Prevalence of falls in elderly people: a population based study.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of falls is related to a complex interaction of risk factors, aggravated by aging. This research aimed to investigate the occurrence of falls in the elderly, as well as to identify the risk factors for this event. METHODS: A cross-sectional, population-based study conducted in a municipality in the extreme south of Brasil. Probabilistic sampling was used, the sample unit being the census tracts. Data were collected through home interviews. The research was approved by the research ethics committee. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This study was performed using a sample o…

Neighborhoods, Schools and Obesity: The Potential for Place-Based Approaches to Reduce Childhood Obesity.

A common policy approach to reducing childhood obesity aims to shape the environment in which children spend most of their time: neighborhoods and schools. This paper uses richly detailed data on the body mass index (BMI) of all New York City public school students in grades K-8 to assess the potential for place-based approaches to reduce child obesity. We document variation in the prevalence of obesity across NYC public schools and census tracts, and then estimate the extent to which this variation can be explained by differences in individual-level predictors (such as race and household inco…

A controlled trial of disease surveillance strategies.

Active surveillance techniques using routine telephone contacts with providers improved the reporting of measles, rubella, salmonellosis, an … ocal resources and priorities. Although reporting rates were higher for diseases among persons from census tracts of low socioeconomic status, physicians providing care to persons living in low-income areas responded no differently to active reporting than did those providing care to patients from middle- and high-income areas.

Assessing environmental injustice in Kansas City by linking paediatric asthma to local sources of pollution: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: A grassroots environmental-justice organisation in Kansas City has been examining the disproportionate exposure to air pollution experienced by residents living fenceline to the largest classification railyard in the USA. Prior analyses showed limited increased risk for asthma exacerbation for patients with asthma living closer to toxic release inventory (TRI) facilities and railyards. In this study, we assessed geographical asthma and environmental disparities, to further explore community-level disparities. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study of population-level asthma rates,

Spatial associations of Hansen's disease and schistosomiasis in endemic regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Brazil has the second highest case count of Hansen's disease (leprosy, HD), but factors contributing to transmission in highly e … on for HD and schistosomiasis cases were identified. A multivariate non-spatial analysis found that census tracts with MB disease were more likely to have schistosomiasis when adjusted for population density, household density, and household income (aOR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.0, 2.7). This remained significant when accounting for spatial correlation (aOR = 1.1, 95% C …

Disparities in Zika Virus Testing and Incidence Among Women of Reproductive Age-New York City, 2016.

CONTEXT: The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) performs surveillance for reportable diseases, including Zika virus (ZIKV) infection and disease, to inform public health responses. Incidence rates of other mosquito-borne diseases related to international travel are associated with census tract poverty level in NYC, suggesting that high poverty areas might be at higher risk for ZIKV infections. OBJECTIVES: We assessed ZIKV testing rates and incidence of travel-associated infection among reproductive age women in NYC to identify areas with high incidence and low t…

Survival analysis was used to test months from childbirth to child or maternal death as a function of lifetime rDUI status. Race and neighborhood social determinants of premature cancer mortality in California adults, 2015-2021.

PURPOSE: To investigate social determinants of cancer mortality and effect modification by race/ethnicity, age, sex, and Covid-19 pandemic period in Californian adults. METHODS: The Healthy Places Index (HPI) measures neighborhood socioeconomic and environmental conditions, and access to healthcare. We aggregated 224,997 cancer deaths to 2010 census tracts from death certificates and populations from U.S. census, 2015-2021. In this cross-sectional study, we age-adjusted death rates of HPI deciles and examined HPI dose-response with segmental regression. RESULTS: From 2015 to 2019, all-cancer…

Neighborhood alcohol outlet density and rates of child abuse and neglect: moderating effects of access to substance abuse services.

This study investigates the relationship between concentrations of on- and off-premises alcohol outlets and rates of child abuse and neglect. Additionally, the study seeks to locate protective features of a neighborhood's built environment by investigating the potentially moderating role that access to substance abuse treatment and prevention services plays in the relationship between alcohol outlet density and child maltreatment. Using a cross-sectional design, this ecological study utilized data from 163 census tracts in Bergen County, New Jersey, on reports of child abuse and neglect, alcoh…

Gated Communities and House Prices: Suburban Change in Southern California, 1980-2008.

Housing prices being one factor thought to contribute to segregation patterns, this article aims at differentiating gated communities from non-gated communities in terms of change in property values. To what extent do gated communities contribute to price filtering of residents, and do patterns of price differentiation favor gated communities in the long run? The article provides an analysis of the territorial nature of gated communities and how the private urban-governance realm theoretically sustains the hypothesis that property values within gated communities are better protected. In order

Epidemiologic aspects of a St. Louis encephalitis outbreak in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1980.

From July 10 through August 4, 1980, five cases of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in and near Fort Walton Beach on the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida. These were the first cases of SLE ever reported from the Florida panhandle. To determine the extent of SLE infection in the community, sera (n = 968) were collected from patients at the local hospital and county public health unit and tested for SLE virus antibody. The SLE attack rate was highest in a centrally located impoverished census tract. There was a trend toward decreasing seroprevalence with distance from the central area of the…

Neighbourhood alcohol availability and gonorrhea rates: impact of social capital.

Social capital and income inequality have been proposed as important mediators of the relation between the material environment and health outcomes. We determined whether indicators of social capital are (i) associated with neighbourhood gonorrhea rates, and (ii) mediate the relation between alcohol outlet density and gonorrhea rate. Longitudinal analyses of age- and sex-adjusted gonorrhea cases reported from 1990 to 1996 in the 445 census tracts affected by the 1992 civil unrest in Los Angeles, California was conducted. The role of alcohol outlets was assessed both as tracts with surrendered …
