Self-sterilized composite membranes of cellulose acetate/polyethylene glycol for water desalination.

Cellulose acetate/Polyethylene glycol-600 composite membranes were fabricated by two step phase inversion procedure and modified by in-situ reduction of silver nitrate. FTIR spectra demonstrated the existence of functional groups for bonding of silver with oxygen at 370cm(-1), 535cm(-1). The XRD diffractogram indicates characteristic peaks at 2θ values of 38.10°, 44.30°, 64.40°, and 77.30° which confirm the successful incorporation of silver within matrix of composite membranes. The morphology of composite membranes with appearances of spongy voids was exemplified from the scanning electron mi…

Hyaluronic acid/carboxymethyl cellulose directly applied to transected nerve decreases axonal outgrowth.

Neuroma management is an unresolved problem. Biomaterials to limit unwanted axonal growth could be a tool to manage neuroma. Hyaluronic acid/carboxymethyl cellulose (HA/CMC) is an antiadhesive, biodegradable material that is nontoxic to nerve. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of this biomaterial to limit axonal growth. Rats received a sciatic nerve transection and repair with a short conduit (5 mm) containing HA/CMC, fibrin, or nothing (empty conduit). In another study, nerve was transected and either left undisturbed or wrapped with HA/CMC around the proximal and distal …

Bacterial cellulose membranes used as artificial substitutes for dural defection in rabbits.

To improve the efficacy and safety of dural repair in neurosurgical procedures, a new dural material derived from bacterial cellulose (BC) was evaluated in a rabbit model with dural defects. We prepared artificial dura mater using bacterial cellulose which was incubated and fermented from Acetobacter xylinum. The dural defects of the rabbit model were repaired with BC membranes. All surgeries were performed under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia, and all efforts were made to minimize suffering. All animals were humanely euthanized by intravenous injection of phenobarbitone, at each time point, …

Cellulose sulfate suppresses immunoglobulin E production by murine B lymphocytes in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin (Ig) E plays an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis and allergic asthma. We previously reported that a sulfate polysaccharide, fucoidan, suppressed IgE production by murine B cells in vitro. However, the mechanism by which fucoidan suppresses IgE production remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We incorporated sulfate groups into cellulose and studied their biological characteristics in vitro to explore the possibility of converting biologically neutral polysaccharides to active reagents with antiallergic functions. MATERIAL AND M…

[High level expression and purification of Cysticercosis cellulose annexin32 in Escherichia coli].

In previous work, the cDNA encoding Cysticercus cellulose annexin32 has been cloned. With PCR method, two different restriction Sites were added to each end of the cDNA respectively. Then, the cDNA was inserted into prokaryotic expression vector pJLA-503. After inducing, most foreign protein was expressed in soluble form, which was up to 35% of the total protein of the bacteria. Subsequently, the recombinant Annexin32 was purified with (NH4)2SO4 stepwise precipitation, DEAE-Sepharose FF and Sephacryl S-200 HR chromatography. The final pure protein can been shown as a single band in SDS-PAGE, a…

[Preparation, characterization and evaluation of cellulose tris (3,5-dimethylphencarbamate) chiral stationary phase].

With the deposition of cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (CDMPC) on aminopropylated silica gel (mean particle size, 5 microns; pore size, 13 nm; surface area, 110 m2/g) by using two different methods (evaporation and precipitation), two chiral stationary phases (CSP1 and CSP2) characterized by elemental analysis and scanning electron micrography were obtained. They were also evaluated by using seven racemic compounds with n-hexane/ethanol(95/5, V/V) and n-hexane/2-propanol (90/10, V/V) as mobile phases. The results showed that the chiral stationary phase CSP1 obtained by the evaporat…

Multiple compression and plasto-elastic behaviour of paracetamol and microcrystalline cellulose mixtures.

Radial tensile strength, friability, ER/PC (elastic recovery/plastic compression) ratio and energy ratio analyses were evaluated for various mixtures of paracetamol and microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel). A good correlation occurred between the energy ratio and the other variables. Linear relationships were found between log tensile strength and percentage energy ratio and also between radial tensile strength and stress relaxation energy. Capping occurred when the percentage energy ratio was greater than 15% and the ER/PC ratio greater than 1.5. To produce tablets with acceptable tensile stre…

Bacterial Cellulose Production, Characterization, and Its Use as a Membrane Filter for Microorganism.

The aim of this study was to investigate the usability of bacterial cellulose (BC) produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinus NRRL B-759 (Komagataeibacter xylinus) as a membrane filter and to determine the shortest incubation time for obtaining the BC membrane with an effective removal capacity. BC production of this bacterium was found to be dependent on incubation time (day), and the properties of the membranes produced on each day were then examined in detail. BC formed on the third day showed a suitable peak structure and ideal formation of the cellulose structure, as determined by FTIR and X-r…

Influence of Interfacial Interactions on the Formation of Zein-Ethyl Cellulose Composite Films.

