The Asia Pacific Dental Federation hosted the Asia Pacific Dental Congress 2024 and convened public health experts to develop recommendations for Special Care Dentistry (SCD) for Asian countries. Many countries strive to promote oral health and ensure equal access to oral care for individuals with disabilities, but the implementation of SCD varies significantly. Leading the way in SCD education, research and well-organised services are countries such as Japan, Malaysia and Korea. Meanwhile, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand are introducing changes to their SCD educational and health sy…

Avian influenza remains a persistent global health threat, with Asia at its epicentre due to dense poultry production, live bird markets, and cross-species interfaces with ducks and swine. Several pathogenic subtypes continue to cause recurrent zoonotic spillovers with varying human case fatality, reinforcing the region's role as a pandemic hotspot. Surveillance highlights the main key ecological drivers: sustained viral circulation in live bird markets, subclinical infection in domestic ducks, wild birds serving as reservoirs, and multiple species with dual receptors that can act as mixing ve…

Lasco et al. present this article on homelessness as a rising public health crisis in Southeast Asia. Given that this problem is not getting adequate prioritisation and intervention, the authors hope that this paper will draw more attention from policy makers, and push for greater initiatives within the region to address the root causes of this issue.

Melioidosis is a disease endemic to India but often goes unrecognized, leading to considerable illness and death. We present the case of a 3 … entified Burkholderia pseudomallei, confirming the diagnosis. As malaria cases decline in Southeast Asia, emergency physicians should consider melioidosis in their differential diagnosis of acute febrile illnesses, especially in endemic areas. Early detection and prompt antibiotic treatment are vital for managing this often under-recognized disease wit …

Current malaria elimination targets must withstand a colossal challenge-resistance to the current gold standard antimalarial drug, namely artemisinin derivatives. If artemisinin resistance significantly expands to Africa or India, cases and malaria-related deaths are set to increase substantially. Spatial information on the changing levels of artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia is therefore critical for health organisations to prioritise malaria control measures, but available data on artemisinin resistance are sparse. We use a comprehensive database from the WorldWide Antimalarial Resist…

In 2011, a syndrome entitled ASIA (Autoimmune/inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants; Shoenfeld's syndrome) was first described. ASIA aimed to organize under a single umbrella, the existing evidence regarding certain environmental factors which possess immune stimulatory properties, in order to shed light on a common pathway of autoimmune pathogenesis. Such environmental immune stimulators, or adjuvants, include among others: aluminum salts as in vaccines, various medical implants, as well as various infectious agents. After the launch of the ASIA syndrome, the expansion and recognition of…

Despite considerable controversy concerning the taxonomy of species within the genus Spirometra, human sparganosis and spirometrosis mainly in Asia and Europe has long been confidently ascribed to Spirometra erinaceieuropaei. Recently, the mitochondrial genomes of purported "S. erinaceieuropaei", "Spirometra decipiens" and "Spirometra ranarum" from Asia have been determined. However, it has been pointed out that the morphological criteria used for identifying these species are unsuitable and thus these identifications are questionable. In the present study, therefore, Spirometra samples from A…

Purpose: To examine the spectrum of scleritis in four tertiary institutions across the Asia-Pacific. Methods: Clinical records from 354 patients were reviewed from centers in Australia, Singapore, and India, excluding those with insufficient data (n = 24). Results: Indian patients presented younger (41.5 ± 13.4 years) than Australians (50.8 ± 17.5) and Singaporeans (48.6 ± 15.9), with fewer women (49% vs 62%/57%). Diffuse disease was universally most common. Autoimmune and infectious disease proportions were similar in Australia (31%/10.3%) and Singapore (27.5%/8.3%) but reversed in India (8.3…

This article reviews the burden of epilepsy in Asia, the challenges faced by people with epilepsy, and the management of epilepsy. Comparison is made with other parts of the world. For this narrative review, data were collected using specified search criteria. Articles investigating the epidemiology of epilepsy, diagnosis, comorbidities and associated mortality, stigmatization, and treatment were included. Epilepsy is a global health care issue affecting up to 70 million people worldwide. Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries with limited resources. People…

While tremendous improvement has been made for the treatment of breast cancers, the treatment of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) still remains a challenge due to its aggressive characteristics and limited treatment options. Most of the studies on TNBC were conducted in Western population and TNBC is reported to be more frequent in the African women. This review encapsulates the studies conducted on TNBC patients in Asian population and elucidates the similarities and differences between these two regions. The current treatment of TNBC includes surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In ad…

While the past 2 decades have witnessed an increasing understanding of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) arising from East Asia, particularly Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China, knowledge of ALS throughout the whole of Asia remains limited. Asia represents >50% of the world population, making it host to the largest patient cohort of ALS. Furthermore, Asia represents a diverse population in terms of ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds. In this review, an overview is presented that covers what is currently known of ALS in Asia from basic epidemiology and genetic influences, through to di…

Coelophysoid dinosaurs represent the earliest major radiation of neotheropods. These small-to-medium-sized agile bipeds lived throughout much of Pangaea during the Late Triassic-arly Jurassic. Previously reported coelophysoid material from Asia (excluding the Gondwanan territory of India) is limited to two specimens that comprise only limb fragments. This paper describes a new genus and species of coelophysoid, Panguraptor lufengensis, from the Lower Jurassic Lufeng Formation of Yunnan Province, China. The new taxon is represented by a well-preserved skeleton, including the skull and lower jaw…

HIV epidemics in Asia have been initially driven through injecting drug use and the use of shared needles and syringes. Molecular epidemiological work has shown that where there is heroin trafficking and use, so too is there HIV. Given the often strict enforcement of national anti-narcotic laws, harm reduction responses to HIV infections driven by injecting drug use have been historically slow. As it became clear that preventing HIV meant embracing harm reduction, many countries in the region have adopted harm reduction as part of their national AIDS strategy and increasingly as part of their …

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) have become significant public health problems, with the emergence and re-emergence of arboviral diseases nearly worldwide. The most populated Southeast Asia region is particularly vulnerable. The arboviral diseases such as dengue (DEN), Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile virus (WNV), chikungunya fever (CHIK), hemorrhagic fevers such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic (CCHF) fever, Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV), etc. are on the rise and have spread unprecedentedly, causing considerable burden of disease. The emergence/re-emergence of these diseases is …

Strongyloidiasis is a soil-transmitted helmithiasis with worldwide distribution. Contrary to chronic form, hyperinfestation and life-threatening dissemination, first (invasive) stages of the disease are not well characterized. This paper describes two cases of acute strongyloidiasis in travelers returning from Southeast Asia and highlights the need to take strongyloidiasis into account also among acute travel-related illnesses.
