Nicotine and alcohol dependence in patients with comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

AIMS: Several studies have shown that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) represents a significant risk factor for the onset and development of an addiction. Thirty-five per cent of adult ADHD patients are known to be addicted to alcohol. Many ADHD patients also have an increased nicotine consumption, which typically, leads to an improvement of attention, ability to concentrate and control of impulses. There may be pathophysiological connections here. On the other hand, it can also be assumed that there is a high prevalence of addicted patients with undiagnosed ADHD. METHODS: Nine

Salivary cortisol levels and dental anxiety in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common developmental disorder. The present study tested the hypotheses that children with ADHD, particularly those exhibiting severe hyperactivity and impulsivity, have a different stress reaction (measured by salivary cortisol) during a dental recall visit and are more dentally anxious than children in a control group. Eighteen children with ADHD and a control group of 71 children, all 13 yr of age, underwent a clinical dental examination and completed the Corah Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS). Four saliva samples were gathered for analysis of

Evaluation of pharmacological treatment of impulsivity in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We used an assessment that involved competing reinforcer dimensions in a concurrent-schedules arrangement to examine the effects of stimulant medication on impulsivity (i.e., sensitivity of choices to reinforcer immediacy relative to rate, quality, and effort) with 4 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The assessments were administered in the context of a double-blind, placebo-controlled, counterbalanced reversal design. Reinforcer immediacy was the most influential dimension for 3 of the students and the second most influential dimension for 1 of the students across placeb

Tips for managing children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the dental setting.

It has been estimated that between 3% and 7% of children suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is probable, therefore, that these children will present in any dental office. ADHD is characterized by inattention, overactivity and impulsivity. Such symptoms can be quite severe and often present challenges in the dental setting. ADHD symptoms are often managed by medication; and it is important for the clinician to be familiar with these medications to determine when to schedule dental appointments. In dealing with ADHD children, adjunctive behavioral strategies are ofte

Atomoxetine: a review of its use in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

UNLABELLED: Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and nonstimulant that has shown greater efficacy than placebo in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. In two large, well controlled, 10-week trials in adults with ADHD, improvements in ADHD symptoms, as assessed by investigator- and patient-rated scores, were greater with oral atomoxetine (60, 90 or 120 mg/day) than with placebo. Mean reductions in the total ADHD symptom score on the investigator-rated Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) in atomoxetine versus placebo recipients were

EEG analysis of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid reading disabilities.

This study investigated electroencephalographic differences between two groups of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, combined type, with reading disabilities (ADHD + RD) or without (ADHD) and typical control participants. Twenty participants were included in each group. All participants were between the ages of 8 and 12 years, and groups were matched on age and gender. The electroencephalographic (EEG) was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition from 21 monopolar derivations, which were clustered into nine regions for analysis. The EEGs were Fourier-transformed to

The practical aspects of diagnosing and managing children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

AD/HD is a behaviorally defined disorder with specific behavioral criteria. The most recent definitions decrease heterogeneity by defining subtypes although the current treatments tend to be more generic. The main well-established treatments are stimulant medication and behavior modification, which are most effective when used together.

Executive function in children with Tourette syndrome and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) in children is associated with various neurobehavioral disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children with TS and ADHD show some difficulties with neuropsychological tasks, but we do not know if children with TS alone have neuropsychological deficits. To assess specific cognitive differences among children with TS and/or ADHD, we administered a battery of neuropsychological tests, including 10 tasks related to executive function (EF), to 10 children with TS-only, 48 with ADHD-only, and 32 with TS + ADHD. Children in all groups could not eff

Comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with conduct, depressive, anxiety, and other disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a heterogeneous disorder of unknown etiology. Little is known about the comorbidity of this disorder with disorders other than conduct. Therefore, the authors made a systematic search of the psychiatric and psychological literature for empirical studies dealing with the comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with other disorders. DATA COLLECTION: The search terms included hyperactivity, hyperkinesis, attention deficit disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cross-referenced with antisocial disorder (aggres

Platelet MAO in children with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity: a pilot study.

The authors examined platelet MAO activity in 8 hyperactive and 18 control children who were admitted to a clinical research center and placed on a low monoamine diet. After 5 days, their blood was analyzed; the hyperactive children were discharged on day 7, placed on d-amphetamine for 2 weeks, and readmitted for repeat blood analysis. The hyperactive children initially had significantly lower levels of platelet MAO than the controls. After the hyperactive children were treated with d-amphetamine for 2 weeks, their platelet MAO levels were comparable to those of the control children. The autho

Motor Circuit Anatomy in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder With or Without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

This study examined the morphology of frontal-parietal regions relevant to motor functions in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with or without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We also explored its associations with autism severity and motor skills, and the impact of comorbid ADHD on these associations. Participants included 126 school-age children: 30 had ASD only, 33 had ASD with ADHD, and 63 were typically developing. High resolution 3T MPRAGE images were acquired to examine the cortical morphology (gray matter volume, GMV, surface area, SA, and cortical thickness

Structural brain abnormalities in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are two distinct neurodevelopmental diseases, they share behavioural, neuropsychological and neurobiological characteristics. For the identification of endophenotypes across diagnostic categories, further investigations of phenotypic overlap between ADHD and autism at the behavioural, neurocognitive, and brain levels are needed. METHODS: We examined regional grey matter differences and similarities in children and adolescents with ASD and ADHD in comparison to healthy controls using structu

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in an anxiety disorders population.

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a life-long, chronic disorder, which has its onset in childhood and is associated with significant functional impairment. ADHD appears to be highly comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, however, literature is lacking concerning ADHD/anxiety comorbidity. To that end, we examined the prevalence of ADHD in an anxiety disorder sample. Consecutive patients referred to an anxiety disorders clinic completed a variety of anxiety disorder self-report measures as well as the Adult ADHD self-report scale and were clinically assessed using the

Sleep Disturbance and Hyperactivity Detected by Actigraphy in Rats with Allergic Rhinitis or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Actigraphy is an easy and noninvasive method used to monitor human ultradian cycles. However, to our knowledge, it has been not applied to experiments with rodents. Therefore, using actigraphy, we assessed the ultradian cycles and behavior of rats. Rats with or without allergic rhinitis wore an actigraphy device, and triaxial acceleration was recorded. The counts that represent physical activity were lower from 8:00 to 20:00 than those from 20:00 to 8:00 in control rats, suggesting that their sleep phase was from 8:00 to 20:00 and their awake phase from 20:00 to 8:00. The counts from 8:00 to 1

Association of premature ejaculation with adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: Relationship with digit ratio.

Increased intrauterine testosterone exposure may be a common etiological factor for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and premature ejaculation (PE). This study aimed to determine the frequency of PE in adult ADHD and its relationship with the ratio between the second digit (2D) and fourth digit (4D) (2D:4D), which is accepted as an indicator of fetal testosterone exposure. 24 ADHD patients and 38 healthy controls were included in the study. Patients were evaluated using the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) and Adult ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)/ADHD DSM (The Diagnostic and St
