We should address visual disabilities in children instead of only the childhood blindness. Diseases related to nutritional, communicable diseases should be addressed through strategies for achieving 'Millennium Development Goals'. We report a patient who presented with acute painful monocular visual loss reminiscent of idiopathic optic neuritis. After treatment with corticosteroids was commenced, an anterior clinoid mucocele causing compressive optic neuropathy was demonstrated on imaging studies. The diagnosis was proven histopathologically following excision of the lesion via craniotomy. Although very rare as a cause of optic neuropathy, anterior clinoid mucocele should be excluded by adequately imaging the optic canal, as visual prognosis is poor if surgical decompression is not performed in a timely fashion.

The genetic locus for incomplete congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB2) has been identified as the CACNA1f gene, encoding the alpha 1F calcium channel subunit, a member of the L-type family of calcium channels. In clinical trials, blinding is usually employed to prevent bias that may be introduced due to the knowledge of the identity of the treatment codes. This bias could alter the conclusion of statistical inference on the treatment effect. The purpose of this article is to propose a method for analysing clinical data with breached blindness. The example regarding the study of the effectiveness of an appetite suppressant in weight loss in obese woman as described in Brownell and Stunkard (Am. J. Psychiatry 1982; 139:1487-1489) is used to illustrate the application of the proposed methods.

A 30-year-old paranoid schizophrenic man suffered a psychotic episode while flying on an airplane, locked himself in the bathroom, detached the temples of his sunglasses, and stabbed them deeply into both medial orbits. He then secured one temple into the door hinge and rammed the back of his neck repeatedly against it. The injuries caused no light perception from optic nerve trauma and a Brown-Séquard hemitransection of the spinal cord.

BACKGROUND: It is believed that ivermectin (a microfilaricide) could prevent blindness due to onchocerciasis. However, when given to everyone in communities where onchocerciasis is common, the effects of ivermectin on lesions affecting the eye are uncertain and data on whether the drug prevents visual loss is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to assess the effectiveness of ivermectin in preventing visual acuity and visual field loss in onchocercal eye disease. The secondary aim is to assess the effects of ivermectin on lesions affecting the eye in onchocerciasis.

A 51-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) of another institution with sudden onset of blindness in the left eye. PURPOSE: To examine the causes and outcome of subnormal vision starting in childhood in Uganda, to aid in planning for its avoidance and for rehabilitation.
METHODS: All those seen having subnormal vision with onset from birth to 15 years (total 1135) (schools 1983-97; community 1988-97) were included in the study. Clinical examination was performed and a World Health Organisation (WHO) form completed, with analysis by its computer program. Main outcome measures were visual acuity, signs of eye pathology, outcome of treatment and refraction and low vision assessment.

Changes in the world order and in technology during the last half-century have revolutionized approaches to blindness prevention and sight restoration.
