Secular trends in skinfold thicknesses and body fat distribution were examined in the adult Inuit of Igloolik, N.W.T. through surveys conducted in 1969/70, 1979/80 and 1989/93. Findings were compared with the nGanasan population of Volochanka (Taimir peninsula, Siberia), who were examined in 1992/3. The skinfold readings of the Inuit have increased over the two decades of observation. Vertical banded gastroplasty has replaced jejunoileal bypass in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. Although this procedure carries a low incidence of early postoperative complications there is little information on either longer term follow up or the impact on nutritional status. 265 hypogonadic Sardinian males, ascertained through military records of 600,000 conscripts approximately over the last thirty-seven years, were screened for their sex chromatin phenotype by buccal mucosa smears and for their karyotypes from peripheral blood lymphocyte cultures. 158 (59.4%) showed a XXY karyotype without mosaicism, 5 XX and 1 XXYY karyotypes. Seven sex chromatin negative males had Kallmann's syndrome. This report summarizes the genetic and clinical data recorded in this population sample as opposed to those reported from fertility clinics.

1138 first clinical episodes of coronary heart disease (CHD) in 17 944 middle-aged male office workers in the Civil Service are reported. Among primates, age at first molar emergence is correlated with a variety of life history traits. Age at first molar emergence can therefore be used to broadly infer the life histories of fossil primate species. We investigated factors causing mercury (Hg) concentrations in northern pike to exceed the consumption advisory level (>500 ng/g) in some inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park. We present the case of a male infant born at 37 weeks gestation with multiple congenital anomalies, including hydrops fetalis, facial and visceral abnormalities, short ribs, and short limbs without polydactyly. We believe that this represents a further case of the Beemer-Langer syndrome, a relatively recently described form of lethal osteochondrodysplasia with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. This case also showed some less frequently described anomalies, including arachnoid cysts of the brain and short intestines.

This study was undertaken to develop a physiological and nutritional profile of 13 female figure skaters, aged 9-17 years. Compared with previous published data, skaters in this study were younger and smaller with a higher percent body fat.
