The etiologic role of genetic and environmental factors on disordered eating was examined in a sample of 15- to 17-year-old female-female, male-male, and opposite-sex twin pairs. Also assessed was whether a single factor is underlying 3 facets (body dissatisfaction, drive for thinness, bulimia) of disordered eating, including the possible importance of sex differences. Univariate model-fitting analyses indicated that genetic factors are more important for girls and environment more important for boys for body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness. A multivariate common factor analysis indicat…

Perceived experiences of violence, trauma, body dissatisfaction, and body shaming emerge as interconnected factors contributing to suicide attempts among adolescents. There is a critical need to improve the understanding and prediction of suicide attempts in this vulnerable population. In this study, a primarily qualitative design was employed, supported by descriptive quantitative elements, such as code frequencies and word clouds, to explore in-depth narrative interviews of adolescents who attempted suicide. Thematic content analysis was utilized to analyze the transcripts of these narrative…

AIM: The current study compared the postoperative quality of life (QOL) between the esophagogastrostomy method (PGEG) and double tract method (PGDT) after proximal gastrectomy using the Postgastretomy Syndrome Assessment Scale (PGSAS)-45.
METHODS: Among the 2364 patients who received the PGSAS-45 questionnaire, 300 PGEG and 172 PGDT cases responded. We found that ED risk is elevated by higher body dissatisfaction and reduced by being in perimenopause or postmenopause as compared to premenopause. Resilience (ie, intuitive eating) was elevated by positive perceptions of aging and diminished by higher levels of body dissatisfaction, greater bothersomeness of me …

Body image disturbance (BID) in anorexia nervosa (AN) is poorly understood and the individual contribution of perceptual, cognitive, and aff … lyses revealed significant correlations between body size overestimation and drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction in the AN group, with body dissatisfaction being the most robust. Results suggest that both deficits in tactile and visual perception and affective factors play a role in BID for young women with AN.

Body dissatisfaction (BD) is central to the development, maintenance and relapse of anorexia nervosa (AN). BD has been conceptualized as a multi-dimensional construct incorporating behaviours, cognitions and affect, yet little is known about the impact of weight and disordered eating on these aspects. 56 'below DSM-IV weight criteria for AN' (<BMI 17.5 kg/m(2)) and 44 'above DSM-IV weight criteria for AN' (>BMI 17.5 kg/m(2)) individuals currently receiving treatment for an eating disorder, and 60 non-eating disordered females completed the Body Checking Scale, Body Image Avoidance Questionnair…

In advanced painful hemophilic arthropathy of the knee (APHAK) and advanced painful osteoarthritis of the knee (APOAK) the last resort is total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, some patients with APOAK are not satisfied despite a good clinical result. A review the literature on APHAK and APOAK was performed to know their rates of dissatisfaction and their main causes. In APOAK the rate of dissatisfaction ranges between 3 and 28.3%. Causes of dissatisfaction in APOAK are high preoperative body mass index, lack of fulfillment of patient expectations, a low 1-year WOMAC, preoperative pain at res

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery usually results in substantial weight loss and a reduction in medical comorbidities. Many patients, as a consequence of the weight loss, subsequently evidence loose, redundant skin.
OBJECTIVES: This investigation seeks to examine the prevalence of body contouring surgery (BCS) by patients approximately 4 to 5 years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Demographics, change in BMI, and psychosocial variables were also used to predict body dissatisfaction, desire for BCS, and patients who reported obtaining BCS.
SETTING: The clinical sites involved in the Longit…

BACKGROUND: Body image variables such as body size perception (BSP) and body size dissatisfaction (BSD) can influence health-related behaviors. However, few studies have investigated these body image variables in adolescent girls participating in a physical activity intervention. Therefore, the study objectives were to examine the 1) associations between health-related behaviors (physical activity, screen-time, eating habits and sleep duration) and BSP and BSD among girls participating in FitSpirit, a physical activity intervention for girls; and 2) influence of weight control practices on the

Exposure to thin-ideal media can contribute to increased body dissatisfaction in adolescent girls. Understanding the factors that may prevent or exacerbate the negative effects of media exposure on body dissatisfaction is important to facilitate prevention of these problems. This study evaluated the effects of exposure to thin-ideal media images on body image in three instructional set experimental conditions: appearance comparison, peer norms, and control. An important aim was to examine baseline levels of media literacy as a protective factor and trait thin-ideal internalization and trait up…

Body image dissatisfaction is a common issue among patients with cancer and is associated with difficulty coping, anxiety, and depression. Patients with tumors involving the head and neck are at increased risk of body image dissatisfaction due to the visible disfigurement that can occur from their illness and its treatment. Patients with primary central nervous system (CNS) malignancies often face similar tumor-related and treatment-related effects, yet there is limited research conducted in this population. Our aim was to perform a systematic review of the literature on body image in patients

This study reports on outcomes from a behavioral obesity treatment program, evaluating if treatment-related changes in body image and psychological well-being are predictors of weight change during treatment and after follow-up. Participants were 142 overweight/obese women (BMI=30.2+/-3.7kg/m(2); age=38.3+/-5.8 years) participants in a behavioral treatment program consisting of a 4-month treatment period and a 12-month follow-up. Psychosocial variables improved during treatment and these changes were correlated with 4-month weight reduction. Short-term changes in body size dissatisfaction (p=.

This study compared patients with bulimia nervosa (BN), obese patients with binge eating disorder (BED), and nonobese patients with BED. One hundred sixty-two adult women consecutively evaluated for outpatient clinical trials who met DSM-IV criteria for BN, purging type (N = 46) or for BED (N = 79 obese and N = 37 nonobese) were compared using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI). The three groups differed significantly on two (drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction) of the three eating-related scales and on all five of the general personality scales of the EDI. This study aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes based on patient-reported outcome measures and to analyze factors influencing patient dissatisfaction at 1 year after curved periacetabular osteotomy (CPO). This retrospective review involved 98 hips of 98 consecutive patients with symptomatic acetabular dysplasia who underwent CPO from March 2016 to June 2020. The clinical outcomes were evaluated based on the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Hip Disease Evaluation Questionnaire, the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey and the Harris Hip Score.
