Linitis plastica of the cecum.

Linitis plastica of the cecum is rare. The authors describe a case of this condition in a 16-year-old man. The commonest presenting symptom is a change in bowel habit. Histologically there are three recurring features--diffuse infiltration of the bowel wall by small darkly staining tumour cells, the presence of multiple "signet-ring" cells indicating mucin production and, third, an attempt at gland formation. The prognosis is poor; no patient has survived longer than 27 months.

The bleeding caecal angioma: a diagnostic problem.

Three cases are reported of bleeding angioma of the caecum. The wider use and improved technique of selective arteriography have led to an increase in frequency of diagnosis of this condition, and facilitate the management.

Adenocarcinoma of the cecum: natural history and clinical patterns of recurrence following radical surgery.

One hundred and forty-three patients with previously untreated primary adenocarcinomas of the cecum were analyzed. Fifty-three patients manifesting disseminated disease at diagnosis were analyzed to define mechanisms of disease spread. Ninety patients were analyzed following attempted curative resection to determine anatomical distribution of initial clinical recurrences. Twenty-eight patients recurred (31%), of whom 9 underwent a second laparotomy. Nineteen of the 28 patients who recurred (68%) demonstrated an initial pattern of relapse clinically confined to the abdomen, liver, and retroperi

Oxyuriasis-induced intestinal obstruction in a child--case report.

PURPOSE: The presentation of an unusual case of the tumor of ileum wall induced by pinworm infection in a 5-years-old child. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The record of a 4-years-old boy treated in the department of pediatric surgery was analyzed concerning the diagnostic difficulties. After 6 month from an episode of ileo-cecal intusussception successfully treated with a barium colon enema, the diagnosis of lymphoma was made and the resection of distant segment of small intestine was performed. RESULTS: No clinical and laboratory features of oxyuriasis could be stated before the onset of disease, d

Granular cell tumor of the cecum with extensive hyalinization and calcification: a case report.

A granular cell tumor (GCT) is a benign neoplasm of unclear histogenesis that is generally believed to be of nerve sheath origin. GCT is not common and most often affects the tongue, skin and soft tissue, although it may occur anywhere in the body. We experienced a case of GCT that arose in the cecum of a 55-year-old man. The GCT was removed by laparoscopic resection. In addition to the tumor, endoscopic examination revealed the presence of a 5-mm-polyp in the descending colon and multiple tiny polyps in the sigmoid colon and rectum. Histological examination demonstrated a cecal tumor 1.5 cm x

Routine histopathological examination of appendectomy specimens in children: is there any rationale?

OBJECTIVE: Primary carcinoma of the bowel is a rare malignancy in pediatric age group. The aim of the study was to assess the incidence of appendicular malignancies in children and the possibility of reducing the need for routine histopathological examination of appendix. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In last 15 years, all the cases of appendectomies in children were analyzed. Retrospective analysis of the data was done to document the clinical presentation, diagnosis, outcome and histopathology reports of the specimen. The case files and operation notes were studied thoroughly in cases where HPR wa

[A Case of Successful Additional Resection for Subcutaneous Local Recurrence of Cecal Cancer with Subcutaneous Penetration].

We report a rare case of subcutaneous local recurrence of cecal cancer with subcutaneous abscess formation, successfully managed by additional resection. An 86-year-old woman underwent ileocecal resection with partial peritoneal resection for cecal adenocarcinoma complicated by a subcutaneous abscess. Postoperative chemotherapy was administered, and the patient was followed up regularly. Five months later, a painful subcutaneous mass appeared in the right lower quadrant. Imaging studies, including CT and PET-CT, indicated subcutaneous local recurrence. Surgical excision was performed due to sy

Desmoid fibromatosis arising from caecum: an overview of the challenges in diagnosis and treatment.

Desmoid fibromatosis is a rare subtype of soft tissue neoplasms known for its locally aggressive behaviour and fibrotic consistency. While these tumours can arise in various anatomical sites, their occurrence within the colon is exceptionally rare and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present a case of a female patient in her 30s with no significant medical history who presented with vague gastrointestinal and urinary symptoms. Imaging studies revealed a sizeable abdominal mass, initially raising uncertainty regarding its origin. Subsequent exploratory laparotomy revealed a desmo

Endometriosis-induced appendiceal intussusception.

Appendiceal intussusception is a rare entity that is difficult to diagnosis before surgery both clinically and radiologically. We report here a case of a 55-year-old woman with a 6-month history of right lower abdominal pain caused by appendiceal intussusception. Laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. Endometriosis foci were identified in the appendix tip and became the leading point of the appendiceal intussusception. The appendix was removed laparoscopically, which is the optimal treatment for such patients.

[Ileocolic intussusception due to a large B cell lymphoma in a patient with AIDS].

Adult intussusception is rare. Here, we describe a case of an AIDS adult patient who developed an ileocolic intussusception secondary to a large B cell lymphoma of the cecum. Surgical findings included the ileon free of the tumor and invaginated within the cecum with infiltrating neoplasm. Surgical treatment included the resection of the right hemicolon because of the tumor, located in the cecum, causing intussusception. The English and Spanish literature is reviewed.

Intussusception of the appendix by mucinous cystadenoma. Report of a case with an unusual clinical presentation.

Appendiceal mucocele is a very rare clinical condition. Associated ascites and an ovarian mass could suggest synchronous ovarian cystadenocarcinoma with pseudomyxoma peritonei. We describe the case of a 36-year-old female with a mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix causing intussusception, diagnosed by CT but not by US scan, since the associated anomalous fixation of the caecum was misleading in defining the precise anatomical site. Although the CT findings were accurate, the synchronous presence of an ovarian cyst and ascites did not allow us to rule out preoperatively a concurrent cystadenoc

Spontaneous gas gangrene associated with occult carcinoma of the colon: a case report and review of literature.

Clostridium septicum infection is a rare cause of spontaneous nontraumatic gas gangrene. The resultant myonecrosis is acutely painful and rapidly fatal. The infection occurs in the absence of trauma and is usually associated with an underlying malignancy. A case of spontaneous gas gangrene of the upper limb caused by C. septicum infection associated by carcinoma of the colon is presented, with a review of the literature.

Gallium-67 scintigraphy in an adult intussusception caused by malignant lymphoma.

A rare case of adult intussusception caused by malignant lymphoma (ML) of the cecum was reported. In spite of the cecum lesion, strong 67Ga accumulation was located in the right epigastrium. This finding was useful in suggesting the presence of intussusception due to ML.

Carcinoma of the caecum in a scorbutic patient.

The clinical findings of scurvy have been known for well over 3,000 years. In 1753, Sir James Lynd demonstrated the efficiency of citrus fruit in the prevention of this condition. Scurvy still occurs from time to time in this country, notably in the elderly, particularly in bachelors who live alone and eat a poor diet. Scurvy has been associated with gastrointestinal malignancy, but, as far as we know, it has not been reported in association with carcinoma of the caecum. We report the case of an elderly female patient who presented with features of scurvy and was also found to have carcinoma o
