Binge-spectrum symptoms in their association with higher gestational weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational weight gain (GWG) above or below recommendations is common and has implications for parent and infant health. Bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder during pregnancy have been associated with higher GWG. Yet, little research has examined the associations between binge-spectrum symptoms and GWG. Likewise, few interventions exist to adequately prevent GWG. The current study investigated a broad range of predictors of GWG, with the goal of identifying potentially modifiable risk factors. METHOD: We conducted secondary data analyses of a subsample of individuals from the

Mobility and self-care trajectories for individuals with cerebral palsy (aged 1-21 years): a joint longitudinal analysis of cohort data from the Netherlands and Canada.

BACKGROUND: A good understanding of developmental trajectories is crucial for making prognoses, planning interventions, and monitoring progress in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. Our study aimed to describe developmental trajectories of mobility and self-care capability in a large sample of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy from the Netherlands and Canada. METHODS: We did longitudinal data analyses of cohorts from the Netherlands (Pediatric Rehabilitation Research in the Netherlands; PERRIN) and Ontario, Canada (Adolescent Study of Quality of Life, Mobility, and Exerc

Association Between Artificially Sweetened Beverage Consumption During Pregnancy and Infant Body Mass Index.

IMPORTANCE: The consumption of artificial sweeteners has increased substantially in recent decades, including among pregnant women. Animal studies suggest that exposure to artificial sweeteners in utero may predispose offspring to develop obesity; however, to our knowledge, this has never been studied in humans. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether maternal consumption of artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy is associated with infant body mass index (BMI [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared]). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study incl

Income inequalities in multimorbidity prevalence in Ontario, Canada: a decomposition analysis of linked survey and health administrative data.

BACKGROUND: The burden of multimorbidity is a growing clinical and health system problem that is known to be associated with socioeconomic status, yet our understanding of the underlying determinants of inequalities in multimorbidity and longitudinal trends in measured disparities remains limited. METHODS: We included all adult respondents from four cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) (between 2005 to 2011/12), linked at the individual-level to health administrative data in Ontario, Canada (pooled n = 113,627). Multimorbidity was defined at each survey response as having ≥2

Young adult self-harm: The role of victimisation and polygenic risk in a population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Victimisation has been associated with self-harm (with or without suicidal intent), but little is known about this association during young adulthood-a distinct developmental period. Further, not all individuals who experience victimisation will later engage in self-harm, suggesting the influence of other factors. The present study examined whether perceived victimisation is associated with self-harm during young adulthood while adjusting for confounders such as peer victimisation and mental health difficulties in adolescence. Additionally, we investigated whether genetic susceptib

CCL2 in the Circulation Predicts Long-Term Progression of Interstitial Lung Disease in Patients With Early Systemic Sclerosis: Data From Two Independent Cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: There are few clinical predictors of the progression of systemic sclerosis (SSc)-related interstitial lung disease (ILD). The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive significance of key cytokines for long-term progression of ILD and survival in 2 independent cohorts of patients with early SSc. METHODS: Plasma levels of 11 Th1/Th2 cytokines (interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, tumor necrosis factor, CCL2, interferon-inducible T cell α chemoattractant, and interferon-γ-inducible 10-kd protein) were measured in 266 patients with early SSc in the

Prospective associations between ADHD symptoms and physical conditions from early childhood to adolescence: a population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and physical conditions is frequent but often goes unrecognised. Most available evidence on the links between ADHD and physical conditions relies on cross-sectional studies. Understanding temporal sequences of associations is key to inform appropriate treatment and preventive strategies. We aimed to assess possible longitudinal associations between ADHD symptoms and a broad range of physical conditions, adjusting for several confounding factors. METHODS: Participants came from the population-based Quebec Lon

Deviation From Normative Whole Brain and Deep Gray Matter Growth in Children With MOGAD, MS, and Monophasic Seronegative Demyelination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pediatric-acquired demyelination of the CNS associated with antibodies directed against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG; MOG antibody-associated disease [MOGAD]) occurs as a monophasic or relapsing disease and with variable but often extensive T2 lesions in the brain. The impact of MOGAD on brain growth during maturation is unknown. We quantified the effect of pediatric MOGAD on brain growth trajectories and compared this with the growth trajectories of age-matched and sex-matched healthy children and children with multiple sclerosis (MS, a chronic relapsing

Spinal Cord Leptomeningeal Enhancement as a Marker of Extensive Spinal Cord Involvement in Children With MOGAD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord leptomeningeal enhancement (LME) can be observed in children with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) and with seronegative myelitis. We investigated whether the presence of spinal cord LME in MOGAD and seronegative myelitis is associated with distinct clinical, CSF, and MRI findings. METHODS: Study participants were identified among the 490 children and adolescents recruited to the Canadian Pediatric Demyelinating Disease study following an incident attack of CNS demyelination. Inclusion criteria for this study were:

The role of frailty in the relationships between social relationships and health outcomes: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Socially isolated older adults incur increased risks of adverse health outcomes, though the strength of this association is unclear. We examined whether changes in physical frailty moderated the associations between changes in social relationships and changes in health outcomes among older adults. METHODS: This longitudinal study is based on three waves of the FRéLE study among 1643 Canadian community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and older over 2 years. We performed latent growth curve modelling (LGMs) to assess changes with the assumption of missing not at random, adjustin

Personality to Prescription Drug Misuse in Adolescents: Testing Affect Regulation, Psychological Dysregulation, and Deviance Proneness Pathways.

