Association of Daily Activities With Maternal-Child Bonding, Parenting Self-Efficacy, Social Support, and Parenting Behaviors Among Survivors Living in an Intimate Partner Violence Shelter: A Daily Diary Study.

Following a traumatic event such as intimate partner violence (IPV), survivors often experience stress related to the violence. These high levels of stress related to IPV can be associated with the daily activities of survivors and their relationships with their children, such as maternal-child bonding. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between daily activities, daily stress levels, parenting self-efficacy and behaviors, and maternal-child bonding among survivors living in an IPV shelter using an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology. Exposure to domestic violence as abuse and neglect: Constructions of child maltreatment in daily practice.

Research finds that exposure to domestic violence can adversely affect the emotional, behavioral, and physical health of children. These effects have led some child advocates and policymakers in the United States to conclude that child exposure to domestic violence (CEDV) is a type of child maltreatment warranting state intervention. However, few states have defined CEDV as a type of maltreatment in statute and little is known about how child welfare agencies respond to allegations of CEDV in the absence of other safety threats. This study considers that CEDV itself might prompt an initial chi

A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of the Psychometric Properties of the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI).

The Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI) is a measure widely used to assess caregivers' likelihood of physically abusing their child. Its psychometric properties require further assessment, specifically among highest-risk caregivers known to child protective services. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the criterion validity, construct validity, and responsiveness of the CAPI Abuse scale among child-welfare system involved caregivers of children aged 0-12. We searched PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science for articles published in English between 1986 and January 2023 that reported data …

Balancing the law with children's rights to participation and decision-making: Practice guidelines for mandatory reporting processes in child sexual abuse.

In India, legal response to a sexual offence, namely, punishment of the perpetrator, relies nearly entirely on mandatory reporting provisions in child sexual abuse law.Mandatory reporting forms an important first step in the medico-legal processes of CSAwork, because it leads onto other legal interventions in CSA cases. However, social, stigma, perceived harassment, rampant gender stereotypes, the unwillingness of, family, disbelief of the victim, and threats by the perpetrator are a few of the many, barriers to mandatory reporting in the Indian context. One particularly insufficiently, address

The handicapped child and child abuse.

For a group of children with handicaps, growth and development are also affected by abuse or neglect. Our understanding of the problems of the abused, handicapped child emerges from experience with 37 children with cerebral palsy who have been maltreated, coupled with a review of the literature in related areas. We identify the following four problems as crucial to the study of abuse and neglect to the child with handicaps: (1) abuse that causes handicaps, (2) abuse that occurs to the handicapped child, (3) compromises in care that can occur when the handicapped child becomes involved with the

Dilemmas for international mobilization around child abuse and neglect.

The goal of this commentary is to articulate some issues and dilemmas raised by various efforts to mobilize international action around child abuse and neglect (CAN). We will start by proposing a typology of international mobilization strategies, noting that initiatives to promote CAN programming in new settings have tended to emphasize one of three vectors: governments, professionals, or international NGOs. There are pros and cons to each emphasis, which we discuss. We also review the debates around some of the following dilemmas: Should low-income countries be a top priority for CAN mobiliza

The nature and extent of child protection involvement among heroin-using mothers in treatment: high rates of reports, removals at birth and children in care.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: A substantial proportion of women in treatment for substance use problems are mothers of dependent children, but only a small number of studies have explored the nature and extent of their child protection involvement with substance-using mothers themselves. DESIGN AND METHODS: A large sample of mothers on the opioid treatment program (OTP) in Sydney, Australia, were interviewed. This paper describes their characteristics, the extent and nature of their involvement with the child protection system, the parenting-related interventions provided and their views of their ow

The child protection and juvenile justice nexus in Australia: A longitudinal examination of the relationship between maltreatment and offending.

There is convincing evidence that many young people who are in the justice system have had contact with child protection services and that victims of childhood maltreatment are at increased risk of subsequent youth justice involvement. In Australia, however, there have been few longitudinal studies that have examined these associations and relatively less is known in this area. This study examines the overlap between the child protection and youth justice involvement in South Australia, and determines how substantiated maltreatment and variations in these experiences (e.g., the type, timing an

[Parental support provided by the child protection educator].

Child protection provides for the removal of a child from his or her family when the child's basic needs are not being met. Out-of-home placement in a nursery is intended for children under the age of 3 who are exposed to situations of danger, neglect, or abuse. This separation can lead to psychological, relational, and physical repercussions requiring supportive and structured multidisciplinary care. However, the placement is not intended to exclude the parents but rather to maintain and support the family bond in accordance with the terms set by the judge. The caregiver plays a central role

Fifteen-minute consultation: An approach to the child protection medical assessment-a focus on non-technical skills.

Child protection medical assessments (CPMAs) are carried out to seek evidence of abuse or neglect and for this reason many paediatricians find them daunting. In this article we explore how CPMAs differ from routine clinical assessments of children. We describe how preparation can help ensure the assessment goes smoothly and provide tips for communication with the child and carer. We also highlight the importance of self-care for clinicians working in this emotive area of paediatrics. We conclude by sharing some pitfalls and how practitioners can overcome them.

The impact of case factors on the initial screening decision in child welfare investigations in Norway.

BACKGROUND: When a child welfare service agency receives a report of concern, there is an initial screening to decide whether an investigation needs to be initiated. In addition to the decision maker, case factors, external factors, and organizational factors have an impact on decision making in Child Welfare Services (CWS). Few recent studies have considered the impact of case factors on the initial screening. OBJECTIVE: This study examined case factors that have an impact on the decision to investigate in the Norwegian CWS. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants included randomly drawn sam

Child maltreatment investigations: Comparing children, families, and reasons for referral in three European countries.

BACKGROUND: Almost all countries have developed measures to ensure that children do not suffer from violence in their families. However, the legal framework, definitions of maltreatment, and institutional structures differ. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: The article examines the differences between cases referred to local child and youth welfare authorities due to concerns about abuse or neglect in Germany, England and the Netherlands, comparing the characteristics of the child, the famil
