Do processing time and storage of sputum influence quantitative bacteriology in bronchiectasis?

This study aimed to establish whether the bacterial density of spontaneous sputum is affected by the time and mode of sample storage. Ten patients with bronchiectasis collected all sputum expectorated over 45 min. The samples were aliquoted and processed at 25 degrees C for qualitative and quantitative bacteriology at 1, 2, 4 and 6 h from expectoration. Further aliquots were stored at 25 degrees C, 4 degrees C and -20 degrees C for 24 and 48 h prior to processing. The species present was identified and median (interquartile range) sputum log(10) bacterial density (c.f.u. ml(-1)) calculated. Al

Bacteriology of sinusitis in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients: implications for management.

The bacteriology of sinusitis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients has been only sporadically reported. In this study, we report the results of cultures taken from 12 HIV patients with refractory chronic sinusitis who underwent surgery. Nine of the 12 patients had positive cultures with 16 isolates and 5 patients having multiple isolates. Five of the 12 patients grew out atypical or opportunistic infections not responsive to standard medical therapy, including 3 patients with cytomegalovirus, 1 with Aspergillus fumigatus, and 1 with Mycobacterium kansasii. These results sugg

Applications of high-performance liquid chromatography in bacteriology. I. Determination of metabolites.

The chemotaxonomic approach to the identification of pathogenic bacteria for clinical purposes is surveyed. Primary interest is focused on the applications of HPLC to the determination of metabolic products from anaerobic bacteria. The use of HPLC is attractive as different classes of short-chain acids can be determined in a single analysis. Chromatographic conditions are extensively described, emphasizing the effects of changing variables on the HPLC profiles of analytes. The application of labelling procedures to bacterial metabolites can markedly increase the sensitivity of the analysis of

Predisposing factors, bacteriology and antibiotic therapy in 35 cases of septic bursitis.

In a retrospective study the etiology was verified in 35/52 patients with suspected septic prepatellar or olecranon bursitis. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen and 86% of them were penicillinase-producing. Other strains were streptococci. Mean age was 47 (18-83) years and males predominated (91%). Predisposing factors were seen in most cases. Preceding trauma was found in 27 and/or associated diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus) in 11 patients. Hyperglycemia was found in 38% of the patients. Treatment with antimicrobial agents, mostly penicillins, and bursal drainage were success

Bacteriology of maxillary sinusitis in relation to quality of the retained secretion.

The bacteriological findings in 200 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis are reported. It is concluded that the sampling technique--by antral aspiration--is highly significant in the evaluation of the bacteriological background of sinusitis, whereas the anerobic transport of the sample seems to be of less importance. By aspiration the purulent secretion can be properly separated from the non-purulent secretion. Pneumococci, H. influenzae and anaerobic bacteria can be isolated in about 90% of the patients with true sinus empyema, while sterile conditions are rare.

Bacteriology of the stomach immediately following vagotomy: the growth of Candida albicans.

With the rise in pH of gastric juice that results from vagotomy, there is a high incidence of intraluminal gastric Candida albicans overgrowth in the immediate postoperative period. There appears to be no clear cut correlation between gastric Candida overgrowth and the post-vagotomy diarrhea syndrome. Mycostatin has not had a significant affect upon this diarrhea.

Relationship between bacteriological findings in the second and fourth weeks postpartum and uterine infection in dairy cows considering bacteriological results.

The uterine lumen in early postpartum dairy cows is contaminated with different bacteria. The most relevant uterine pathogens are Escherichia coli and Trueperella pyogenes. Prevalence of α-hemolytic streptococci and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) is also high; however, these pathogens are considered opportunistic. The overall objective of this study was to investigate effects of the intrauterine presence of E. coli, T. pyogenes, α-hemolytic streptococci, or CNS at 10±1 d in milk (DIM) on the type of bacteria 2 wk later and their influence on uterine infections and subsequent reproducti

Bacteriology of Aspiration Pneumonia: The Lung Microbiome and the Changing Microbial Etiology.

Aspiration pneumonia refers to the process of alveolar inflammation induced by the inhalation of oropharyngeal secretions into the lower respiratory tract. Predisposing factors comprise swallowing dysfunction, impaired cough reflex, and degenerative neurological diseases. Accumulating evidence projects a fading contribution of anaerobic bacteria in aspiration pneumonia at the expense of Gram-negative bacilli, with Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, becoming the predominant organisms recovered from respiratory specimens. Aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions c

Bacteriology of the Middle Meatus in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with and without Polyposis.

There are only limited data in the literature, and none specifically from the Middle East, on the pathogenic bacteria in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) as opposed to healthy nasal cavities and their association with disease severity. The present study was conducted in the department of head and neck surgery of a tertiary medical center. Middle meatal swabs were taken preoperatively from patients with CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) (n = 60), CRS without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP) (n = 50), and control patients with septal deviation (n = 26) or no nasal abnormalities (n = 27). Contamination of banked femoral head allograft: incidence, bacteriology and donor follow up.

BACKGROUND: Allograft donations are not uncommonly found to be contaminated. The issue of contaminated donations from live donors at the time of surgery, and the significance of this to the patient in terms of subsequent sepsis of the arthroplasty, were examined. METHODS: The donations of femoral heads to the Queensland Bone Bank over a 9-year period were reviewed, and the incidence and bacteriology of contamination were detailed. Clinical outcomes were determined for donors who had positive cultures at the time of retrieval and they were compared with those of culture-negative donors. RESUL

Bacteriology of neonatal septicaemia in a rural referral hospital in south India.

Out of 640 suspected cases of neonatal septicaemia studied, bacteraemia was detected in 255 (40 per cent) of the infants. Gram negative organisms were predominant (56 per cent) with Pseudomonas, Citrobacter, and Klebsiella as the commonest pathogens. Among the Gram positive organisms both Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were equally prevalent. Staphylococci were mainly responsible for early onset infections, whereas Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas were the main organisms in late onset infections. Group B streptococcal infection was not encountered in this part of th
