Incidence of breast cancer attributable to breast density, modifiable and non-modifiable breast cancer risk factors in Singapore.

Incidence of breast cancer is rising rapidly in Asia. Some breast cancer risk factors are modifiable. We examined the impact of known breast cancer risk factors, including body mass index (BMI), reproductive and hormonal risk factors, and breast density on the incidence of breast cancer, in Singapore. The study population was a population-based prospective trial of screening mammography - Singapore Breast Cancer Screening Project. Population attributable risk and absolute risks of breast cancer due to various risk factors were calculated. Among 28,130 women, 474 women (1.7%) developed breast c

Outcome of breast-conserving treatment for axillary lymph node metastasis from occult breast cancer with negative breast MRI.

PURPOSE: We conducted this study to investigate the prognosis and failure pattern after breast-conserving treatment (BCT) in patients with occult breast cancer (OBC) with negative breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (MRI-OBC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Survival rates and failure patterns in 66 patients who received axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and BCT for MRI-OBC between 2001 and 2013 at seven hospitals were analyzed. OBC was defined as adenocarcinoma in the axillary lymph node (ALN) +/- supraclavicular (SCN) or internal mammary lymph node (IMN) with a negative breast MRI. RESULTS:

Does Breast Density Increase the Risk of Re-excision for Women with Breast Cancer Having Breast-Conservation Therapy?

BACKGROUND: Women with dense breasts may have less-accurate preoperative evaluation of extent of disease, potentially affecting the achievement of negative margins. The goal of this study is to examine the association between breast density and re-excision rates in women having breast-conserving surgery for invasive breast cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Women with stage I/II invasive breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery between 1/1/2014 and 10/31/2014 were included. Breast density was assessed by two radiologists. The association between breast density and re-excision was exami

External breast prosthesis use: experiences and views of women with breast cancer, breast care nurses, and prosthesis fitters.

After mastectomy, the provision of an appropriate breast prosthesis can help to improve body image and quality of life and reduce associated emotional distress. Although up to 90% of women use an external breast prosthesis after mastectomy, little is known about their experiences and satisfaction with breast prosthesis use. Focus groups were conducted with women who had been fitted with an external breast prosthesis, breast care nurses, and prosthesis fitters to explore women's experiences of prosthesis use. Qualitative thematic content analysis of focus group transcripts indicated that wherea

Can Breast Self-examination and Clinical Breast Examination Along With Increasing Breast Awareness Facilitate Earlier Detection of Breast Cancer in Populations With Advanced Stages at Diagnosis?

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide. Early detection is central to improving disease outcomes. Three main screening methods - mammography, breast self-examination (BSE), and clinical breast examination (CBE) - have been developed and tested in Western nations. There is ongoing debate regarding the efficacy of BSE and CBE in terms of mortality reduction, and a number of international organizations no longer recommend them as screening methods. In technically less developed countries, however, where women are usually diagnosed with breast cancer at advanced stag

Influencing factors of significant breast edema in breast cancer patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery during radiotherapy with DIBH.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by radiotherapy is the standard of care for most early-stage breast cancer. Although Breast edema (BE) following radiotherapy has been widely reported, current studies mainly focuses on factors influencing post-radiotherapy BE and its impact on quality of life. This study investigates the factors associated with significant Breast edema (SBE) during radiotherapy, which may lead to notable changes in target dose distribution and potentially necessitate replanning, aiming to provide guidance for clinical management. METHODS: We re

European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists/Advanced Breast Cancer Global Alliance quality indicators for metastatic breast cancer care.

AIMS: Improvement in the care of patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) can only occur if the adequate quality of care is implemented and verified, including access to multidisciplinary, specialised care given in accordance with high-quality guidelines. To this purpose, European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists and the Advanced Breast Cancer Global Alliance joined efforts to develop the first set of quality indicators (QI) specifically for MBC that should be routinely measured and evaluated to ensure that breast cancer centres meet the required standards. METHODS: A working group of

Evaluation of breast stiffness pathology based on breast compression during mammography: Proposal for novel breast stiffness scale classification.

Breast cancer is diagnosed through a patient's Breast Self-Examination (BSE), Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), or para-clinical methods. False negativity of PCM in breast cancer diagnostics leads to a persisting problem associated with breast tumors diagnosed only in advanced stages. As the tumor volume/size at which it becomes invasive is not clear, BSE and CBE play an exceedingly important role in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. The quality and effectiveness of BSE and CBE depend on several factors, among which breast stiffness is the most important one. In this study, the authors pr

Effect of margins on ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence after breast conservation therapy for lymph node-negative breast carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Breast conservative surgery (CS) with radiotherapy (RT) is the most commonly used treatment for early-stage breast carcinoma. However, there is controversy regarding the importance of the pathologic margin status on the risk of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR). The current study evaluated the effect of the pathologic margin status on IBTR rates in a cohort of women with lymph node-negative breast carcinoma treated with CS and RT. METHODS: Between August 1980 and December 1994, 452 women with pathologically lymph node-negative breast carcinoma were treated with CS and RT

Detection of breast cancer in digital breast tomosynthesis with vision transformers.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) has revolutionized more traditional breast imaging through its three-dimensional (3D) visualization capability that significantly enhances lesion discernibility, reduces tissue overlap, and improves diagnostic precision as compared to conventional two-dimensional (2D) mammography. In this study, we propose an advanced Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system that harnesses the power of vision transformers to augment DBT's diagnostic efficiency. This scheme uses a neural network to glean attributes from the 2D slices of DBT followed by post-processing that consid

Estimation of Breast Cancer Overdiagnosis in a U.S. Breast Screening Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Mammography screening can lead to overdiagnosis-that is, screen-detected breast cancer that would not have caused symptoms or signs in the remaining lifetime. There is no consensus about the frequency of breast cancer overdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the rate of breast cancer overdiagnosis in contemporary mammography practice accounting for the detection of nonprogressive cancer. DESIGN: Bayesian inference of the natural history of breast cancer using individual screening and diagnosis records, allowing for nonprogressive preclinical cancer. Combination of fitted natural his

Secretory carcinoma of the breast limited to the dermis: Cutaneous or breast primary?

We offer a case of a 22-year-old woman who presented with a painless breast mass. Physical examination of the breast was unrevealing other than a palpable mass in close proximity to the nipple areolar region. No lymphadenopathy was noticed in the axilla or supraclavicular region. Sonographic assessment was performed and the findings were classified as Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System category 4. Because of the proximity of the mass to the skin surface, an excisional biopsy was performed. Final pathology disclosed a 5-mm invasive carcinoma. On pathologic examination, histopathology and

Correlation between Breast Ultrasound Microcalcification and the Prognosis of Breast Cancer.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Breast cancer is a common gynecological disease, and its incidence and mortality are higher than those of other common malignant tumors. Breast ultrasound technology is a new surgical method, which has the advantages of reducing postoperative complications, improving the quality of life of patients, and improving the prognosis of patients. Breast microcalcification is a new method for the treatment of tumors. Its mechanism is that the proliferation of breast cancer cell walls increases the inflammatory factors in the cancer tissues and enhances the formation of tumors and peripheral vascular t

Mammographic breast density is associated with the development of contralateral breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women with dense mammographic breast density (BD) have a 2-fold increased risk of developing primary breast cancer (BC). The authors hypothesized that dense mammographic BD also is associated with an increased risk of developing contralateral breast cancer (CBC). METHODS: Among female patients treated at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for sporadic, AJCC stage I to stage III BC between January 1997 and December 2012, the authors identified patients who had developed metachronous CBC (cases) and selected 1:2 matched controls who did not develop CBC using incidence
