Contrary to an old belief, bile duct carcinoma is not a rare disorder in Egypt. Among 730 patients referred for an ERCP examination, twenty-nine consecutive patients were diagnosed as having bile duct carcinoma. The cause of this type of carcinoma remains unknown. Results of determination of the quantitative content of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) demonstrated chronic typhoid carrier state to be a dynamic process characterized by high IgA and IgG indices which began to form as early as the acute period. A complex of clinico-laboratory indices permitted to detect the latent phase of the carrier state among the persons who sustained typhoid fever within the range of 30%; this confirmed the statement of a number of investigators put forward earlier that the true number of carriers was much greater than that recorded.

The incidence of primary genital herpes among women of the childbearing age in Khabarovsk is 2.6% or from 0 to 10.4 per 1000. Asymptomatic herpes simplex virus (HSV) carrier state in the genital tract was detected in 24.1 +/- 5.2% normal women. The virus-carrier state exerts untoward effects on the course of pregnancy and condition of the fetus. In women infected with HSV, the hazard of abortion is 1.8 times as frequent, premature delivery is 3.2 times as frequent, and children of such mothers have symptoms of intrauterine hypotrophy 4.5 times as frequently as normally.

Testing of paired serum samples of 12 children with the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) antibody to HB, Ag, and antibody to the hepatitis B core antigen revealed evidence of hepatitis B virus infection in three. None of the three, however, developed overt clinical hepatitis or the chronic HBsAg carrier state. These data suggest that the immunologic defects seen in the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome permit adequate immune responses to the hepatitis B virus and do not predispose to the chronic HBsAg carrier state.
