Identification of risk factors for rabies exposure and access to post-exposure prophylaxis in Chad.

Rabies remains a global public health problem, with Africa as one of the most affected continents. Endemic transmission in the unvaccinated domestic dog population of developing countries leads to many exposures with subsequent death in humans due to lack of access to existing effective prevention tools. The presented study identifies factors of exposure and rabies risk in Chad on the household and health facility levels and highlights the challenges of access to Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Data on bite exposure and prevention was collected through a representative cross-sectional survey

[Development of novel bispecific antibody therapy for multiple myeloma].

Over the past decade, new therapeutic modalities have markedly improved clinical outcomes for patients with multiple myeloma. Recently, immunotherapy using both bispecific antibodies (BsAb) and chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T cells) has induced further anti-myeloma responses. Different agents must be combined to overcome the heterogeneity of myeloma cell clones, and new modalities for the treatment of refractory myeloma must also be developed to strengthen therapeutic effects. We have developed a novel BiTE (bispecific T-cell engager)-based modality, referred to as bridging-BiTE (B-Bi

Tularemia following a squirrel bite in Southern Germany: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. Human cases in Germany are emerging and are usually associated with hare or tick exposure. Transmission via squirrel bites has only been reported once before in Germany. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 23-year-old woman who developed tularemia 11 days after being bitten by an injured red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in southern Germany. Initial symptoms included headache, chills and fatigue, followed by painful right axillary lymphadenopathy without fever. Empirical ciprofloxacin (500 mg twice daily) was initiated

Malaria entomological inoculation rates in western Venezuela.

Over 61,000 anophelines collected between January 1988 and October 1989 in three villages in western Venezuela were assayed by ELISA for Plasmodium vivax circumsporozoite (CS) protein. The six specimens confirmed positive belonged to three species: Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) nuneztovari Gabaldón, 1940, A. albitarsis Arribalzaga, 1878 sensu lato and A. oswaldoi (Peryassu, 1922). The estimated CS protein rate for all species combined was 0.01% (95% confidence limits 0.004-0.02%). This CS protein rate and the mean number of bites received by the collectors indicated a sporozoite inoculation rate o

Exposure to tick-borne encephalitis virus among nature management workers in the Netherlands.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) has only recently been detected in the Netherlands. With still few autochthonous tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) patients, human exposure to TBEV is expected to be very low among the general population. We aimed to assess the exposure to TBEV among persons with an occupationally high risk of tick bites in the Netherlands. In our cross-sectional serological survey, employees and volunteers of nature management organizations provided a single blood sample and completed an online questionnaire in 2017. The sera were screened in the anti-TBEV IgG Enzyme-Linked Im

Complete recovery from undertreated Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome following aggressive thiamine treatment.

The microbiology of animal bite wound infections in humans is often polymicrobial, with a broad mixture of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Bacteria recovered from infected bite wounds are most often reflective of the oral flora of the biting animal, which can also be influenced by the microbiome of their ingested prey and other foods. Bacteria may also originate from the victim's own skin or the physical environment at the time of injury. Our review has focused on bite wound infections in humans from dogs, cats, and a variety of other animals such as monkeys, bears, pigs, ferrets, horses

[Matching bite marks using modeling wax plates].

Bite marks are rarely seen in forensic medical examinations. In most cases one can easily differentiate whether a bite mark is of human or animal origin due to the arched shape and crushed character of human bite marks. From a forensic point of view it is more interesting whether a dental imprint has been caused by an adult or a child, because children are often abused for a defensive statement. Two cases of bite injuries in children are presented. In the first case, a two-month-old infant was presented by pediatricians. The second case deals with a one-year-old boy who had allegedly been bitt

Rabies in Saudi Arabia: a need for epidemiological data.

Rabies is endemic in animals in the Arabian Peninsula. Although Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Peninsula, little has been published about the rabies situation in the country. A total of 11,069 animal bites to humans were reported during 2007-2009, and 40 animals suspected of rabies were examined for rabies infection from 2005 through 2010. Results suggest that animal-related injuries in Saudi Arabia remain a public health problem, with feral dogs accounting for the majority of bites to humans and for the majority of animals found to be rabid. Over the last 10 years, no confirmed hu

Pathogens of the human central nervous system-the major viral pathogens.

