Transient coagulation abnormalities after incompatible blood transfusion.

This report describes an unusual hemolytic transfusion reaction. A group O donor was inadvertently transfused with 100 ml of group A red cells during the course of plasmapheresis. Granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenemia and low levels of factors V, VIII, and IX developed immediately after the infusion. The levels of the cellular elements and coagulation proteins returned to normal in less than an hour; too rapid for a de novo synthesis after consumption of coagulation proteins. We postulate that activation of the kinin system was responsible for the phenomena rather than intrava

Unusual response to ABO incompatible blood transfusion.

Three units of group A blood were inadvertently administered to a group O recipient during surgery without evidence of hemoglobinemia, hemoglobinuria, hypotension, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute renal tubular necrosis, or other signs and symptoms of transfusion reaction. The recipient had normal concentrations of IgG, IgA, and IgM as well as complement (C3) prior to transfusion and anti-A agglutinins titered to 64 (titer of 128 by the antiglobulin technic). Seventeen hours following the transfusion, 28 per cent of the circulating red blood cells were group A (equivalent to 475 m

Clinical assessment of preventing febrile nonhemolytic transfusion reaction by leukocyte-depleted blood transfusion.

The objective was designed to assess the clinical efficiency of preventing febrile nonhemolytic transfusion reactions (FNHTR) with transfusi … ransfusion. It is concluded that leukocyte-depleted RBC and platelet concentrates reduces FNH TR in blood transfusion.

Seroprevalence of transfusion-transmissible infections among blood donors at National Blood Transfusion Service, Eritrea: a seven-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is associated with several risks particularly exposure to blood transfusion-transmissible infections (TTI), including: Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Syphilis, among others. The threat posed by these blood-borne pathogens is disproportionately high in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This fact underscores the need for continuous surveillance of TTIs in the region. Therefore, the study objectives were to evaluate the prevalence of TTIs and donor characteristics associated with positivity for TTIs at the National Bl…

Blood transfusion practices and blood-banking services in a Kenyan hospital.

OBJECTIVES: To identify ways to improve the operation of blood-screening programs and to decrease the inappropriate use of blood by evaluating blood-transfusion practices and blood-banking services in a Kenyan hospital. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. SETTING: The study was conducted in a rural district hospital in western Kenya between September 1990 and July 1991. METHODS: We collected data on all transfusion requests (blood donation, grouping, HIV screening) and blood recipients (age, sex, diagnosis, and for a 3-month period on the pediatric, maternity, and female wards, admission hemoglobin

Prehospital Blood Transfusion Coalition: framework for EMS Blood Program Coordinator responsibilities.

BACKGROUND: The success of prehospital blood transfusion programs depends not only on clinical guidelines and provider competencies but also on robust program coordination. METHODS: This guidance defines the scope and responsibilities of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Blood Program Coordinators and Program Managers, in alignment with the AABB (American Association of Blood and Biotherapies) Standards for Emergency Prehospital and Scheduled Out-of-Hospital Transfusions, as well as the Prehospital Blood Transfusion Coalition (PHBTC) clinical practice guideline for civilian EMS. Coordinators o…

Effects of red blood cell concentrate transfusion on blood tacrolimus concentration.

Background Elevated blood concentration of tacrolimus is frequently observed following transfusion of red blood cell concentrate in patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Objective The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the effects of transfusion of red blood cell concentrate on the blood concentration of tacrolimus. Setting Chiba University Hospital in Japan. Method Fifty-two patients (aged 0-65 years) receiving both tacrolimus and transfusion after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation were enrolled. The ratio of measurement after transfus
