PURPOSE: To identify possible abnormalities in regional cerebral glucose metabolism in patients with benign essential blepharospasm or Meige syndrome using positron emission tomography.

The efficacy of the blink reflex is maintained by adaptive control mechanisms. We describe a 39-year-old woman with the rare complication of blepharospasm-like symptoms appearing contralateral to an eyelid weakened by facial nerve palsy. The hyperexcitable blink reflex may be a maladaptive consequence of adaptive systems but was not accompanied by an expected increase in main sequence slope. We report the case of a 5-year-old boy with progressive bilateral blepharospasm and blepharophimosis secondary to Schwartz-Jampel syndrome type 1A. Molecular findings confirmed two novel heterozygous mutations in the HSPG2 gene. After the patient did not respond to a single injection of botulinum toxin, he underwent levator resection combined with orbicularis myectomy of bilateral upper and lower eyelids, with satisfactory aesthetic and functional outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Blepharospasm is a type of focal dystonia and categorized into primary and secondary forms, based on whether or not a cause can be established. Secondary blepharospasm is uncommon and can be associated with underlying brain lesions. Photophobia is a prominent complaint in blepharospasm patients. We are reporting a case of secondary blepharospasm with photophobia in a patient who had underlying midbrain tuberculoma and thalamic infarcts. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to report 4 patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and On-period blepharospasm (BS).
METHODS: We analyzed patients with PD and motor fluctuations who developed BS in several different centers in Latin America.
RESULTS: Four patients had BS while in the ON periods.
CONCLUSIONS: Blepharospasm in the On period in patients with PD is extremely uncommon, and our series is the only one to describe such association.

A few genetic variants are implicated in the development of blepharospasm (BSP). The precise role of the rs6265 on the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene on BSP remains controversial.
