INTRODUCTION: Critical biomedical reading is essential in the training of health professionals.
OBJECTIVES: Narrate a decade of experience in the redesign and implementation of an introductory course on research methodology for health residents and fellows at a University Hospital.
METHODOLOGY: The objective of the course is to acquire skills for critical reading and tools to plan research projects. The educational model evolved from face-to-face meetings and theoretical classes (2015-2018) to synchronous online (2019-2021) and finally to asynchronous online (2022-2024), incorporating new te

Long-standing frameworks for the ethics of biomedical research are being challenged on multiple fronts by seismic shifts in the way science is practiced. One such shift, which is the focus of "Filling the Network Gap in Research Ethics: Analyzing Ethical Issues at Scale in Big Team Science," by Susan Wolf and colleagues in this issue of the Hastings Center Report, is the evolution of biomedical research toward very large scientific teams. The authors seek to fill a gap in research ethics frameworks that arises with the conduct of big team science, at the mesolevel of research networks. However…

Global malaria control is entering a period of profound uncertainty, with earlier gains now stalling or reversing amid a rapidly deepening shortfall in programme and research funding. At the same time, parasite and vector resistance, changing transmission patterns driven by climate and urbanisation, and growing conflict and displacement are reshaping malaria epidemiology and undermining the effectiveness of core tools. In this context, there is an urgent need to reconsider how malaria research is prioritised, funded and conducted. Drawing on a diverse group of stakeholders, this Perspective ar

Science is a self-correcting process, and scientific research aims to improve adequacy, accuracy, and utility. However, improving scientific research is a demanding task, especially when currently some key principles of science are challenged and renegotiated. Key challenges in the current environment include the increasing loss of trust in scientists; the production of most of the published scientific literature in countries without full democracy and/or in countries without fundamental freedoms, e.g., freedom of the press; limited public availability and transparency as most research is fund

The reported inability to replicate research findings from the published literature precipitated extensive efforts to identify and correct perceived deficiencies in the execution and reporting of biomedical research. Despite these efforts, quantification of the magnitude of irreproducible research or the effectiveness of associated remediation initiatives, across diverse biomedical disciplines, has made little progress over the last decade. The idea that science is self-correcting has been further challenged in recent years by the proliferation of unverified or fraudulent scientific content ge…

INTRODUCTION: Despite representing an essential workforce, it is unclear how global policy efforts target early-career dementia researchers (ECDRs). Thus, this study aimed to provide an overview of policies through which ECDRs are considered and supported by dementia plans and organizations.
METHODS: G20 member states were evaluated for their national dementia plan alongside policies of leading dementia organizations. Data targeting support for ECDRs were extracted and subject to content analysis using inductive coding. Findings were categorized and narratively synthesized.
RESULTS: Only Chi

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this initiative was to develop a ranked list of hydrocephalus research priorities as determined by the hydrocephalus patient community in conjunction with the healthcare and scientific community.
METHODS: Using the validated methodology published by the James Lind Alliance (JLA), the Hydrocephalus Association (HA) administered two surveys and hosted a final prioritization workshop. Survey One solicited open-ended responses from the community. From these responses, a long list of priority statements was developed. This list was then consolidated into a short list of resea

Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) encompass a diverse group of genetic diseases characterized by loss of muscle functionality. Despite extensive efforts to develop therapies, no curative treatment exists for any of the NMDs. For multiple disorders, however, therapeutic strategies are currently being tested in clinical settings, and the first successful treatments have now entered clinical practice (e.g. spinraza for spinal muscular atrophy). Successful clinical translation depends on the quality and translatability of preclinical findings and on the predictive value of the experimental models use

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised persons, especially those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Pneumocystis colonization is described increasingly in a wide range of immunocompromised and immunocompetent populations and associations between Pneumocystis colonization and significant pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have emerged. This mini-review summarizes recent advances in our clinical understanding of Pneumocystis and PcP, describes ongoing areas of clinical and trans

The pediatric rheumatic diseases are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases, posing a number of challenges for the use of traditional clinical and translational research methods. Innovative comparative effectiveness approaches are needed to efficiently study treatment strategies and disease outcomes. The Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) developed the consensus treatment plan (CTP) approach as a comparative effectiveness tool for research in pediatric rheumatology. CTPs are treatment strategies, developed by consensus methods among CARRA members, intended to reduce

Human microbiome research is expanding globally, yet remains dominated by samples, institutions, and leadership from the Global North. This imbalance undermines scientific validity, as microbiomes are shaped by socio-ecological context and temporal dynamics, and risks producing diagnostics and therapeutics that are not applicable across diverse populations. In this comment, we engage with van Daele et al.'s framework of co-laboration and argue for ethical, interdisciplinary, and locally led research models that center community participation, context-rich metadata, and equitable authorship. We

Public domain human genomic resources are infrastructure: tools researchers use to ask basic biological questions whose answers are then translated into products and care. Translational science now asks them to support an expanding set of tasks, including clinical variant interpretation for diverse populations, pharmacogenomic prescribing, polygenic risk prediction, and the training of clinical artificial intelligence. The corpus of public domain genomes, due in large part to upstream recruitment choices, is not fit for these purposes, and the gap between discovery and translation is widening.

Global health engagement increasingly occurs in the context of war and violent conflict. Many health-related decisions are made which should be guided by evidence. Health research is needed to provide evidence, yet conducting research in conflict settings raises multiple ethical issues. However, the ethical issues involved in conducting research during war and violent conflict have received insufficient attention. The literature suggests that these ethical issues, while similar to those of research conducted in humanitarian crises, are also distinct. This article provides a review of the ethic

Epistemic injustice refers to wronging or mistreating individuals in terms of their capacity as knowers, based on prejudices or negative attitudes. Excluding people with dementia from research is a form of epistemic injustice. In this article, we discuss epistemic injustice associated with data collection processes and the participation of people with dementia in scientific research. The challenges of participation that we discuss pertain to the role of gatekeepers and ethical research perspectives. The arguments presented are based on previous research, experiences from our current project, a

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in the collection, storage and reuse of biological samples for future research. Storage and future use of biological samples raise ethical concerns and questions about approaches that safeguard the interests of participants. The situation is further complicated in Africa where there is a general lack of governing ethical frameworks that could guide the research community on appropriate approaches for sample storage and use. Furthermore, there is limited empirical data to guide development of such frameworks. A qualitative study to address this gap was cond

Prevailing ethical oversight of data science health research concentrates on privacy, consent, bias, and fairness. These concerns are necessary but insufficient, because each presupposes an answer to a prior question that is seldom asked directly. That is, "do the targets, proxies, labels, classifications, ontologies, and population descriptors on which a current study rests still truthfully represent the persons, populations, and phenomena they are taken to describe, at the point of use rather than the point of collection?" In this viewpoint, we name that question representational veracity (R
