OBJECTIVES: Third and fourth branchial pouch sinuses can be rare causes of respiratory distress in neonates. An overview of this distinct clinical entity is missing in literature. To aid clinicians in recognizing and adequately treating this unique entity, we conducted a systematic review to discuss patient characteristics, diagnostic considerations and treatment strategy.
METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched from inception to December 29th, 2020. Original studies concerning patients with respiratory symptoms as a result of a third or fourth branchial pouch sinus, as confirmed with rigid

Congenital neck masses (CNMs) are developmental malformations that present with a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms and signs. They account for 21% to 45% of neck masses in children and 5% to 14% in adults. This study aimed to present the clinical manifestations and treatment of CNM from single-institution experiences. A retrospective analysis of patients surgically treated for CNM in a 12-year period was performed. Altogether, 117 patients (female/male ratio, 1:1.05) were diagnosed with CNM. The mean age at presentation was 26.91 years (range, 0.01-84 years). Within the study population, 120

The pharyngeal organs, namely the thyroid, thymus, parathyroids, and ultimobranchial bodies, derive from the pharyngeal endoderm during embryonic development. The pharyngeal region is a segmented structure comprised of a series of reiterated structures: the pharyngeal arches on the exterior surface, the pharyngeal pouches on the interior, and a mesenchymal core. It is well known that Hox genes control spatial identity along the anterior-posterior axis of the developing vertebrate embryo, and nowhere is this is more evident than in the pharyngeal region. Each of the distinct segmented regions h

Acute progressive weakness in bulbar, neck and limbs is included in several differential diagnoses, including the pharyngeal-cervical-brachial (PCB) variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Patients with the PCB variant of GBS are reported to have localized diagnostic cervical spinal nerve abnormalities that can be examined by nerve ultrasonography (NUS) and magnetic resonance neurography (MRN). We herein report the case of a 77-year-old man with the PCB variant of GBS. Although the nerve conduction study (NCS) findings were indirect indicators for an early diagnosis, the combination of NCS a

There is a group of lesions in the head and neck region derived from branchial arches and related structures which, when inflamed, are characterized by the formation of cysts lined by squamous or glandular epithelium and surrounded by a heavy inflammatory infiltrate rich in germinal centers. In the thyroid, the main source of various structures which may cause diagnostic dilemma is the ultimobranchial body. To investigate the spectrum of such thyroid lesions, the consultation files were reviewed for thyroid samples containing pathological structures regarded to arise from the ultimobranchial b

INTRODUCTION: Conduction block (CB) has been included in the Rajabally criteria for axonal Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Because the nerve roots may be affected early in GBS, detection of proximal CB by the triple stimulation technique (TST) can be useful.
METHODS: We describe TST findings in 2 patients who presented with the pharyngeal-cervical-brachial (PCB) variant of axonal GBS.
RESULTS: In the first patient, although conventional nerve conduction studies (NCS) did not fit electrodiagnostic criteria for axonal GBS, the TST detected proximal CB in the median and ulnar nerves. In the seco

INTRODUCTION: Acute suppurative thyroiditis and recurrent abscess formation due to third and fourth branchial anomalies typically present in children. However, thyroid abscesses in branchial anomalies may occur in adulthood as well. Failure to recognize and delayed drainage of a neck abscess may lead to a fulminant life-threatening outcome.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case series. The study group comprised all patients presenting over a 12-month period from January to December 2012 with thyroid abscesses and a branchial cleft anomaly in two centres, one adult and the other paediatric. Pa

Living archosaurs (crocodiles and birds) represent an intriguing evo-devo model system. Although close in phylogenetic relationship, the two lineages show considerable divergence in trends of phenotypic evolution. The head anatomy of recent crocodilians has changed little in comparison with that of their crocodylomorph ancestors. The head phenotype of the avians (birds), as well as some non-avian theropods, shows numerous evolutionary innovations that differ considerably from the crocodylomorph pattern. Most of the novel head structures, such as features of the craniofacial skeleton, cranial n

BACKGROUND: Cysts, sinuses or abscesses arising from second, third or fourth branchial cleft remnants may lie either within the body of, or in close proximity to the thyroid gland. Given their infrequent nature they may pose both diagnostic and management challenges for the treating surgeon when they occur in association with thyroid disorders.
METHODS: This is a case series. All patients with concomitant thyroid disorders and a branchial cleft anomaly treated in the University of Sydney Endocrine Surgical Unit in the 10-year period 1994-2003 comprised the study group. Patient demographics, c

A 28-year-old woman presented with right shoulder pain and, after a delay, a diagnosis of clavicular stress fracture was made. The patient gave no history of repetitive abnormal loading of the upper limbs which could have assisted the diagnosis. The authors wish to raise awareness of this rare diagnosis such that it can be considered in the differential for shoulder pain of unclear origin.

We report an adult male patient born to normal and non-consanguineous parents with midline craniofacial defects associated with branchial arch anomalies. This combination of signs belongs to the oculoauriculofrontonasal spectrum. We compare our case with those previously reported who had similar findings and discuss clinical aspects of the oculoauriculofrontonasal spectrum and frontofacionasal dysplasia.

The NADPH-diaphorase reaction was used to determine the distribution of postganglionic autonomic neurons in the branches of the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves supplying the gill arches of the cod fish, Gadus morhua. Neurons were common in major nerve trunks in all gill arches, especially in the post-trematic rami of the branchial nerves. From about 55% to more than 85% of the neurons in any branchial nerve were reactive for NADPH-diaphorase. The results suggest that the presence of NADPH-diaphorase, and presumably the ability to synthesise nitric oxide, have been a property of cranial paras

OBJECTIVE: A second source of motor innervation for the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle, other than the recurrent laryngeal nerve, has been suggested by clinical and experimental observations. Early anatomists noted what appeared to be small nerves connecting the cricothyroid and TA muscles; however, these observations were disputed by later anatomists and subsequently forgotten.
METHOD: In this study, we processed 27 human hemilarynges with Sihler's stain, a technique that clears soft tissue and counterstains nerve. In addition, four communicating nerves (CNs) were frozen sectioned and stained fo

The first and second branchial arch syndrome is a congenital affection, among whom one can range as well hereditary as non-hereditary entities. They always cause a badly mutilating facial asymmetry. In this article, the first and second branchial arch syndrome were divided in hemifacial and bilateral dysostoses. We pointed out the hemifacial microsomia, the most occurring entity in these series. From two case reports, we attempt to give a treatment synopsis of this syndrome, which is always done by a multi-disciplinary team, including dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons and plastic
