pathologists about the children on their caseloads who stutter. Recently, one such study reported that 44% of children who stuttered had at least one additional communication disorder (Arndt & Healey, 2001). In the present investigation, speech-language pathologists (n = 127) who were treating children

The clavicle is an unusual long bone with many unique embryologic features. It is often involved in congenital and acquired disorders. Traumatic, inflammatory, neoplastic, metabolic and many other miscellaneous lesions may also affect the bone. Because of its ligamentous attachments and the presence of articulations at both ends, the clavicle can also be involved in arthritic diseases. This article illustrates the radiographic manifestations of many of the disorders of the clavicle that are commonly encountered in clinical practice.

Variation in lunate morphology can exist based on the absence (Type I) or presence (Type II) of medial facet on the distal articular surface of the lunate that contacts the proximal pole of the hamate. This additional lunatohamate articulation can affect load transmission across the radiocarpal joint and exert an influence on carpal kinematics. A Type II lunate is protective against carpal instability patterns associated with scaphoid nonunions and scapholunate dissociations. It may also play a role in the progression of carpal collapse that occurs in Kienböck disease. This review summarizes t

Dislocation of the temporomandibular joint results from trauma, articulation disorders and changes in the equilibrium of the masticatory muscles. Previous classifications were mostly oriented on the interrelationships between the anatomical positions of the dislocated articular surfaces, like luxation, subluxation and discuss luxation. Etiologically, a distinction is made between traumatic and non-traumatic dislocation. Dislocation of the temporomandibular joint is described as a complication of a number of neurological diseases. We report on a patient who suffered recurrent dislocations of th…

Advances in the treatment of Pompe disease have improved life expectancy and quality of life, but speech and oromotor function remain significantly affected. The purpose of this study was to expand on existing data and present new findings of speech acoustic and physiologic outcomes in Pompe disease. A retrospective analysis was carried out on results of speech, language and oromotor tests carried out in 14 children diagnosed with Pompe disease. The assessment battery included standardized tests of language, picture naming, maximum performance tests, and oromotor resistance tasks. Speech produ

The regimen for treatment of children with cleft lip and palate in Göteborg, Sweden, until 1996 included early soft palate repair at 6-8 months of age and delayed closure of the hard palate at about 8 years of age to improve maxillary growth. The aims of this report were to describe the treatment concept and to present speech data of 59 children treated by this method. The speech of 38 children with unilateral and 21 with bilateral cleft lip and palate was evaluated perceptually from standardised tape recordings of repeated sentences and spontaneous speech at five ages from 3 to 16 years of ag

Childhood apraxia of speech is a neurologic speech sound disorder in which children have difficulty constructing words and sounds due to poor motor planning and coordination of the articulators required for speech sound production. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy strongly suspected to have childhood apraxia of speech at 18 months of age who used multimodal communication to facilitate language development throughout his work with a speech language pathologist. In 18 months of an intensive structured program, he exhibited atypical rapid improvement, progressing from having no intelligible

Growing evidence suggests that speech intervention using visual biofeedback may benefit people for whom visual skills are stronger than auditory skills (for example, the hearing-impaired population), especially when the target articulation is hard to describe or see. Diagnostic ultrasound can be used to image the tongue and has recently become more compact and affordable leading to renewed interest in it as a practical, non-invasive visual biofeedback tool. In this study, we evaluate its effectiveness in treating children with persistent speech sound disorders that have been unresponsive to tr

PURPOSE: Children with specific language impairment (SLI) might present with speech sound disorder (SSD) and phonological awareness (PA) deficits which put them at risk of potential reading problems. This work aimed to organize an intervention program in Arabic for phonological training and to assess the effect of PA training versus the phonological therapy (PT) for children with SLI and SSD.
METHODS: The study was carried out on 60 children with comorbid SLI and SSD, aged 5-7 years. Children were equally divided into two groups; each group received language therapy combined with (PT or PA tr

The need for an interdisciplinary approach in the comprehensive management of individuals with cleft lip and palate is well recognized. This article provides an introduction to communication disorders in individuals with cleft lip and palate for members of cleft care teams. The speech pathologist is involved in identifying those infants who are at risk for communication disorders and also for initiating early intervention to prevent or mitigate communication disorders caused by the cleft. Even with early cleft repair, some children exhibit 'cleft palate speech' characterized by atypical conson
