We describe two boys affected by Down syndrome (DS), who showed milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC). The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination. All reported cases are reviewed and compared. Syringeal structures play a significant part in the pathogenesis of this dermatosis. MICC appears to be a poorly recognized condition which, rarely, is associated with DS.

Gout is an inflammatory disorder resulting from the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in body tissues. Chronic or undertreated gout can progress to tophaceous gout. Although it most commonly affects the joints, auricular involvement is rare and can be misdiagnosed as other conditions, such as calcinosis cutis. We report a case of a 36-year-old male with a two-year history of slowly growing, painless, hard, white nodules on both auricles. Laboratory investigations revealed hyperuricemia, and histopathological examination demonstrated features consistent with gout tophi. Based on the…

Calcinosis cutis can occur idiopathically or be associated with injury, metabolic disease, and different rheumatologic diseases such as scleroderma and dermatomyositis. Calcinosis cutis is often treatment-resistant and leads to decreased quality of life and pain. Medical therapies, such as bisphosphonates, warfarin, tetracyclines, calcium channel blockers, colchicine, laser therapy and surgery, lithotripsy, and even stem cell transplantation have been used with varying success.1 Lesions of calcinosis cutis can persist even when systemic disease is adequately controlled leaving the patient with…

BACKGROUND: Subcutis calcinosis, characterized by abnormal calcium deposition in the skin, is a rare side effect of calcium containing heparins.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two patients with renal failure presented skin lesions after receiving a calcium-containing heparin treatment. The first patient exhibited erythematous nodules on the abdomen and the second a large erythematous induration of the abdomen and nodules on the thighs. Both had normal blood analysis. The diagnosis of subcutis calcinosis was confirmed by the histological exam showing calcium deposit in the dermis and hypodermis. Outcom

An 88-year-old woman with CREST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasias) presented with hyperglycemia, intravascular depletion, and atrial fibrillation. The patient was found to have unusually severe calcinosis cutis in both legs extending from the knees to the ankles bilaterally, as well as Raynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasias. The patient was normocalcemic and normophosphatemic. Although subcutaneous calcification is often seen with CREST syndrome, this case is unusual in that the area of involvement was much …

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is associated with many distinguishing features including cutaneous calcinosis, vasculitis, and ulcerated lesions. In this case, we describe an unusual presentation in a 12-year-old girl who had muscle weakness along with linear morphea over the right upper and lower extremities with overlying lichen sclerosus and calcinosis cutis. Of interest, these initial cutaneous manifestations occurred years before onset of myositis.

We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with stage IV, non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Baseline F-FDG PET/CT scan revealed lymphadenopathy with brea … is, and thighs showed similar calcifications. Posttherapy PET/CT showed a significant resolution of calcinosis cutis. This case presents a postchemotherapy idiopathic calcinosis cutis with rapid spontaneous resolution.

Calcinosis cutis is a deposition of calcium in the skin and subcutaneous tissue, often accompanied by pain, reduced mobility, and chronic infections. Limited evidence is available about the feasibility and efficacy of therapies alternative to systemic treatment and surgical excision, both of which often lead to unsatisfactory results or complications. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical and intralesional sodium thiosulfate, extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL), and laser for calcinosis cutis. PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched. …

Soft tissue calcifications associated with various connective tissue diseases such as dermatomyositis and scleroderma have been well documented Plaque-like sheets of subcutaneous calcifications presenting as an indurated soft tissue mass in a patient with primary Sjogren syndrome have been rarely documented in the literature. We present the magnetic resonance and conventional radiographic findings of calcinosis cutis and calcinosis circumscripta of a 47-year-old woman with biopsy proven Sjogren syndrome. We also delineate various types of soft tissue calcification, histopathology of calcinosis…
