Virus-induced congenital malformations in cattle.

Diagnosing the cause of bovine congenital malformations (BCMs) is challenging for bovine veterinary practitioners and laboratory diagnosticians as many known as well as a large number of not-yet reported syndromes exist. Foetal infection with certain viruses, including bovine virus diarrhea virus (BVDV), Schmallenberg virus (SBV), blue tongue virus (BTV), Akabane virus (AKAV), or Aino virus (AV), is associated with a range of congenital malformations. It is tempting for veterinary practitioners to diagnose such infections based only on the morphology of the defective offspring. However, diagno

Perosomus elumbis in Danish Holstein cattle.

BACKGROUND: Perosomus elumbis (PE) is a congenital defect that has been observed sporadically in Holstein cattle for many years. However, several cases have been reported in recent years and this may indicate an unrecognised spread of a mutant allele in the Holstein population worldwide. Two cases in Danish Holstein calves are reported to provide details on the phenotype. CASE PRESENTATION: Two full-term Holstein calves were born after assisted delivery due to dystocia with breech presentation. External morphological examination indicated that the lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae were a…

Zygomycotic lymphadenitis in slaughtered feedlot cattle.

During the 12 months of 2006, zygomycotic lymphadenitis was diagnosed in 194 of 198 feedlot steers (0.04% of cattle slaughtered during that period) in a California slaughterhouse as part of bovine tuberculosis surveillance. Mesenteric lymph nodes were involved in 190 cases. Affected lymph nodes were enlarged (2 to 42 cm in greatest dimension), firm, and mottled gray-white to yellow with multiple granular or caseocalcareous foci. Histologically, nodal architecture was effaced by necrosis, granulomatous inflammation, and fibrosis. In approximately 20% of the cases, granulomas were mainly restric…

Malignant edema in postpartum dairy cattle.

Five cases of postparturient vulvovaginitis and metritis in cattle caused by Clostridium septicum (malignant edema) are described in the current report. The diagnosis was established based on detection of C. septicum by culture and fluorescent antibody test. All animals were Holsteins, and 4 were primiparous (the parity of 1 animal was not reported). All animals developed clinical signs 1-3 days after calving, consisting of swelling of perineal and perivulvar areas, fever, and depression. Perineal, perivulvar, and perivaginal gelatinous and often hemorrhagic edema was consistently observed on …

Genotyping Brahman cattle for generalised glycogenosis.

OBJECTIVE: To develop procedures for genotyping Brahman cattle for loss-of-function alleles within the acidic alpha-glucosidase gene and to assess the risk of generalised glycogenosis in Australian Brahman cattle. DESIGN: PCR assays for three loss-of-function alleles were designed to exploit internal restriction sites within acidic alpha-glucosidase amplicons that are independent of allelic variants at the mutant sites. RESULTS: Genotyping 8529 clinically normal Brahmans between August 1996 and August 2001 revealed 16.4% were heterozygous for the more common of the two mutations (1057deltaTA…

Vaccination of cattle against Mycobacterium bovis.

Protection of cattle against bovine tuberculosis by vaccination could be an important control strategy in countries where there is persistence of Mycobacterium bovis infection in wildlife and in developing countries where it is not economical to implement a 'test and slaughter' control programme. Early field trials with Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) M. bovis vaccine in cattle produced disappointing results, with induction of tuberculin skin-test reactivity following vaccination and low levels of protection. However, recent studies using a low dose of BCG vaccine in cattle have produced more en…

Idiopathic eosinophilic enteritis in four cattle.

Four cattle had chronic diarrhea and had lost weight but were not anorectic or dehydrated. A diagnosis of eosinophillic enteritis was made on the basis of a combination of clinical and histopathologic findings and exclusion of other diseases. Eosinophilia and hypoalbuminemia were not detected in CBC analyses. Gross and histologic examination of the small intestine revealed edema, diffuse eosinophilic inflammation (> 20 eosinophils/HPF [400 x]), and regional lymphadenopathy. A causative agent was not identified in any of the cattle. Treatment consisting of a 1-month course of systemically admin…

Pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) toxicosis in cattle.

Four of approximately 15 dry cows introduced on a 10-acre fescue-clover-orchard grass-Dallis grass pasture in East Tennessee became recumben … ruling out other possible causes. Several factors probably contributed to this incident: since the cattle were newly introduced to the pasture, the cattle may have been attracted to the pigweed in the new pasture and became addicted to it; their rumen microflora had little time to acclimate to the pigweed; and dry weather produced poor forage quality th …

Blue-green algae toxicosis in cattle.

Twenty-four of 175 heifers died after ingesting water from a stock pond containing blue-green algae (genus Microcystis) in southern Colorado. Affected cattle were found dead or had signs of nervousness, and were recumbent, weak, anorectic, and hypersensitive to noise when first examined. All cattle died within 3 days after the onset of signs. At necropsy, the rumen contained blue-green algae, and the liver was larger than normal, friable, and dark red. The most important histologic lesion was hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis. Intraperitoneal administration of lyophilized cell material from…

[Infection-limited disease factors in cattle].

The following infectious diseases of cattle can be included in the group of the so-called infectious 'factors disease': certain respiratory diseases, in particular enzootic bronchopneumonia (EBP, 'shipping fever'), trichophytia, some parasitic skin diseases and internal parasitoses, certain types of calf enteritis, special forms of mastitis and of genital infections and possibly others. As is discussed in the paper EBP is a typical multifactorial infectious disease in cattle. The role of Pasteurella spp. in the pathogenesis of EBP is shown on the basis of recent investigations in young beef ca…

Oak (Quercus rubor)poisoning in cattle.

Two outbreaks of oak poisoning in cattle in the Republic of South Africa are described. In the first outbreak 22 out of 80 head of cattle were severely affected while 40 out of a herd of 135 cattle were affected in the second outbreak. Of these 40, only one survived after 9 months despite vigorous treatment. Only young cattle under 2 years were affected during both outbreaks in spite of an average herd age of approximately 6 years in the second group of cattle. Clinical signs included severe weakness with a swaying gait, diarrhoea and dehydration. Some were pot bellied while others were emacia…

Cestrum diurnum poisoning in Florida cattle.

Cestrum diurnum poisoning was described in a Florida bull. Clinical signs included chronic wasting and progressive lameness. Plasma calcium was elevated for long periods of time but decreased toward low normal values. There was pronounced C-cell hyperplasia. Osteopetrosis was very severe and reflected retarded osteocytic osteolysis and chondrolysis. Further negative effects on the osteocytes eventually lead to osteonecrosis. Soft tissue calcinosis involved tendons and ligaments, major arteries and veins but kidneys and lungs were spared. Whereas the osteopetrosis could be explained by hypercal

Vaccination of cattle against Q-fever.

Formalin-killed phase I C. burneti organisms containing the protective antigenic component were used for vaccination of heifers against Q fever. None of the vaccinated heifers contracted Q fever, whereas 8 out of 12 (66.6%) control, non-vaccinated heifers became infected when exposed to infection for 3 months in the breed of naturally infected dairy cows. In the vaccinated cattle C. burneti was detected immediately post partum neither in the placenta nor in the colostrum. No shedding of C. burneti in milk has been found so far during 3 years of post-vaccinal observation period. For detecting Q…
