The micropsychopathology of hebephrenic/catatonic schizophrenia.

All hospital records, interviews, and notes are reviewed on a group of 52 chronic hebephrenic/catatonic schizophrenics who were institutionalized before the era of antipsychotic medications. The authors catalog the presence or absence of individual symptoms of schizophrenia on a year by year basis over a span of 25 years and present this data in a series of bar graphs. Symptoms such as avolition, impaired social interaction, and flat affect become more frequent over the 25 years of follow-up. Hallucinations and delusions become less frequent. Eighteen of the patients are noted to have had a DS

Reference-guided detection of the transcriptome reveals circular RNA-related competing endogenous RNA networks in response to three respiration pathogens in pig lungs.

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), African swine fever virus (ASFV), and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp) have been found to injure pig lungs and lead to enormous economic losses in the global pig industry. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play crucial roles in immune response and viral infection. However, the roles of circRNAs during the three pathogens infecting lungs remain largely unknown in pigs. In this study, we utilized RNA-seq reads from 91 datasets of pig lungs to reference-guided detection of transcriptome reconstruct circRNAs and further construct circRNA-relate

Role of plate convergence rate in shaping earthquake recurrence in subduction zones.

Understanding the complex interplay of subduction zone processes is key to unravelling the timing and distribution of great earthquake cycles within the framework of the plate tectonics paradigm. Megathrust earthquakes, though extensively investigated and their quasi-repetitive nature well recognised, remain challenging to assess globally due to their long recurrence intervals and limited historical data. Slow earthquakes in the brittle-to-ductile transition zone interact dynamically with megathrust events, but their potential to trigger or delay large earthquakes remains unclear. The periodic

FAIRification on Trial? A Provenance and Reproducible Metadata Build Pipeline for Clinical Research.

Clinical trial registries often focus on the human user and do not focus on machine-actionable structures and means to detect and manage provenance, thus hindering large scale reliable reuse and verification. This study presents a FAIRification pipeline for EU Clinical Trials Registry metadata, which preserves provenance and enables the reproduction of results. When the pipeline is run on the trials uploaded between 2022 and 2025, it was able to convert 94.84% of trial metadata into NFDI4Health metadata model. The process demonstrates almost complete population of the target model's mandatory

Blood-based tumor biomarkers: integrating biological layers and analytical strategies for precision cancer detection.

Blood-based cancer biomarkers promise minimally invasive, longitudinal monitoring, yet their clinical utility varies profoundly by analyte class, disease stage, and analytical methodology. This Review critically evaluates six circulating biomarker classes, such as CTCs, ctDNA, cfDNA methylation, exosomes, circulating miRNAs, and tumor-educated platelets-moving beyond a descriptive catalog to a comparative analysis of their performance characteristics. We find that the dominant challenge is no longer signal detection per se, but rather signal interpretation in the presence of biological confoun

Fifteen years of the Diversity Outbred mouse model: a review.

Mouse models have played a critical role in complementing human genetics research due to their genetic similarity to humans and well-annotated and tractable genome. For over 15 years, the Diversity Outbred (DO) mice have existed as a powerful tool for mapping complex traits. With eight founder strains contributing to high levels of genetic diversity, heterozygosity, and large numbers of recombination events, DO mice allow for high-resolution genetic mapping. DO mice have been used to dissect the genetic architecture of physiological traits like blood lipids, behavioral traits such as cocaine s

Herbal hazards: Unveiling the dark side of unknown botanical remedies.

OBJECTIVE: In some areas, patients often turn to traditional remedies, including local herbs, due to the lack of medical resources. However, the flora in many regions remains largely uncataloged, posing significant risks due to the unknown properties and potential toxicities of these plants. CASE REPORT: The case report presented describes a female patient from Angola who suffered severe facial disfigurement and visual impairment after using filanganga to treat an odontogenic abscess. The herb's corrosive effects underscore the dangers of unverified traditional remedies. This case highlights

High-throughput screening for class I peptide MHC binding via yeast surface display.

T cells rely on short peptides presented by highly polymorphic major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) to selectively initiate adaptive immune responses. Despite its importance, few techniques can systemically evaluate stable peptide presentation across diverse MHC alleles. Here, we describe a yeast display pipeline that can be deployed to rapidly screen proteomic space to identify class I pMHC binders across many alleles. Through this, we capture unique biological phenomena such as interference with peptide presentation via type IV drug-induced hypersensitivity. We apply this approach to mu

Linkages between incarceration and health for older adults.

The aging population in United States (US) correctional facilities has grown dramatically over the last several decades. At present, roughly one in four adults incarcerated in US prisons are at least 50 years of age. Research over the last ten years has likewise expanded to catalog the impacts of incarceration on older adults, and the myriad ways incarceration is unique for this population. In this paper, we summarize the state of the literature at the intersection of incarceration, health, and aging. We begin by outlining the impacts of incarceration on a range of individual health outcomes f

Comprehensive analysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis genomes reveals genetic variations in bacterial virulence.

