Ferrimagnetic glass-ceramics containing magnetite crystals were developed for hyperthermia applications of solid neoplastic tissue. The present work is focused on in vitro evaluation of the biocompatibility of these materials, before and after soaking in a simulated body fluid (SBF). X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and pH measurements were employed in glass-ceramic characterisation. The free-radical mediated reactivity of the glass-ceramic was evaluated by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spin trapping.

PURPOSE: The results of ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearing surfaces in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were well known. However, it was not known in revision THA. The purpose of this study is to report the results of revision THA with ceramic articulation.

One hundred twelve consecutive primary total hip replacements were performed for osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis by a single surgeon using the Mittelmeier ceramic prosthesis without cement between January 1983 and July 1984. Ninety-three of these hips were followed prospectively to a minimum of 60 months and a median of 108 months. Five (5.4%) hips have been revised for loosening. We report 60 benign bone tumours treated by resection and curettage followed by the implantation of calcium hydroxyapatite ceramic (CHA). After follow-up of six to 60 months (average 36), no patient had local recurrence of the tumour or any adverse effects from the implants. In almost all cases radiography showed that the CHA was well-incorporated into the host bone, with new bone formation in and around the CHA. This study evaluated the effects of calcium phosphate ceramics, hydroxylapatite, and tricalcium phosphate implants on tooth eruption and development. The authors placed a ceramic keratoprosthesis through the eyelids of 11 consecutive patients: six with alkali injury, four with cicatricial pemphigoid, and one with Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
