Rare andunusual presentation of multiple oesophageal foreign bodies in infant.

Children and aged are the most commonly affected persons with foreign body in oesophagus. The case of oesophageal foreign body reported here is unique as the male infant remained undiagnosed for more than 12 days and presented without any history of swallowing of foreign body and or dysphagia. The other unusual features of this case were gradual increase in the number of oesophageal foreign bodies.

Reflective Foreign Bodies Mimicking Fistulae of the Hard Palate in the Paediatric Population.

Palatal foreign bodies remain relatively rare, consequently, delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis can occur leading to unnecessary anxiety and invasive investigations. We report three children with a reflective disc from inside a confetti balloon masquerading as a fistula of the hard palate. Awareness of this foreign body phenomenon enabled timely diagnosis in subsequent patients; hence the need to highlight such cases to the global cleft community. Crucially, while the foreign body remains in the oral cavity, there is an ongoing risk of airway aspiration which could be life threatening. Remov…

The role of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis in reflex responses of the adrenal medulla of the dog.

1. The release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla, in response to carotid body hypoxia, may outlast the stimulus by more than 30 min. 2. After denervation of the adrenal gland the immediate release of catecholamines in response to carotid hypoxia is abolished, but the prolonged release remains. 3. The prolonged release of catecholamines is abolished by cycloheximide. 4. Both corticotrophin in vivo and hydrocortisone in the isolated perfused adrenal gland release adrenomedullary catecholamines. 5. It is concluded that a component of the response of the adrenal medulla to carotid body hy

ATPases of the cat carotid body and of the neighbouring ganglia.

The average ATPase activity in homogenates of the cat carotid body is found to be 20 nmol Pi liberated per minute per mg fresh tissue weight at 25 degrees C. ATPase activity in the nodose ganglion and the superior cervical ganglion is found in the same range. Most of the activity remains in the supernatant after removal of the mitochondria by centrifugation. The activity is inhibited by ouabain only marginally (ganglia) or not at all (carotid body). In all these organs up to 80% of the activity is seen in the absence of Mg2+ and the presence of increasing concentrations of Ca2+.

Deleterious effects of whole-body vibration on the spine: A review of in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro models.

Occupational exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with the development of musculoskeletal, neurological, and other ailments. Low back pain and other spine disorders are prevalent among those exposed to whole-body vibration in occupational and military settings. Although standards for limiting exposure to whole-body vibration have been in place for decades, there is a lack of understanding of whole-body vibration-associated risks among safety and healthcare professionals. Consequently, disorders associated with whole-body vibration exposure remain prevalent in the workforce and milita

Increase in vertebral body height after vertebroplasty.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: During clinical work, we have seen increases in vertebral body height associated with vertebroplasty, but our literature search revealed no reports as to how often and to what degree those increases occur. The purpose of this study was to document the frequency and degree of changes in vertebral body height after vertebroplasty. METHODS: The heights of 85 vertebral bodies in 37 patients were measured before and after vertebroplasty. In addition, one adjacent vertebral body was measured in each patient as a control. Twenty-six patients had compression fractures in the t

Oscillatory dynamics within fronto-insular-parietal networks integrate thermosensory signals into body ownership.

Cutaneous thermosensory signals are linked to survival and homeostatic regulation, yet their relationship with higher order cognitive functions remains poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests that skin temperature is associated with body ownership-the sense that a body and its parts belong to oneself-but the oscillatory basis of this relationship in healthy individuals is unknown. We combined a multisensory illusion paradigm with thermal imaging and electroencephalography to investigate the oscillatory correlates of skin-temperature changes during experimentally induced changes in body o

Epigenetic and metabolic signatures in systemic lupus erythematous: The impact of excess body weight on adipose tissue DNA methylation profile.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The interaction between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), excess body weight, and epigenetic variation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the association between excess body weight and genome-wide DNA methylation profiles in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from patients with SLE. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 36 premenopausal women with SLE were classified as normal weight (NW,n = 16) or excess body weight (EBW, n = 20). Anthropometric, metabolic, dietary, and physical activity data were collected. Genome-wide DNA methylation in SAT was assesse

Evidence for divergent cortical organisation in Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Dementia is a defining feature of Lewy body disease: its timing and onset distinguish different clinical diagnoses, and its effect on quality of life is profound. However, it remains unclear whether processes leading to cognitive and motor symptoms in Lewy body disease differ. To clarify this, we use in-vivo neuroimaging to assess spatial gradients of inter-regional differences in structural and functional connectivity in 108 people across the Lewy body disease spectrum (46 Parkinson's with normal cognition (PD-NC), 62 Lewy body dementia (LBD)) and 23 controls. We show divergent structural gra

Global Optimization of Large Molecular Systems Using Rigid-Body Chain Stochastic Surface Walking.

The global potential energy surface (PES) search of large molecular systems remains a significant challenge in chemistry due to "the curse of dimensionality". To address this, here we develop a rigid-body chain method in the framework of a stochastic surface walking (SSW) global optimization method, termed rigid-body chain SSW (RC-SSW). Based on the angle-axis representation for a single rigid body, our algorithm realizes the cooperative motion of connected rigid bodies and achieves the coupling between rigid-body chain movement and lattice variation in the generalized coordinate. By exploitin

A synaptic amplifier of hunger for regaining body weight in the hypothalamus.

