Antimicrobial peptides are natural immune effector molecules that protect the host from pathogenic microorganisms and play crucial roles in the innate immune system. Herein, the functions of theromacin from the razor clam Sinonovacula constricta (ScTM) were identified. In order to investigate cadmium contents in foods sold in Japan, cadmium levels in 40 seafood samples and 30 chocolate samples were measured by means of atomic absorption spectrometry and ICP-OES. In the present work, the impact of speciation on the bioavailability of cadmium in sediments was investigated. Bioaccumulation of cadmium adsorbed on various (hydr)oxide minerals, i.e. ferric hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide and manganese dioxide, by bivalve Meretrix meretrix Linnaeus, was measured using a suspending system. In July 5, 2002 fishermen working in harvesting sea urchin (Loxechinus albus) in the Patagonia Chilean fjords were intoxicated by consumption of filter-feeder bivalve Aulacomya ater. After the ingestion of 7-9 ribbed mussel, two fishermen died 3-4 h after shellfish consumption. The forensic examination in both victims did not show pathological abnormalities with the exception of the lungs conditions, crackling to the touch, pulmonary congestion and edema. We have demonstrated that carpet shell clam (Ruditapes decussatus) hemocytes produce nitric oxide (NO) in response to zymosan or bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). This NO production was partially inhibited by the NO synthase inhibitor, N-omega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NAME).
