Cardiovascular risk score change in HIV-1-infected patients switched to an atazanavir-based combination antiretroviral regimen.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to establish whether the limited impact of atazanavir on the plasma lipid profile could translate into a reduction in the predicted cardiovascular risk in antiretroviral (ARV)-experienced patients switching to an atazanavir-containing regimen. METHODS: HIV-1-infected treatment-experienced patients, switched to atazanavir for whatever reason and without prior major cardiovascular events, were selected and followed for at least 1 month. An individual cardiovascular risk score (10-year risk of major cardiovascular events) based on validated events and measurable risk factors

Evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors in HIV-1 infected patients using carotid intima-media thickness measurement.

BACKGROUND: Highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART) in HIV-infected patients are often associated with lipodystrophy syndrome and metabolic disorders. Atherogenic lipid profile could expose these patients to atheromatous cardiovascular disease. We describe carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT), a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis, according to HIV status, antiretroviral treatment, lipodystrophy and conventional cardiovascular risk factors. METHOD: In a multicenter prospective cohort study we have surveyed HIV-infected subjects with a carotid IMT measurement by B-mode ultrasonog

Association between COVID-19 infection, elevated C-reactive protein, and neuropsychiatric symptoms in individuals with metabolic and cardiovascular comorbidities.

Elevated serum inflammatory markers are associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms. This process is potentially more intense in individuals with chronic comorbidities such as obesity, systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), and diabetes mellitus (DM). Such conditions already establish a basal inflammatory state, which can be aggravated by acute viral infections, such as COVID-19, worsening neuropsychiatric outcomes. Given this panorama, this cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the association between the presence of pre-existing comorbidities, elevated plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a

Impact of Lupus on All-Cause, Cardiovascular, and Infection-Related Mortality Among Dialysis Patients: Okinawa Dialysis Study Registry.

INTRODUCTION: Lupus nephritis is one of the most serious complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and can lead to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). We aimed to assess the relative mortality risk associated with SLE among dialysis patients. METHODS: This retrospective longitudinal cohort study included all dialysis patients in the Okinawa Dialysis Study 30 registry. Cox proportional hazard models were performed to assess mortality. RESULTS: Of 5246 patients, 111 had ESKD secondary to SLE. Compared with ESKD patients secondary to other causes, those with SLE had significantly higher

Human papillomavirus infection and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: a comprehensive review of epidemiological evidence, molecular mechanisms, and vaccination-mediated protection.

Emerging epidemiological evidence indicates that persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes is independently associated with elevated atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, challenging traditional paradigms of cardiovascular risk assessment. This review synthesises current observational data on this association, explores the potential inflammatory, immune, and metabolic mechanisms that may connect HPV to atherogenesis, and evaluates the emerging evidence for cardiovascular protection conferred by HPV vaccination. Large cohort studies report significant

[Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) Expert consensus document: Post-acute cardiovascular sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection].

Although the clinical course of COVID-19 in its acute phase is now delineated, less known is its late phase characterized by a heterogeneous series of sequelae affecting various organs and systems, including the cardiovascular system, which continue after the acute episode or arise after their resolution. This syndrome, now referred with the new acronym "PASC" (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection) has been formally recognized by various scientific societies and international organizations that have proposed various definitions. The World Health Organization defines PASC, distinguishing

Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and its association with coronary heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors in a sample South Asian population.

Recent studies have suggested that a chronic infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) may be associated with the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). A case control study was conducted to investigate the association between C. pneumoniae infection and coronary heart disease and coronary risk factors in a sample South Asian population. C. pneumoniae specific IgG antibody was measured by microimmunofluorescence. Among controls 56.6% were seropositive (> or =1/32) compared to 58.5% of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients (n=41, odds ratio 1.08, CI 0.37--3.12, P=0.93)

Cardiovascular disease risk from prior Chlamydia pneumoniae infection can be related to certain antigens recognized in the immunoblot profile.

Chlamydia pneumoniae infection has been described as a risk factor for atherosclerosis on the basis of raised seroreactivity against complete elementary bodies among cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients. In order to identify antigens of possible pathogenetic relevance, C. pneumoniae IgG and IgA immunoblot profiles were compared for CVD patients (IgG: n = 159; IgA: n = 72) and for controls (IgG: n = 158; IgA: n = 115), all with prior C. pneumoniae infection. IgG and IgA recognition patterns were very similar, and a broad range of antigens was commonly recognized. However, statistical analysis

Elevated Methylglyoxal: An Elusive Risk Factor Responsible for Early-Onset Cardiovascular Diseases in People Living with HIV-1 Infection.

People living with HIV (PLWH) develop cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) about a decade earlier and at rates 2-3 times higher than the general population. At present, pharmacological strategies to delay the onset of CVDs in PLWH are unavailable, in part because of an incomplete understanding of its molecular causes. We and others recently uncovered elevated levels of the toxic glycolysis and inflammation-induced byproduct methylglyoxal (MG) in plasma from PLWH and from HIV-infected humanized mice (Hu-mice). We also found a reduction in expression of the primary MG-degrading enzyme glyoxalase I (Gl