In this study, submicrometer zein particle suspensions (ZPS) were prepared by antisolvent precipitation from aqueous ethanol (Eth, 90% w/w) or isopropanol (Iso, 90% w/w) solutions. The resulting ZPS were incorporated into an ethyl cellulose solution (EC, 4% w/w), followed by casting to obtain continuous composite films. The zein particle size distribution was evaluated by laser diffraction, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and atomic force microscopy analyses. The ZPS prepared from 90% aqueous ethanol had zein particles with a smaller average particle size (Dv50 = 0.56 μm) compared to those…

Combining Microbial Cellulose with FeSO4 and FeCl2 by Ex Situ and In Situ Methods.

Environmentally sustainable methods for producing flexible electronics, such as paper-based energy harvesters in nanogenerators, are a major objective in materials science. In this frame, the present study investigated two different Komagataeibacter sp. strains (K2G30 and K2G44), never tested as biocatalysts for the production of bacterial cellulose (BC) functionalized with iron particles to provide potential electrical conductivity. Two functionalization strategies (ex situ and in situ) were evaluated using two iron compounds FeCl2 and FeSO4, individually and in combination (up to 0.1% w/v), …

Hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers by gallic acid and the application in pressure sensing.

Via rational molecular structure design and using gallic acid (GA) for hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers (CNF), the "polymer dipole" CNF-GA with hydrophilic main chains and hydrophobic side chains was prepared, which improved the poor piezoelectric properties of CNF used for preparing pressure sensors. Due to the appearance of the side chains, the elongation at break of the CNF-GA-2, compared with CNF, was enhanced by 186 %, and the excellent tensile strength, puncture load, and tearing strength were displayed. Moreover, the significant glass transition temperature (Tg) near the…

Flow and assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC): A bottom-up perspective - A review.

Cellulosic sources, such as lignocellulose-rich biomass, can be mechanically or acid degraded to produce inclusions called cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). They have several uses in the sectors of biomedicine, photonics, and material engineering because of their biodegradability, renewability, sustainability, and mechanical qualities. The processing and design of CNC-based products are inextricably linked to the rheological behaviour of CNC suspension or in combination with other chemicals, such as surfactants or polymers; in this context, rheology offers a significant link between microstructur…

Targeting polysaccharides such as chitosan, cellulose, alginate and starch for designing hemostatic dressings.

Unfortunately hemorrhage and its complications (e.g. anemia, organ failure, and hypothermia) induced by traumatic injury, surgery, and disorders of bleeding play an all too familiar role in human morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is difficult to overstate the importance of better understanding the role of polysaccharides in advanced hemostatic dressings (HDs). This review includes consideration of polysaccharide hemostatic dressing mechanism of action, relative efficacy, cost and safety. Polysaccharide-based HDs are widely used in management not only of external and internal bleeding but

On the function of biosynthesized cellulose as barrier against bacterial colonization of VAD drivelines.

Bacterial colonization of drivelines represents a major adverse event in the implantation of left ventricular assist devices (L-VADs) for the treatment of congestive heart failure. From the external driveline interface and through the skin breach, pathogens can ascend to the pump pocket, endangering the device function and the patient's life. Surface Micro-Engineered Biosynthesized cellulose (BC) is an implantable biomaterial, which minimizes fibrotic tissue deposition and promotes healthy tissue regeneration. The topographic arrangement of cellulose fibers and the typical material porosity su…

Efficient adsorption of diclofenac sodium in water by a novel functionalized cellulose aerogel.

In this work, a novel cellulose aerogel (CNC-PVAm/rGO) was fabricated using cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC) modified with polyvinylamine (PVAm) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The resultant CNC-PVAm/rGO was then applied for the adsorption of diclofenac sodium (DCF), a typical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Characterization using ultra-high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area revealed that the obtained CNC-PVAm/rGO displayed an ev…

Evaluation of cellulose pads as a method to detect cytomegalovirus DNA in neonatal urine.

Background Several approaches exist to screen neonates for congenital cytomegalovirus infection. We here describe a new method using cellulose pads for urine collection and its evaluation in an experimental and a clinical setting. Methods We systematically tested the effect of storage duration of the pads after exposure to cytomegalovirus-positive urine, meconium contamination and specimen handling on the cytomegalovirus load and the detection rate. Further, the method was tested in clinical practice in a cohort of 500 neonates. Results Following exposure of urine pads with cytomegalovirus-pos…