Restricting caloric intake effectively reduces body weight, but most dieters fail long-term adherence to caloric deficit and eventually regain lost weight. Hypothalamic circuits that control hunger drive critically determine body weight; yet, how weight loss sculpts these circuits to motivate food consumption until lost weight is regained remains unclear. Here, we probe the contribution of synaptic plasticity in discrete excitatory afferents on hunger-promoting AgRP neurons. We reveal a crucial role for activity-dependent, remarkably long-lasting amplification of synaptic activity originating

Residual foreign body in the neck after trauma results in the delayed rupture of the common carotid and internal jugular vein: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma and foreign body residue occurring in different settings are common in the neck. Some small injuries go unrecognized, and vascular injuries caused by the sharp penetrating trauma of a foreign body are very dangerous. Without early diagnosis and treatment, foreign body residue remains a major cause of mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: A six-cm piece of wooden chopstick was not initially detected in the neck of a 24-year-old Chinese man presenting with a slight bleeding wound after a brawl accident. Three days later, the patient had an expanding neck hematoma and shortness of b

Fly pupae and puparia as potential contaminants of forensic entomology samples from sites of body discovery.

Fly pupae and puparia may contaminate forensic entomology samples at death scenes if they have originated not from human remains but from animal carcasses or other decomposing organic material. These contaminants may erroneously lengthen post-mortem interval estimates if no pupae or puparia are genuinely associated with the body. Three forensic entomology case studies are presented, in which contamination either occurred or was suspected. In the first case, blow fly puparia collected near the body were detected as contaminants because the species was inactive both when the body was found and w

Extracellular or ghost Pick bodies and their lack of tau immunoreactivity: a histological, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic study.

Histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic evidence of an extracellular, or ghost Pick body has been found in the granular cell layer and, rarely, in the pyramidal cell layer of the hippocampus of an autopsy case of Pick's disease. The ghost Pick body appeared as a blurred, weak argyrophilic mass in the neuropil, and it was composed of accumulated fibrillary structures, 13 nm in diameter, intermingled with glial filament bundles. These ghost Pick bodies did not react with anti-tau and anti-ubiquitin antibodies, but did react weakly with anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein ant

Contribution of skin thermal sensitivities of large body areas to sweating response.

The thermal sensitivity of different parts of the body was investigated by heating large areas of the body surface while the mean skin temperature calculated from Hardy and DuBois ' formula (1938) was always kept constant. The right arm sweating responses recorded under a local thermal clamp were related to changes in segmental skin temperatures of the different parts of the body. The results show that: 1) the various local peripheral signals are projected into integrating structures in the central nervous system; 2) the thermal sensitivity is greater for the head-and-trunk area in comparison

Quantitative paleoparasitology applied to archaeological sediments.

Three techniques to extract parasite remains from archaeological sediments were tested. The aim was to improve the sensibility of recommended paleoparasitological techniques applied in archaeological remains. Sediment collected from the pelvic girdle of a human body found in Cabo Vírgenes, Santa Cruz, Argentina, associated to a Spanish settlement founded in 1584 known as Nombre de Jesús, was used to search for parasites. Sediment close to the skull was used as control. The techniques recommended by Jones, Reinhard, and Dittmar and Teejen were used and compared with the modified technique prese

Virtual Reality Mood Induction and Body Image Disturbance in Adolescents With Eating Disorders: An Experimental Study.

Eating disorders (EDs) are severe psychiatric conditions characterized by body image disturbance, yet the role of affective states in the maintenance of body image symptoms among adolescents remains poorly understood. Virtual reality-based mood induction procedures (VR-MIPs) offer a controlled method for examining how experimentally induced affect influences body image outcomes. This within-subjects experimental study tested the hypotheses that a positive-MIP would improve, and negative MIP would worsen, body image disturbance indices in female adolescents with EDs. Forty-two female adolescent

Infrared thermography cannot be used to approximate core body temperature in wild primates.

Understanding the physiological processes that underpin primate performance is key if we are to assess how a primate might respond when navigating new and changing environments. Given the connection between a mammal's ability to thermoregulate and the changing demands of its thermal environment, increasing attention is being devoted to the study of thermoregulatory processes as a means to assess primate performance. Infrared thermography can be used to record the body surface temperatures of free-ranging animals. However, some uncertainty remains as to how these measurements can be used to app

AMPA Receptor-Dependent Glutamatergic Signaling is Present in the Carotid Chemoreceptor.

Exposure to both sustained and intermittent hypoxia for as little as a day produces sustained augmentation of carotid chemoreceptor sensitivity; however, the molecular basis for this chemoreflex plasticity remains uncertain. We previously reported that NMDA receptor-dependent glutamatergic signaling in rat carotid body played a role in altered hypoxic sensitivity after exposure to cyclic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). Here we found that mRNAs of multiple AMPA and Kainate glutamate receptors were expressed in rat carotid body. The AMPA receptor subunit GluR1 showed intense immunoreactivity in the
