Is a fact retrieval deficit the main characteristic of children with mathematical learning disabilities?

Although a fact retrieval deficit is widely considered to be the hallmark of children with mathematical learning disabilities (MLD), recent studies suggest that even adults use procedural strategies to solve small additions, except for ties that are unanimously considered to be solved by retrieval. Our study, based on how MLD children process ties and non-ties compared to typically developing (TD) children, sheds new light on their retrieval and procedural difficulties. Our results show that, by the end of the second grade, MLD children do not differ in their ability to solve the tie problems

Estimated Prevalence of Children With Diagnosed Developmental Disabilities in the United States, 2014-2016.

Developmental disabilities are a set of heterogeneous disorders characterized by difficulties in one or more domains, including but not limited to, learning, behavior, and self-care. This report provides the latest prevalence estimates for diagnosed autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and other developmental delay among children aged 3–17 years from the 2014–2016 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Estimates are also presented for any developmental disability, defined as having had one or more of these three diagnoses. Prevalence estimates are based on parent or guardian re

Impact of enjoyment on physical activity and health among children with disabilities in schools.

BACKGROUND: Enjoyment in school-based physical activity (PA) programs, such as recess or physical education may be important for promoting children's health, but there is a lack of evidence explaining how enjoyment affects health in children with disabilities. HYPOTHESES: Enjoyment in school-based PA programs will positively influence general health through participating in more daily PA, and this relationship will vary between younger and older children with disabilities. METHODS: We conducted secondary analysis of data from the 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey. The sample included 241 ch

Writing Process Products in Intermediate-Grade Children With and Without Language-Based Learning Disabilities.

PURPOSE: Difficulties with written expression are an important consideration in the assessment and treatment of school-age children. This study evaluated how intermediate-grade children with and without written language difficulties fared on a writing task housed within the Hayes and Berninger (2014) writing process framework. METHOD: Sixty-four children completed a writing task whereby they planned, wrote, and revised a narrative story across 3 days. Children had extended time to produce an outline, first draft, and final copy of their story. Language transcription approaches were used to ob

Reducing distress in mothers of children with autism and other disabilities: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Compared with other parents, mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder or other neurodevelopmental disabilities experience more stress, illness, and psychiatric problems. Although the cumulative stress and disease burden of these mothers is exceptionally high, and associated with poorer outcomes in children, policies and practices primarily serve the identified child with disabilities. METHODS: A total of 243 mothers of children with disabilities were consented and randomized into either Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (mindfulness practice) or Positive Adult Developmen

A systematic review of self-management interventions for children and youth with physical disabilities.

PURPOSE: Evidence shows that effective self-management behaviors have the potential to improve health outcomes, quality of life, self-efficacy and reduce morbidity, emergency visits and costs of care. A better understanding of self-management interventions (i.e. programs that help with managing symptoms, treatment, physical and psychological consequences) is needed to achieve a positive impact on health because most children with a disability now live well into adulthood. METHOD: A systematic review of self-management interventions for school age youth with physical disabilities was undertake

A new approach for the quantitative evaluation of drawings in children with learning disabilities.

A new method for a quantitative and objective description of drawing and for the quantification of drawing ability in children with learning disabilities (LD) is hereby presented. Twenty-four normally developing children (N) (age 10.6 ± 0.5) and 18 children with learning disabilities (LD) (age 10.3 ± 2.4) took part to the study. The drawing tasks were chosen among those already used in clinical daily experience (Denver Developmental Screening Test). Some parameters were defined in order to quantitatively describe the features of the children's drawings, introducing new objective measurements b

Social perception in children with intellectual disabilities: the interpretation of benign and hostile intentions.

A key aspect of social perception is the interpretation of others' intentions. Children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have difficulty interpreting benign intentions when a negative event occurs. From a cognitive processing perspective, interpreting benign intentions can be challenging because it requires integration of conflicting information, as the social cues accompanying the negative event convey non-hostile intentions. The present study examined how children with ID process conflicting social information in a more diverse set of situational circumstances than was investigated previ

Topography of syllable change-detection electrophysiological indices in children and adults with reading disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a frequent language-based learning disorder. The predominant etiological view postulates that reading problems originate from a phonological impairment. METHOD: We studied mismatch negativity (MMN) and Late Discriminative Negativity (LDN) to syllables change in both children (n=12; 8-12 years) and young adults (n=15; 14-23 years) with DD compared with controls. RESULTS/DISCUSSION: The present study confirmed abnormal automatic discrimination of syllable changes in both children and adults with developmental dyslexia. MMN topographic, amplitude and

Risperidone: new indication. Behavioural disorders in children with autism or mental disabilities: no progress.

(1) Sedative drugs are one option when autistic or mentally disabled children have behavioural disorders that place them (or other people) in physical danger. Among the classic neuroleptics, haloperidol is the drug with the best-documented efficacy and safety. Placebo-controlled trials have also shown lithium to be effective for this use. (2) Clinical evaluation of risperidone in children with mental disabilities includes 3 placebo-controlled double-blind trials, 2 of which involved 118 and 110 children aged from 5 to 12 years who were treated for 6 weeks. All 3 trials showed a partial behavio

Nonverbal communication tool for children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities using biochemical measurement.

Children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) find it almost impossible to communicate whether they are feeling comfortable or uncomfortable. Most of the children with SMID rely on medical care involving disposable-type life support devices such as tracheostomy tubes or gastric tubes. It is believed that the insertion and removal of these medical devices could cause extreme physical pain under certain circumstances. The authors have previously reported a hand-held type salivary amylase (AMY) activity monitor that can be used to evaluate the sympathetic nervous system. This re

A study of the dental treatment needs of children with disabilities in Melbourne, Australia.

A selected population of children with disabilities in Melbourne, Australia, was studied with reference to their oral disease and treatment needs. A total of 300 children (aged 9-13 years), 150 attending special developmental schools (SDS) and 150 attending special schools (SS), received an oral examination and the parent/guardian completed a questionnaire. Six levels of function were defined, based on the child's independence for five self-care activities (brushing teeth, feeding self, dressing self, walking and performing toilet). The caries experience of children in the SS was lower than in