Tuberculosis, a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a significant health problem worldwide. Here, we developed a method to detect large insertions and deletions (indels), which have been generally understudied. Leveraging this framework, we performed a comprehensive analysis of single nucleotide variants and small and large indels across 1,960 Mtb clinical isolates. Comparing the distribution of variants demonstrated that gene disruptive variants are underrepresented in genes essential for bacterial survival. An evolutionary analysis revealed that Mtb genomes are enriched in

Genetic analysis of the human microglial transcriptome across brain regions, aging and disease pathologies.

Microglia have emerged as important players in brain aging and pathology. To understand how genetic risk for neurological and psychiatric disorders is related to microglial function, large transcriptome studies are essential. Here we describe the transcriptome analysis of 255 primary human microglial samples isolated at autopsy from multiple brain regions of 100 individuals. We performed systematic analyses to investigate various aspects of microglial heterogeneities, including brain region and aging. We mapped expression and splicing quantitative trait loci and showed that many neurological d

Identification and mapping of a new recessive dwarfing gene dw9 on the 6RL rye chromosome and its phenotypic effects.

The introduction of high-yielding semi-dwarf varieties of wheat into cultivation has led to a "green revolution." This has required intensive research into various sources of dwarfism in wheat. However, there has been very little advancement in research on dwarfing genes in rye in comparison to wheat or barley. So far, three dominant dwarfing genes (Ddw1, Ddw3, and Ddw4) and three recessive genes (ct1, ct2, and np) have been characterized and precisely mapped in rye. There is no complete catalog of dwarfing genes available in rye. This paper presents an identification of the source of dwarfism

Women with Mental Illness - An Overview of Sociocultural Factors Influencing Family Rejection and Subsequent Institutionalization in India.

BACKGROUND: Family abandonment and rejection resulting in homelessness are detrimental to women diagnosed with mental illness in India. A majority of the literature related to homelessness holds a western background, and women's homelessness in relation to mental illness is relatively unexplored in the Indian context. This review was conducted to understand the sociocultural factors influencing family rejection and to synthesize the living situation of institutionalized women with mental illness in India. METHODS: Literature search in electronic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar), carried out

Cutaneous findings in hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous findings associated with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) remain largely undescribed in the literature, yet are substantial and correlative with disease course. OBJECTIVE: To catalog the clinical findings of cutaneous eruptions associated with HLH. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients meeting the criteria for HLH at two hospitals over 5 years. All patients meeting the criteria for HLH as defined by the HLH-2004 protocol were included. RESULTS: Cutaneous lesions were categorized based on clinical presentations and histology. Lesions ind

MeRP: a high-throughput pipeline for Mendelian randomization analysis.

We present a Mendelian randomization (MR) pipeline (MeRP) to facilitate rapid, causal inference analysis through automating key steps in developing and analyzing genetic instruments obtained from publicly available data. Our tool uses the National Human Genome Research Institute catalog of associations to generate instrumental variable trait files and provides methods for filtering of potential confounding associations as well as linkage disequilibrium. MeRP generates estimated causal effect scores via a MR-score analysis using summary data for disease endpoints typically found in the public d

Exome sequencing identifies 2 novel presenilin 1 mutations (p.L166V and p.S230R) in British early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) represents 1%-2% of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases, and it is generally characterized by a positive family history and a rapidly progressive symptomatology. Rare coding and fully penetrant variants in amyloid precursor protein (APP), presenilin 1 (PSEN1), and presenilin 2 (PSEN2) are the only causative mutations reported for autosomal dominant AD. Thus, in this study we used exome sequencing data to rapidly screen rare coding variability in APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2, in a British cohort composed of 47 unrelated EOAD cases and 179 elderly controls, neuropa

Multiple populations of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum in Cambodia.

We describe an analysis of genome variation in 825 P. falciparum samples from Asia and Africa that identifies an unusual pattern of parasite population structure at the epicenter of artemisinin resistance in western Cambodia. Within this relatively small geographic area, we have discovered several distinct but apparently sympatric parasite subpopulations with extremely high levels of genetic differentiation. Of particular interest are three subpopulations, all associated with clinical resistance to artemisinin, which have skewed allele frequency spectra and high levels of haplotype homozygosit

West Nile virus diagnosis and vaccination: using unique viral peptide sequences to evoke specific immune responses.

West Nile virus (WNV) infection may be associated with fever, neurologic disorders, and acute flaccid paralysis as a final clinical outcome. In spite of the numerous WNV infection outbreaks in Africa, Eurasia, Australia, and North America and notwithstanding an intense research effort for developing effective anti-WNV vaccines, currently no immunopreventive or therapeutic approaches are available. Moreover, antigenic cross-reactivity among flaviviruses can make difficult WNV serodiagnosis. Here we analyze the primary sequence of WNV polyprotein searching for peptide modules that might be utili
