OBJECTIVE: To described the allele and haplotype frequencies of human leukocyte antigen genes at the -A, -B loci and human platelet antigen genes for human platelet antigen systems 1 to 9, 11 and 15 in blood.
METHODS: We included 867 healthy unrelated volunteer donors who donated platelets between January 2011 and December 2014. Microarray genotyping was performed using a BeadChip microarray. Medium resolution typing of the human leukocyte antigen at loci A and B was carried out using sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe hybridization. We used multivariate analysis and our human leukocyte

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Whipple's disease is a systemic, chronic, relapsing disorder caused by a combination of environmental (Tropheryma whipplei) and unknown host factors. Because it is a rare disease, the association between HLA type and Whipple's disease has been studied in only small numbers of patients; these studies have led to conflicting results. We aimed to investigate whether disease phenotype and outcome are associated with HLA type in 122 patients with Whipple's disease.
METHODS: Genomic DNA was collected from 103 German, 11 Italian, and 8 Austrian patients with Whipple's disease, alo

The family of the Medici has dominated the city of Florence from the 15th to the 18th century. With the fortune accumulated by their bank, their trade and industry, they made Florence the European capital of the Renaissance and one of the world centres of culture. However, the Medici got a lot of health problems that have often influenced the destiny of the city and its citizens. During the 15th century, the Medici of Cafaggiolo branch of the family were the uncrowned masters of the Florence republic. All got major "rheumatic" complaints, who often interfered with a normal professional activit

A method for producing concentrated fibrinogen, an essential component of fibrin glue, from individually stored, single-donor units of human plasma is reported. The plasma is screened for hepatitis B antigen and HIV-1 virus to reduce the risk of transmission of hepatitis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This material is routinely stocked in some operating rooms. It is thus readily available when requested by a surgeon for use in combination with topical bovine thrombin to produce fibrin glue. From April 1985 to March 1987 this material was used by surgeons from eight different su

This paper is a review of 132 cases of ossicular reconstruction utilizing prefabricated homografts by clinical staff members of the UCLA Division of Head and Neck Surgery (specializing in ear surgery) in their private practice over the past decade. Another 20 cases completed over the past 2 1/2 years in the UCLA teaching programme are also reviewed. Although ossicular homografts have been used for some time in middle ear reconstruction, this report presents the innovation of prefabricating homografts into specific shapes that lend themselves appropriately to reconstruction problems. Supportive care of the child with leukemia and solid tumors has improved dramatically due to advances in blood component preparation and use. Despite these advances, unsolved questions remain which will require research into better component preparation and randomized clinical trials. The prevention of post-transfusion graft-vs-host disease in the immunocompromised patient will require research into optimum radiation dosages for blood products and the appropriate choice of patients to receive these products. Alloimmunization to platelet concentrates will continue to be a problem as children re

Autoimmune rheumatic disorders (ARD) represent a wide spectrum of disorders that affect in priority the joints, bones, muscles, and connective tissues. Examples of ARD include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren syndrome, polymyositis, systemic sclerosis, antiphospholipid syndrome and mixed connective tissue disease. Patients with ARD often require transfusion of red cell concentrates (RCC) or other blood-derived components. The presence of an autoimmune background, often complicated by the use of immunosuppressive medications, renders these patients quite vulnerable. E

Osteopetrosis is a hereditary disorder characterized by sclerotic, thick, weak, and brittle bone. The biological behavior of mesenchymal cells obtained from osteopetrosis patients has not been well-studied. Isolated mesenchymal stem/stromal cells from dental pulp (DP-MSSCs) of recently extracted deciduous teeth from osteopetrosis (OP) patients and healthy controls (HCs) were compared. We evaluated whether the dental pulp of OP patients has a population of MSSCs with similar multilineage differentiation capability to DP-MSSCs of healthy subjects. Stem/progenitor cells were characterized using i

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) with potential for therapeutic applications can be derived from somatic cells via ectopic expression of a set of limited and defined transcription factors. However, due to risks of random integration of the reprogramming transgenes into the host genome, the low efficiency of the process, and the potential risk of virally induced tumorigenicity, alternative methods have been developed to generate pluripotent cells using nonintegrating systems, albeit with limited success. Here, we show that c-KIT+ human first-trimester amniotic fluid stem cells (AFSCs) can

