Morphology features and microanatomy of the tongue papillae of the Eonycteris spelaea: Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Eonycteris spelaea (E. spelaea) is a sizable nectar-feeding bat that falls within the taxonomic classification of order Chiroptera and family Pteropododae. The form and structure of the tongue play a crucial role for bats in the intake and digestion of food in their mouth. Each papilla's morphology, dimensions, spatial arrangement, and physiological role exhibit variations among different animal species, contingent upon their respective lifestyles. AIM: This research attempts to examine the morphology and microstructure of the E. spelaea tongue papillae, collected from Timor Islan…

Differential susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 in animals: Evidence of ACE2 host receptor distribution in companion animals, livestock and wildlife by immunohistochemical characterisation.

Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a host cell membrane protein (receptor) that mediates the binding of coronavirus, most notably SAR … mmunohistochemistry (IHC) on histological sections derived from carnivores, ungulates, primates and chiroptera. Comparison of mink (Neovison vison) and ferret (Mustela putorius furo) respiratory tracts showed substantial differences, demonstrating that ACE2 is present in the lower respiratory tract of mink but not ferrets. The presence of ACE2 in the respira …

Ecology and Host Identity Outweigh Evolutionary History in Shaping the Bat Microbiome.

Recent studies of mammalian microbiomes have identified strong phylogenetic effects on bacterial community composition. Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) are among the most speciose mammals on the planet and the only mammal capable of true flight. We examined 1,236 16S rRNA amplicon libraries of the gut, oral, and skin microbiota from 497 Afrotropical bats (representing 9 families, 20 genera, and 31 species) to assess the extent to which host ecology and phylogeny predict microbial community similarity in bats. In contrast to recent studies of host-microbe associations in other mammals, we found no …

Non-human primates as a reservoir for rabies virus in Brazil.

Rabies virus (RABV) does not persist in the environment as it is a very fragile agent. The primary hosts are mammalian species in the orders Carnivora and Chiroptera. Since the late 1980s, RABV has been isolated from non-human primates, Callithrix jacchus (the white-tufted marmoset), in four coastal states (Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Pernambuco) in north-eastern Brazil, where this species is indigenous. The original habitat of C. jacchus consisted of two Brazilian biomes, the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga. However, these marmosets have since adapted to other ecosystems as a resul…

Extraordinary diversity of antiviral immune-related gene families across 38 bat species.

BACKGROUND: Despite harboring diverse pathogenic viruses, bats rarely exhibit clinical symptoms of the diseases. Previous research has reported evolutionary characteristics in key antiviral gene families in bats, such as natural killer cell receptors, MHC class I genes, and type I interferons, suggesting that bats may possess an immune tolerance that allows them to host viruses asymptomatically. However, this hypothesis is based on limited datasets and requires more comprehensive examinations. RESULTS: We assembled a chromosome-level reference genome of the Chinese horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus

Changing landscapes, shifting reservoirs: land-use change andLeptospira ecology in Madagascar.

Land-use change is widely recognized as a driver of zoonotic disease emergence, yet its effects are often context-dependent. In an article published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, J. A. Rajaonarivelo, K. M. Kauffman, T. M. Randriamoria, J. P. Herrera, et al. (92:e02061-25, 2026, https://doi.org/10.1128/aem.02061-25) show that shifts in small mammal communities across a disturbance gradient in Madagascar are associated with changes in Leptospira prevalence and lineage distribution. Introduced rodents contributed disproportionately to infections, whereas bats exhibited distinct patte

Detection and Phylogenetic Analysis of Emerging Human-Associated Gemykibivirus-2 in Molossus molossus Bat From Brazil.

We detected an emerging human-associated gemykibivirus-2 (HuGkV-2) in rectal swab sample from Molossus molossus bat from Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis further revealed well-supported relationships between our sequence and those associated with human infections. This study underscores the necessity of ongoing monitoring of HuGkV-2 to elucidate potential spillback events, its role in human infections, and its public health implications.

Establishment of a cell line from the hematophagous Bat Desmodus rotundus susceptible to Lyssavirus rabies.

Desmodus rotundus bats are the main reservoir for Lyssavirus rabies (RABV) in the Americas, however, knowledge of virus-host interactions in this species is very limited due to challenges associated with establishing in vivo experimental infections. In this context, cell culture becomes a valuable tool for expanding knowledge on the dynamics of RABV infection in its natural host in the Americas. This study aimed to develop and characterize a cell line from D. rotundus bat and to evaluate its susceptibility to RABV. Primary cultures of D. rotundus fetal kidney cells were immortalized using the

Adapting to stress: The effects of hibernation and hibernacula temperature on the hepatic transcriptome of Rhinolophus pusillus.

Hibernation, a survival strategy in mammals for extreme climates, induces physiological phenomena such as ischemia-reperfusion and metabolic shifts that hold great potential for advancements in modern medicine. Despite this, the molecular mechanisms underpinning hibernation remain largely unclear. This study used RNA-seq and Iso-seq techniques to investigate the changes in liver transcriptome expression of Rhinolophus pusillus during hibernation and active periods, as well as under different microhabitat temperatures. We identified 11 457 differentially expressed genes during hibernation and a

USE OF VISCOELASTIC COAGULATION TESTING IN MEGACHIROPTERA (PTEROPUS HYPOMELANUS AND PTEROPUS VAMPYRUS) REVEALS HIGH VARIABILITY IN CLOT KINETICS.