Background: Fifteen to 25-year-olds are the age group most likely to misuse prescription drugs. Few studies have tested theory-driven models of adolescent risk for prescription drug misuse. Moreover, rarely are distinct pathways to different forms of prescription drug misuse considered. Methods: We tested mediational paths from personality to mental health symptoms to prescription drug misuse, informed by etiological models of addiction. We specified pathways from particular personality traits to unique forms of prescription drug misuse via specific mental health symptoms. We used semi-longitu

Phthalates and bisphenols early-life exposure, and childhood allergic conditions: a pooled analysis of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to plastic additives, such as phthalates and bisphenols, has been associated with a higher risk of allergic conditions, but the evidence is inconsistent for children younger than five. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between pre- and postnatal urinary phthalates and bisphenols, and allergic conditions, and potential effect modification by sex, in pre-school children, through a pooled analysis. METHODS: We pooled data from the Barwon Infant Study (Australia), the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development Study (Canada), the Health Outcomes and Measures of the

Fractures at virtually all sites are associated with adverse outcomes: an observational study.

The FRAX model defines fractures occurring at the hip, vertebrae, humerus, and forearm as major osteoporotic fractures (MOF), leading to the misconception that fractures at other sites (NonMOF) are unimportant. We aimed to compare MOF and NonMOF to 1) assess their contribution to subsequent fracture and mortality risks and 2) the differences in subsequent fracture and mortality risks between MOF and NonMOF as well as 3) assess these contributions using an anatomical classification of hip, vertebral, proximal and distal fractures. Data from 7568 women and 3366 men aged 60+ were utilised from tw

Associations Between Circulating Metabolites and Skin Cancer: A Bidirectional Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, categorized into melanoma and non-melanoma types. While genetics play a crucial role in the development of skin cancer, recent developments in metabolomics have revealed that circulating metabolites influence genetic risk profiles. METHODS: In this study, we utilized a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach, analyzing metabolite datasets from the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging (CLSA) and skin cancer datasets from the UK Biobank. Replication analyses were performed with the 10th round of the Finn

Prospective association between baseline ultra-processed food consumption and future adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines in children: findings from the SENDO project.

UNLABELLED: This study evaluates whether baseline ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption predicts failure to meet 24-h movement guidelines at 2-year follow-up in early childhood. Data from 586 participants (aged 4-5 years at baseline) from the SENDO project were analyzed. Dietary intake was assessed through a validated 149-item FFQ, completed by parents, and categorized by NOVA classification. Physical activity, screen time, and sleep time were assessed through questionnaires, based on the 24-h movement guidelines established by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and the WHO. Overall

Combining Frailty and Trabecular Bone Score Did Not Improve Predictive Accuracy in Risk of Major Osteoporotic Fractures.

It is recognized that the trabecular bone score (TBS) provides skeletal information, and frailty measurement is significantly associated with increased risks of adverse health outcomes. Given the suboptimal predictive power in fracture risk assessment tools, we aimed to evaluate the combination of frailty and TBS regarding predictive accuracy for risk of major osteoporotic fracture (MOF). Data from the prospective longitudinal study of CaMos (Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study) were used for this study. TBS values were estimated using lumbar spine (L1 to L4 ) dual-energy X-ray absorptiome

Investigating the associations of acute psychedelic experiences and changes in racial trauma symptoms, psychological flexibility, and substance use among People with Racial and Ethnic Minoritized Identities in the United States and Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that psychedelics may serve as a therapeutic approach to reduce substance use; however, people with racial and ethnic minoritized (REM) identities are often excluded from this research. We investigated whether psychedelic use affects other substance use among REM people and whether perceived changes in psychological flexibility and racial trauma mediates this association. METHODS: REM people in the United States and Canada (N = 211; 32 % Black, 29 % Asian, 18 % American Indian/Indigenous Canadian, 21 % Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander; 57 % female; mean age = 3

Traumatic brain injury in homeless and marginally housed individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a global public health concern, and traumatic brain injury (TBI) could represent an underappreciated factor in the health trajectories of homeless and marginally housed individuals. We aimed to evaluate the lifetime prevalence of TBI in this population, and to summarise findings on TBI incidence and the association between TBI and health-related or functioning-related outcomes. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched without date restrictions for original research studies in English that reported data on the prevalence or incidence of TBI