Numerous pathogen infections in the human central nervous system can initiate potentially fatal neurological inflammation, including encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis and myelitis. Several bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoan parasite pathogens can initiate such neurological disorders. Pathogens of the central nervous system can achieve this either by their original active infections, or by reactivated infections after a period of latency. The original infections can be transmitted between humans by aerosols, respiratory droplets, ingestion, or physical contact. Some pathogens ca

Time Series and Pattern of Dog Bites and Rabies in the Ashanti Region, Ghana, 2009-2019: A Call for Inter-Sectoral Collaboration in the Fight Against Rabies.

Dog-mediated human rabies is a vaccine-preventable neglected zoonotic disease, causing thousands of deaths every year across Africa and Asia. Information to generate the appropriate attention and action to avert human rabies is lacking due to disaggregation of available data. This study sought to understand the burden of dog-mediated rabies transmission and response patterns in Ghana's Ashanti Region, and analyzed dog-bite surveillance, rabies laboratory investigations, and hospital visitation data from 2009 to 2019. A total of 442 bite incidents were recorded, with most occurring in the Kumas

Rhesus monkey model for Leishmania major transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi sandfly bites.

Leishmaniasis research needs a near-human model for investigations of natural infection processes, immunological responses and evaluation of treatments. Therefore, we developed a reproducible system using Leishmania major Yakimoff & Schokhor (Trypanosomatidae: Kinetoplastida), the cause of Old World zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL), transmitted to rhesus monkeys Macaca mulatta (Zimmerman) (Primates: Cercopithecidae) by sandfly bites of experimentally infected Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Eight monkeys of presumed Indian origin (Leishmania naive) were exposed to

In silico clinical trials of BiTE expression by oncolytic viruses reveal the impact of patient heterogeneity on dosage protocol.

Immunotherapies have become a transformative therapeutic strategy for many cancer types in recent years. Bispecific T-cell engagers (BiTEs) are one promising immunotherapy that enhances cellular antitumour immunity by redirecting T cells towards cancer cells. Recent evidence suggests that BiTE efficacy can be augmented by encoding BiTEs in oncolytic measles virus vectors (MV-BiTE). Infection of cancer cells with MV-BiTE causes the local production of BiTEs and has shown safety and efficacy in murine tumour models. However, whether the observed efficacy of this treatment will translate to a het

Status of Onchocerca volvulus (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) Transmission and Effect of Climatic Variables on the Vector Population Dynamics After Two Decades of Ivermectin-based Preventive Chemotherapy in the Mbam Valley (Centre Region, Cameroon).

Entomological indicators of onchocerciasis transmission and the effect of climatic variables on the vector population dynamics were investigated in two first-line villages after more than two decades of mass drug administration with ivermectin. Female blackflies were collected in two villages (Bayomen and Biatsota) using human landing method for a period of 12 months. Blackflies were dissected and entomological indices were computed. Monthly temperature, precipitation, and humidity were collected and the Spearman correlation rank test was used to assess the relationship between biting rates an

Air of the Dog: Impending Respiratory Failure After a Dog Bite.

Animal and human bites represent a significant health issue worldwide. However, penetrating neck trauma secondary to animal bites is a rare presentation. We present the case of a 32-year-old female with neck pain and difficulty breathing after suffering a dog bite to the neck. Bedside ultrasound and subsequent computed tomography (CT) showed findings consistent with subcutaneous emphysema. Due to rapidly progressing neck swelling and stridor, she required advanced airway management followed by emergent exploratory surgery. We present a case report on impending respiratory failure after a dog b

Rabies: relevance, prevention, and management in travel medicine.

Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease, transmitted only in mammals. Terrestrial rabies, predominantly transmitted by dogs, is the most important rabies cycle threatening humans. The causative neurotropic virus is a negative-stranded RNA virus of the family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus. This genus contains several rabies-related viruses. All variants are known or suspected to cause rabieslike diseases. Transmission occurs by the virus entering through the skin or the mucosa after bites, scratches, or preexisting injuries contaminated by the saliva of an infected mammal. Only 51 human rabies cas

Human antibody reaction against recombinant salivary proteins of Phlebotomus orientalis in Eastern Africa.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus orientalis is a vector of Leishmania donovani, the causative agent of life threatening visceral leishmaniasis spread in Eastern Africa. During blood-feeding, sand fly females salivate into the skin of the host. Sand fly saliva contains a large variety of proteins, some of which elicit specific antibody responses in the bitten hosts. To evaluate the exposure to sand fly bites in human populations from disease endemic areas, we tested the antibody reactions of volunteers' sera against recombinant P. orientalis salivary antigens. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Recombinan
