Eight atopic adolescent subjects with exercise-induced bronchospasm were studied to determine whether cromolyn sodium could inhibit or block sulfur dioxide (SO2)-induced bronchoconstriction. Cromolyn or placebo were administered by turboinhaler 20 minutes before 10 minutes of SO2 exposure at 1.0 ppm during continuous moderate exercise on a treadmill. A total of 203 patients in asthmatic state were studied. Out of the patients studied 98 (48.27%) were in stage I of asthmatic state, 87 (42.85%) in stage II and 18 (8.86%) in stage III. In 7 patients (3.44%), the asthmatic state advanced quickly with generalized bronchospasm. We report of the case of a young woman with three hospitalizations and six emergency room visits for treatment of bronchospasm and angioedema first thought to be the result of Hymenoptera venom allergic reactions. This case concerns an elite road cyclist who complained of occasional dyspnoea and inspiratory difficulty during intense exercise. Clinical examination was normal and the final diagnosis was vocal cord dysfunction, a paradoxical closure of the vocal cords during inspiration which is highly associated with inspiratory stridor at high rates of ventilation. Awareness by the sports physician of this not uncommon condition is important to avoid misdiagnosis.

We report on 15 patients with velo-cardiofacial syndrome who had a severe form of tetralogy of Fallot (pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and hypoplastic pulmonary arteries). Noncardiac anomalies in these patients included typical facial and ear anomalies in 15, nasal speech in 13, palate anomalies in 10, and developmental delay in 10.