Megachiroptera is a mammalian suborder that includes old world fruit bats. Common clinical problems among captive Megachiroptera, such as liver disease (e.g., iron storage disease), kidney disease (e.g., protein-losing nephropathy), and heart disease (e.g., dilated cardiomyopathy), carry elevated risk for hemostatic derangements. The assessment of viscoelastic coagulation assays, however, has not yet been reported in bats. The main objective of the study was to describe viscoelastography data using the Viscoelastic Coagulation Monitor (VCM) Vet in captive large flying foxes (Pteropus vampyrus)…

Apparent absence of Trypanosoma cruzi in Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) from Texas, USA.

The Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is one of the most abundant mammals in North America. Mexican free-tailed bats have a wide geographic range stretching from northern South America to the western United States. Bats are theorized to be the original hosts for Trypanosoma cruzi -the causative agent of Chagas disease- and can serve as a source of infection to triatomine insect vectors that feed upon them. Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease across the Americas where triatomines are present, including the southern United States, where Texas reports this highest number

Tiger beetles produce anti-bat ultrasound and are probable Batesian moth mimics.

Echolocating bats and their eared insect prey are in an acoustic evolutionary war. Moths produce anti-bat sounds that startle bat predators, signal noxiousness, mimic unpalatable models and jam bat sonar. Tiger beetles (Cicindelidae) also purportedly produce ultrasound in response to bat attacks. Here we tested 19 tiger beetle species from seven genera and showed that they produce anti-bat signals to playback of authentic bat echolocation. The dominant frequency of beetle sounds substantially overlaps the sonar calls of sympatric bats. As tiger beetles are known to produce defensive chemicals

Integrative single-cell characterization of a frugivorous and an insectivorous bat kidney and pancreas.

Frugivory evolved multiple times in mammals, including bats. However, the cellular and molecular components driving it remain largely unknown. Here, we use integrative single-cell sequencing (scRNA-seq and scATAC-seq) on insectivorous (Eptesicus fuscus; big brown bat) and frugivorous (Artibeus jamaicensis; Jamaican fruit bat) bat kidneys and pancreases and identify key cell population, gene expression and regulatory differences associated with the Jamaican fruit bat that also relate to human disease, particularly diabetes. We find a decrease in loop of Henle and an increase in collecting duct

DNA Damage in Bat Blood Leukocytes Using a Chromatin Dispersion Test (CDT): Biomarker of Environmental Genotoxicity.

Environmental pollutants produce adverse effects on organisms and ecosystems. Biomonitoring and biomarkers offer a reasonable approach to make these assessments. Induced genetic changes can be using as a biomarker in organisms that react to a given compound in the ecosystem. Monitoring environmental genotoxicity necessitates the choice of model animals known as "sentinels or biological monitors" and the suitability of validated tests for DNA damage evaluation. We aimed to estimate the DNA damage produced by thermal stress in the leukocytes of the Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis)

First molecular detection of adenoviruses in bats from an urban Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Bats comprise one of the most diverse and abundant groups of mammals in the world and host a significant viral diversity with zoonotic potential. Bat adenoviruses (bat AdVs), members of the family Adenoviridae, have been detected in several bat species, suggesting that bats are natural reservoirs. Here, faeces and rectal/anal-swabs were collected from 321 bats of an urban Atlantic Forest remnant from Rio de Janeiro, during 2019-2022, and screened for bat AdV nucleic acid with PCR. The positivity of bat AdVs was 3.7 % (12/321). Twelve individuals of four bat species were infected: Artibeus litu

Spatial-temporal risk factors in the occurrence of rabies in Mexico.

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that affects livestock worldwide. The distribution of rabies is highly correlated with the distribution of the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus, the main vector of the disease. In this study, climatic, topographic, livestock population, vampire distribution and urban and rural zones were used to estimate the risk for presentation of cases of rabies in Mexico by co- Kriging interpolation. The highest risk for the presentation of cases is in the endemic areas of the disease, i.e. the States of Yucatán, Chiapas, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, San Luis Potosí,

Detection of rabies virus in Callithrix penicillata (Geoffroy, 1812) in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

This report describes the occurrence of the rabies virus in two species of wild animals in the urban area of Montes Claros (MOC), Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in May 2023. The virus has been detected in frugivorous chiropterans (Artibeus sp) and marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). This is the first notified case of the rabies virus in the species C. penicillata in the urban area of MOC. Our findings show that the rabies virus is circulating in the urban area of MOC; therefore, permanent preventive measures must be adopted to avoid infection of other animals and humans.

Acoustic camouflage increases with body size and changes with bat echolocation frequency range in a community of nocturnally active Lepidoptera.

Body size is an important trait in predator-prey dynamics as it is often linked to detection, as well as the success of capture or escape. Larger prey, for example, often runs higher risk of detection by their predators, which imposes stronger selection on their anti-predator traits compared to smaller prey. Nocturnal Lepidoptera (moths) vary strongly in body size, which has consequences for their predation risk, as bigger moths return stronger echoes for echolocating bats. To compensate for increased predation risk, larger moths are therefore expected to have improved anti-predator defences.