Skeletal tissues of 49 humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae that stranded between 2002 and 2011 along the Abrolhos Bank seashore and its adjacent waters in Brazil were studied. Twelve (24.5%) animals presented pathological changes in one or more bones. Degenerative changes and developmental malformations were most frequent (10.2% each), followed by inflammatory/infectious and traumatic lesions (8.2% each). Infectious diseases led to severe lesions of the caudal vertebrae of 2 whales. In one of these individuals, the lesions involved 6 caudal vertebrae, leading to ankylosis of 3 vertebrae. De

INTRODUCTION: Detailed anatomical knowledge of the distal end of the ulna plays a pivotal role in understanding post-injury instability and painful conditions at the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), which can be due to avulsion of the ulnar styloid process or ulnar styloid triquetral impaction syndrome. With this in mind, data on the morphological features of distal ulnae in the Indian population was collected.
METHODS: The distal end of 100 human ulnae (50 right-sided and 50-left sided) of unknown gender from the anatomy department's bone bank were studied with regard to the seat (articular c

Circulating hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells play important roles in the physiology and homeostasis of the hematopoietic system. The frequency of these cells varies throughout development, being more abundant during gestation. In the adult, the numbers of such cells are extremely low; however, they can be increased by intravenous administration of chemotherapy and/or recombinant cytokines to individuals. This mechanism--known as mobilization--involves the disruption of the interactions between primitive hematopoietic cells and microenvironment elements (stromal cells and extracellular m

Bone marrow transplantation has curative potential for patients with thalassemia major who have a matched sibling marrow donor, but usefulness of alternative stem cell sources is undergoing investigation. Cord blood (CB) from a sibling has different characteristics from marrow and has potential advantages and disadvantages as a stem cell source. Whereas many families caring for a child with thalassemia major (or other transplant-treatable condition) experience an additional pregnancy, most give birth at hospitals without the infrastructure needed to collect and process the new infant's CB. Transplantation of skin was adopted as a clinical method for wound closure soon after Reverdin's introduction of skin grafts in 1869. Split-skin grafts are grafts which consist of epidermis and a portion of dermis, and full thickness skin grafts are grafts consisting of epidermis and the entire dermis including adenexal structures. Composite grafts with skin consist of cartilage and skin coverings. Skin grafts can also be grouped according to source in autograft, isograft, allograft and xenograft. Split-thickness grafts are used to close wounds that cannot be managed by suturing, full thicknes

Over the past 6 years, umbilical cord blood has emerged as an efficacious alternative source of hematopoietic stem cells in related bone marrow transplantation. These encouraging results led us to extend this technology to the mismatched related and unrelated settings in three high-risk leukemic children lacking a matched-related donor for transplantation. Two of the three children also lacked identifiable donors through the National Marrow Donor Program, while the third was in relapse and did not have time to wait for completion of a search. The first child was transplanted with haploidentica

INTRODUCTION: Severe intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) and white matter injury (WMI) are major neurological complications in preterm infants, leading to long-term neurodevelopmental impairments. Despite advances in neonatal care, effective treatments are lacking. Umbilical cord blood cell (UCBC) therapy shows neuroprotective potential, with autologous sources ideal but often not feasible due to the unpredictability of preterm births. Allogeneic UCBCs offer an alternative, although immunogenicity and human leucocyte antigen (HLA) compatibility present challenges with knowledge gaps in their re

Introduction With advances in imaging and oncological treatment, limb salvage surgery has become a preferred option in musculoskeletal oncology. As survival rates improve, reconstruction durability becomes critical. Massive bone allografts offer a biological solution that preserves bone stock and joint integrity, but they are associated with notable complications. This series aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes of massive allograft reconstructions following tumor resections. Methods This is an observational and descriptive review of limb salvage surgeries performed at Penang General Hospita

BACKGROUND: Disseminated bacillus calmette guerin (BCG) infection is a rare but life threatening complication of BCG vaccination. It has been mainly seen in severe immune deficiency. A precise and rapid diagnosis is crucial for prompt initiation of an aggressive anti-mycobacterial treatment. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is directly applicable to smear-positive clinical specimens, proven to be a rapid and specific diagnostic test.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate disseminated BCG infection among 34 children in southern Iran, mainly confirmed by PCR.
