BackgroundLegacy-oriented interventions (LOI) are increasingly integrated into pediatric palliative care (PPC) to support children and their families during serious illness and bereavement. However, its impact on family grief and psychosocial outcomes remains insufficiently explored.ObjectivesThis systematic review evaluated the effects of LOI on children and families receiving PPC.MethodsA systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to February 28, 2025. Eligible studies included children and families in PPC settings. Outcomes of interest encompassed relational an…

OBJECTIVES: Up to 10% of bereaved individuals can develop prolonged grief disorder. Several risk factors for prolonged grief symptom severity in family members have been identified, but there is a lack of knowledge regarding the multivariable effects between family members coping with loss and patient-related factors for prolonged grief symptom severity during bereavement. The aim was to identify risk factors for prolonged grief symptom severity in family members 1 year after patient death in relation to (1) the family member and the patient during ongoing palliative care and (2) the family me…

UNLABELLED: Traumatic loss is associated with high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and appears to inhibit the natural process of grieving, meaning that patients who develop PTSD after loss trauma are also at risk of experiencing enduring grief. Here we present how to treat PTSD arising from traumatic bereavement with cognitive therapy (CT-PTSD; Ehlers et al., 2005). The paper describes the core components of CT-PTSD for bereavement trauma with illustrative examples, and clarifies how the therapy differs from treating PTSD associated with trauma where there is no loss of a signif…

PURPOSE: The study aims to understand how enacted stigma influences bereavement coping at the style (scale) level and the specific pathways at the strategy (item) level.
METHODS: The longitudinal data of 755 children orphaned by parental Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in rural China were used. Grief processing and deliberate grief avoidance were measured at wave 1 (baseline) and wave 2 (one-year follow-up) to reflect bereavement coping in the contexts of being with family members, being with friends, being with community members, and being alone. Enacted stigma that measured at wa…

Stillbirth or neonatal death is one of the most traumatic and distressing life experiences with negative psychosocial effects. Perinatal grief is natural and understandable, and, if not recognized and well supported, may lead to long-term harmful effects. Harm may also be caused to the other surviving siblings, families, and next generation. This can be helped by effective bereavement care. Bereavement care is an area of enormous needs, relatively untraveled road. Though the loss cannot be undone, but a negative impact can be minimized by compassionate supportive care. This chapter will focus …

Background: Sibling bereavement profoundly affects family systems, yet little is known about bereaved siblings from immigrant communities where family structures have been destabilised by migration prior to the loss. The Ethiopian-Israeli community constitutes a distinct minority group of immigrants in Israel, characterised by unique cultural heritage and by skin colour that distinguishes its members from the general population. This visible difference subjects the community to racism and discrimination in ways that parallel the experiences of Black communities worldwide. Objective: This study'…

BACKGROUND: While experiencing grief following the death of a close relative is a universal experience, the grieving process and the perceived value of bereavement support vary between individuals. While research suggests that most grief reactions are considered normal and diminish over time, some individuals experience prolonged or complicated grief. Knowledge regarding which factors are associated with grief and how bereavement support is perceived by bereaved individuals is limited.
AIM: This study aimed to explore factors associated with grief reactions after the death of a close relative…

Ensuring patient and family members' preparedness for dying is a key focus for palliative care. This article draws on the retrospective accounts of bereaved adult family members' experiences of anticipation and preparedness following a death in palliative or residential aged care. Participants completed in-depth interviews (n = 36). A constructivist grounded theory approach guided data collection and analysis, through which the complexities of engaging in preparedness whilst navigating questions of how to care well emerged. We propose the concept of anticipation fatigue as a means by which to

BACKGROUND: Family members' (FMs) perceptions play a crucial role in understanding distressing symptoms in terminally ill patients. However, research on FM-reported physical distress and the corresponding care settings and caregiver burdens remain sparse across the spectrum of heart diseases.
METHODS: This retrospective study utilized a nationwide mortality follow-up survey completed by bereaved FMs of patients with heart failure, ischemic heart disease (IHD), or other heart diseases. FMs retrospectively rated distress from 11 patient symptoms experienced 1 week prior to death using the Memor

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization approximates that around 56.8 million individuals require palliative care annually, with 25.7 million of them being in the final stage of life. Ensuring high-quality care, particularly towards the end of life, can significantly enhance the quality of dying and death (QODD) for terminally ill patients. This, in turn, may alleviate grief among their loved ones following their passing. This descriptive study seeks to explore the correlation between the quality of end-of-life care (EOLC), QODD, and the experience of grief among bereaved family caregivers.

