Regulation of systemic metabolism by the autonomic nervous system consisting of afferent and efferent innervation.

Autonomic nerves, sympathetic and parasympathetic, innervate organs and modulate their functions. It has become evident that afferent and efferent signals of the autonomic nervous system play important roles in regulating systemic metabolism, thereby maintaining homeostasis at the whole-body level. Vagal afferent nerves receive signals, such as nutrients and hormones, from the peripheral organs/tissues including the gastrointestinal tract and adipose tissue then transmit these signals to the hypothalamus, thereby regulating feeding behavior. In addition to roles in controlling appetite, areas …

Autonomic function in panic disorder: cardiorespiratory and plasma catecholamine responsivity to multiple challenges of the autonomic nervous system.

Panic disorder has been widely hypothesized to be associated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. In this study, 24 patients with panic disorder and 26 healthy control subjects took part in a broad battery of autonomic function tests, each designed to stress the autonomic nervous system in a particular fashion. Testing consisted of postural challenge, isometric exercise, cold pressor, and Valsalva maneuver. Dependent measures included heart rate, vagal tone, blood pressure, respiratory frequency, end-tidal CO2 levels, and plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine levels. The testing p…

Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system in gastro-esophageal reflux disease: Consequences for the cardiovascular system.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) implicates autonomic dysregulation of the lower esophageal sphincter tone. Our goal is to investigate whether this dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) function observed in isolated GERD cases can affect other systems, such as cardiovascular regulation. METHODS: Twenty-five participants were included in the study, 11 patients with isolated GERD and 14 controls. All patients and 7 controls responded to a COMposite Autonomic Symptoms Score 31 (COMPASS 31) questionnaire and underwent functional explorations …

Influence of menstrual cycle on autonomic nervous system, muscular strength and mood states.

This study examined modulations of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, neuromuscular performance and psychological states during the menstrual cycle (MC) in naturally menstruating women. Fifteen healthy young females were tested during menstruation, estimated late follicular, and estimated mid-luteal phases. Each session included mood and motivation assessments, resting heart rate variability (HRV) analysis and a maximal voluntary isometric contraction test of the knee extensors. Our data revealed a significant decrease of the parasympathetic activity reflected by lower vagally derived HRV i…

Autonomic nervous system and mediating role of respiratory function in patients with ALS.

Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) exhibit altered patterns of respiratory rate and heart rhythm that are directly related to autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. This study aimed to analyze the role of the ANS in respiratory function, cognition, functionality, and antioxidant capacity in patients with ALS through a predictive model that assesses the mediating activity of respiration. This quantitative, observational, analytical, and cross-sectional clinical study was conducted using a sample of 75 patients diagnosed with ALS. ANS activity, respiratory function, cognition, f…

Antiseizure medication effects on the autonomic nervous system in pediatric patients with epilepsy.

Patients with epilepsy (PWE) taking antiseizure medications (ASMs) exhibit altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) parameters. ANS signals may monitor ASM applications and effectiveness non-invasively. Due to limited research, we reviewed the effects of ASMs on the pediatric ANS. We followed PRISMA guidelines and searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for publications until 12/2024. These studies investigated the impact of ASMs on ANS, including heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), temperature, and sweat. We used Covidence software for screening processes and data extraction. Aft…

Chronobiological aspects of autonomic nervous system function in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review.

Disruption of biological rhythms appears to play a role in Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to summarize findings, focusing on measurement tools and outcomes, from studies assessing dysautonomia in PD from a chronobiological perspective. We searched Pubmed and Embase in English and included 76 articles following PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-four-hour Blood Pressure Measurement (24 h ABPM) was the most popular method for assessing chronobiological changes of autonomic function in PD. Reverse blood pressure (BP) dipping, i.e. increase in nighttime systolic BP, was a common finding in PD regardles

Neuromodulation of Cardiac Ischemic Pain: Role of the Autonomic Nervous System and Vasopressin.

Cardiac pain is an index of cardiac ischemia that helps the detection of cardiac hypoxia and adjustment of activity in the sufferer. Drivers … derstood. Thus far, most attention has been focused on inappropriate regulation of the heart by the autonomic nervous system, autacoids, and cardiovascular hormones. Herein, we summarize evidence showing that the autonomic nervous system regulates cardiac pain sensation in cooperation with vasopressin (AVP). AVP is an essential analgesic compound and it exerts its antinoc …

Desensitizing the autonomic nervous system to mitigate anti-GD2 monoclonal antibody side effects.

BACKGROUND: Anti-GD2 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have shown to improve the overall survival of patients with high-risk neuroblastoma (HR-NB). Serious adverse events (AEs), including pain, within hours of antibody infusion, have limited the development of these therapies. In this study, we provide evidence of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) activation as the mechanism to explain the main side effects of anti-GD2 mAbs. METHODS: Through confocal microscopy and computational super-resolution microscopy experiments we explored GD2 expression in postnatal nerves of infants. In patients we assessed …

Evaluation of Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction in Childhood Obesity and Prader-Willi Syndrome.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) may play a role in the distribution of body fat and the development of obesity and its complications. Features of individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) impacted by PWS molecular genetic classes suggest alterations in ANS function; however, these have been rarely studied and presented with conflicting results. The aim of this study was to investigate if the ANS function is altered in PWS. In this case-control study, we assessed ANS function in 20 subjects with PWS (6 males/14 females; median age 10.5 years) and 27 body mass index (BMI) z-score-matched c…
