Study on chest injury and bulletproof vest protection under the combined action of blast wave and fragments.

Using a simulation based method, this paper analysis the damage effect of blast wave and fragments on human body and the protective effect of bulletproof vest. The results show that compared with the single blast shock wave, the chest injury is more serious under the combined action of blast shock wave and fragments. The peak stress of sternum, costal cartilage and rib increases by 334.34%, 170.23% and 39.72%, respectively. The peak stress on the side of the lung decreases by 3.95%, with little change. The peak stress on the front and back of the lung increases by 83.58% and 409.09% respective

Raman spectroscopic diagnosis of blast-induced traumatic brain injury in rats combined with machine learning.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a kind of nervous system disease, which results in a major health and economic problem to society. However, the rapid and label-free detection method with high sensitivity is still in great demand for the diagnosis of bTBI, especially for mild bTBI. In this paper, we report a new strategy for bTBI diagnosis through hippocampus and hypothalamus tissues based on Raman spectroscopy. The spectral characteristics of hippocampus and hypothalamus tissues of experimental bTBI in rats have been investigated for mild and moderate degrees at 3 h, 6 h, 24 h,

Decreasing lower extremity junctional and perineal injury from explosive blast with a pelvic protection system.

OBJECTIVE: Lower extremity junctional injuries due to explosive blasts are among the most lethal sustained on the battlefield. To help reduce the effects of junctional and perineal trauma from this injury mechanism, a tiered Pelvic Protection System (PPS) was fielded during the war in Afghanistan. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with known PPS status who sustained traumatic above knee amputations, with and without perineal injuries, were identified from an operative amputation registry in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, spanning a 12-month period. RESULTS: In Group 1 patients with above knee amp

The sensitivity of chest X-ray (CXR) for the detection of significant thoracic injury in children exposed to blast.

INTRODUCTION: Thoracic trauma is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children exposed to blast and early recognition of these injuries is vital. While numerous studies have investigated the sensitivity of chest X-ray (CXR) for the detection of chest injury in blunt trauma, none have evaluated its performance in paediatric blast injury. METHODS: CXR and Computed Tomography (CT) thorax findings were compared for 105 children who were injured by blast and presented to the UK Role 3 Hospital, Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, during the recent conflict in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013.

Behavioral and Myelin-Related Abnormalities after Blast-Induced Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Mice.

In civilian and military settings, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common consequence of impacts to the head, sudden blows to the body, and exposure to high-energy atmospheric shockwaves from blast. In some cases, mTBI from blast exposure results in long-term emotional and cognitive deficits and an elevated risk for certain neuropsychiatric diseases. Here, we tested the effects of mTBI on various forms of auditory-cued fear learning and other measures of cognition in male C57BL/6J mice after single or repeated blast exposure (blast TBI; bTBI). bTBI produced an abnormality in the tempor

Original experimental rat model of blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosing blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is difficult due to minimal imaging findings. This study aimed to establish a rat model of behavioral abnormality caused by blast-induced mTBI and detect new findings for therapeutic intervention. METHODS: We used a bench-top blast wave generator with the blast wave exiting through a 20-mm I.D. nozzle aimed at the focused target. The blast wave was directed at the head of male Wistar rats under general anesthesia positioned prone 2.5 cm below the nozzle. Peak shock wave pressure was 646.2 ± 70.3 kPa. RESULTS: After blast

Objective and Subjective Auditory Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury and Blast Exposure in Service Members and Veterans.

Service members and veterans (SMVs) with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or blast-related injury often report difficulties understanding speech in complex environments that are not captured by clinical tests of auditory function. Little is currently known about the relative contribution of other auditory, cognitive, and symptomological factors to these communication challenges. This study evaluated the influence of these factors on subjective and objective measures of hearing difficulties in SMVs with and without a history of TBI or blast exposure. Analyses included 212 U.S. SMVs who

Sensory sensitivity and posttraumatic stress disorder in blast exposed veterans with mild traumatic brain injury.

The purpose of this study was to examine the unique contribution of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on sensory sensitivity following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in an Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) Veteran sample. We hypothesized that the effect of PTSD on noise and light sensitivity following mTBI would be largely driven by PTSD-related hyperarousal symptoms. We compared the relationships between PTSD, noise sensitivity, and light sensitivity of 49 OEF/OIF Veterans with mTBI to that of 23 OEF/OIF Veterans without mTBI. Results suggest tha

Differential Responses of the HPA Axis to Mild Blast Traumatic Brain Injury in Male and Female Mice.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects 10 million people worldwide, annually. TBI is linked to increased risk of psychiatric disorders. TBI, induced by explosive devices, has a unique phenotype. Over one-third of people exposed to blast-induced TBI (bTBI) have prolonged neuroendocrine deficits, shown by anterior pituitary dysfunction. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is linked to increased risk for psychiatric disorders. Not only is there limited information on how the HPA axis responds to mild bTBI (mbTBI), sex differences are understudied. We examined central and

Diffusion tensor imaging of mild to moderate blast-related traumatic brain injury and its sequelae.

To evaluate the effects of mild to moderate blast-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) on the microstructure of brain white matter (WM) and neurobehavioral outcomes, we studied 37 veterans and service members (mean age 31.5 years, SD = 7.2; post-injury interval 871.5 days; SD = 343.1), whose report of acute neurological status was consistent with sustaining mild to moderate TBI due to blast while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Fifteen veterans without a history of TBI or exposure to blast (mean age 31.4 years, SD = 5.4) served as a comparison group, including seven subjects with extracranial

The pathophysiology of primary blast injury and its implications for treatment. Part II: The auditory structures and abdomen.

The authors have previously considered the mechanisms by which primary blast injury affects the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and what deductions may be made about management of the resulting injuries. This article considers the somatic effects of primary blast on abdominal and auditory structures. These injuries are usually of less immediate concern but require accurate management in order to avoid late mortality and morbidity and to return the casualty to full function. Recognition of likely injury patterns is vital to the instigation of correct management. The tympanic membrane, fo

Isolated pulmonary blast injury in rats--a new model using the extracorporeal shock-wave lithotriptor.

Blast injury to the lungs is one of the most overwhelming threats to survival following exposure to powerful explosions. The pathophysiology of blast injuries differs significantly from other forms of trauma. Using the extracorporeal shock-wave lithotriptor, originally designed for the noninvasive treatment of nephrolithiasis, we were able to produce isolated, typical pulmonary blast effects in rats. The immediate mortality was associated with bilateral pneumothorax and hemothorax. A nonlethal dose of shock waves caused intra-alveolar and intrabronchial hemorrhages and an immediate 2- to 3-fol…