Most children confronted with the death of a loved one do not experience persisting psychological problems. However, for some, acute grief reactions develop into prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and other mental health problems. Research findings suggest that bereavement outcomes in children are associated with negative cognitions and avoidant coping and with different parenting behaviours. However, knowledge about factors influencing grief in children is still limited and few studies have examined the relative impact of psychological (individual-level) variables and systemic (family-level) vari…

CONTEXT: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is highly endorsed, but HRQOL studies scarcely investigate the following: ICU family members; modifiable end-of-life (EOL) ICU-care factors; conjoint associations with prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression; and long-term bereavement outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: Exploratorily investigate associations of PGD-PTSD-depressive-symptom states (resilient, subthreshold-depression dominant, PGD dominant, and PGD-PTSD-depression comorbid) and quality of EOL ICU care with families' HRQOL 6-24 months post loss.

Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for children in the United States; however, limited data exists on caregivers' needs and evidence-based bereavement interventions are lacking. This is a cross-sectional study of primary caregivers of children who died from cancer. Participants completed five surveys assessing well-being and an optional semi-structured, in-depth qualitative interview. Caregiver's greatest unmet needs were finding meaning in the death, personal wellness, and social activities. Bereaved caregivers with greater unmet needs reported poorer quality of life in the …

INTRODUCTION: Drug-related deaths (DRDs) are a major public health challenge. Losing a child to a DRD can be a very stressful life event, which places parents at risk of mental and physical health problems. However, traumatic experiences like losing a child to DRD can paradoxically also lead to positive psychological changes. A mixed-method approach was used to understand the complexity of the phenomenon of post-traumatic growth experienced by parents following a DRD.
METHOD: By combining data from a survey (n = 89) and interviews (n = 14), we explored positive growth experiences among Norweg

In Italy, in the very first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic there was a dramatic rise in mortality. However, families were forbidden because of lockdown regulations to be with their loved ones at their deathbeds or to hold funerals. This qualitative study examined bereavement experiences among family members, how they processed their grief, and how they used social networks in particular by uploading photographs during the working-through of bereavement. The sample was composed of 40 individuals aged 23-63 (80% women) from different Italian cities severely impacted by the virus, including a sub…

Although Motor Neurone Disease (MND) caregivers are most challenged physically and psychologically, there is a paucity of population-based research to investigate the impact of bereavement, unmet needs, range of supports, and their helpfulness as perceived by bereaved MND caregivers. This study aimed to validate the Swedish version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 tool (PG-13) by examining its psychometric properties, including factor structure, discriminant and concurrent validity. The PG-13 was assessed in a sample of Swedish parents who had lost a child to cancer 1-5 years previously. The sample included 225 parents (133 mothers and 92 fathers) with a mean age of 46.02 years (SD = 8.15) and 16.0% met the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). A principal component analysis was performed, and the results supported a one-factor structure of the PG-13. The PG-13 wa

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, consent from relatives is obligatory for post mortal donation. This study explored the perspectives of relatives regarding the request for consent for donation in cases without donor registration.
METHODS: A content analysis of narratives of 24 bereaved relatives (14 in-depth interviews and one letter) of unregistered, eligible, brain-dead donors was performed.
RESULTS: Relatives of unregistered, brain-dead patients usually refuse consent for donation, even if they harbour pro-donation attitudes themselves, or knew that the deceased favoured organ donation. Ha
